yup
lame-ass production that was a decade out of date and limp tunes like Silly Game. It was never gonna be the commercial comeback that it was supposed to be. The 'High' project stood more of a chance commercially than Rave ever did IMO. (Also, Pretty Man is one of the best things on the album but why oh why did he have it as a hidden track?)

It's not my favorite album, but it does have some great tracks on there like Strange But True, Sun Moon & Stars, I Love U But... & Prettyman, but there is no consistency in style or quality. IMO, he would have been better either doing a) a complete collaboration album (So Far, So Pleased), b) the so called "High" album with tracks in the NPS style (Hot Wit U, Strange But True) or c) a Crystal Ball trype album with unreleased tracks (Rave Un2).
It still beats most other album out there ! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

it's not a matter of thinking, it's a matter of fact in commercial terms of course, otherwise everyone thinks what they want. For me it's an OK album - but definitely far away in artistic terms from what Prince can do ______________

:I: like it, so :I: don't consider it a flop. :I: actually like the accompaniment of the Remix album as well.

IMHO, Rave was the (hopefully ?) LAST desperate attempt to have a big scale commercial comeback.
1 that he won't be able to achieve because too much has changed in all those years. All the years of talking about "music should be free" and creative freedom, Prince was trying to have a BIG hit album again: - Gold Experience - Emancipation - Rave All very ambitious, all very much hyped, all very desperate, most very overproduced. I don't say that these albums are bad in total. I even consider Eman one of his best ones, but all albums were not fully satisfying to me. And now, as he seems to have given up his commercial attempts, there is TRC and a great tour and all I can say is: Yes, that's the music Prince should do, that's the way to make grown up music as a grown up musician in his 40ies. So if you ask me: "Was Rave a flop" all I can reply is thinking in terms like "hit & flop" is the problem.

What's to discuss.
It was a commercial disaster, the music was trite for 85% of it, and I'm glad the period is over - hopefully for good. Crap like "Hot Wit' U" was just embarrassing. --------------------

No. do love that album. The song "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic", then when did buy it on 1999, was very true for me... but a bit zynic. I just was becoming and became homeless and with my last money, did buy ne a ticket to New York, with the idea to go to Paisley Park. And I tell you: did rave in this big city full of lovers and of good times! I do stil rave!

That said, I was so fucking excited when I heard that Ani DiFranco was on "ILYBIDTYA" - and so bloody disappointed when she didn't sing. An excellent song by the two of them is "Providence." Listen to it! Beautiful. Prince's backup vocals are delicious. The Normal Whores Club

It left something to be desired. It was a heartbreak period in his life and he wanted Rave to be a hit so much...it didn't deliver! The guest appearances were filler (to me, to try and sell it). There are moments, but, indeed, it was the end of an era upon which I hope we never see again.

Awful album
Surely no sane fan argues that fact -----------------------------------------

the album is so fucking shallow, even prince fanatics kind of push it to the side.

I haven't listened to this sibnc it came out.I think some is good and a lot is really sub par and pandering to the masses. But it panders t the masses circa 1986.He didn't even care that much in "86.With all tht hype and promotion and that is allwe got.It was a definite misstep. It was a misread of the general public. There is no doubt in my mind that Prince has some great salespotential in him,but it's gotta be more focused, artitsic, and honest.Rave was too easy and too easy to dismiss. I wouldn't mind seeing him do a more commercial album, but it's gotta have more soul. You cannot fabricate soul and heart. Prince has tons of it,but it was just not the right team, nor the right time, nor the right material. It was sad,I think, that BABY KNOWS and SO FAR "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

The Rave album was an attempt to appeal to the general public, but the music did not appeal to today's general public. Rave is a song that Prince had around in his vault since the 80s. It would be good for Prince to try something different next time out. Why not let another producer handle a few of the songs on his next album? Prince can write, arrange, produce half the album and then an outside producer, maybe someone at Clive Davis's label, can produce the other half of the tracks. I know he's been his own producer since his debut, but like I said, maybe it would be good to try something different next time.

The title simply meant to 'Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic', and in my OPINION, the album was perfectly fine, I listen to it straight through ...

it's okay, he was trying too hard to be commercial, I guess working with L.A. Ried will do that to 'ya ~KiKi

If he'd released Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic to the
public instead of Rave Un2, I think it could have done a lot better. But the main reason that Rave and Emancipation didn't do so well is very simple... Where were the SINGLES? All you need to have a big hit album is one or two big hit singles, and you can't have a hit single if you don't release any! Oh, and you HAVE to have a video too. It's no good releasing one half assed single and then 2 months later making a video, then giving up on it.
