Imo it's one Prince's best albums. Do you think it stands as one of his greatest albums?

My favourite album changes quite regularly but Lovesexy is up there at the top end definately

When first getting into Prince I was pretty peturbed by the cover so it took me a while to get round to purchasing it, plus I had read Per Nilsen's DMSR beforehand who had said how Sign O the times was the last great Prince album and things after that didn't have any stand out tracks (don't quote me on this but it was something to that effect at least?)

I obviously knew Alphabet street and even that wasn't really one of my favourite 'hits', but when I finally got round to listening to it in full I was hooked and still to this day it is one of my all time favourite albums and really proved to me you cannot judge a book by it's cover...or an album by it's cover?

Now this is my kinda thread. Lovessexy has to be in my top 5 out of all his albums.

I friggin' love the cover. I think it just captures how he was at that time. All liberated and 'religiously enlightened' or whatever. Its pretty.

Also the lyrics to some of the songs on the album which highlight his experiment with Ecstasy are really interesting.

I heard that the rap in alphabet st and the whole of anna stesia are about it.

Yes. It still stands as his greatest album!!!

It is a pretty album.. Got a funky, cosmic feel to it.

Whether he is talking about himself as the protagonist in the song or not, 'Anna Stesia' is one of the most honest moments in his music.

Having the album be set out as a singular track (well some editions come with seperate tracks) brings a certain fluidity to the album.

Really? I didn't know that, next time I hear those songs I'll keep that possible conotation in mind

He talks about it in this 1990 Rolling Stone interview ( you may have read it previously)..

"I was very angry a lot of the time back then," he continues, "and that was reflected in that album. I suddenly realized that we can die at any moment, and we'd be judged by the last thing we left behind. I didn't want that angry, bitter thing to be the last thing. I learned from that album, but I don't want to go back."

By the time of the album Lovesexy, Prince says, he was a certifiably nicer human being -- and a happier creator. "I feel good most of the time, and I like to express that by writing from joy," he says. "I still do write from anger sometimes, like 'Thieves in the Temple.' But I don't like to. It's not a place to live."

. Yeah had read stuff around it, and guess if he's saying he doesn't want to be there (angry place), he can still put it on or snot performing those so G's I a persona. Creatively it's really interesting. I wrote short stories and recently completed an MA, and always try now to have a positive, uplifting idea behind it - but sometimes the negative and sometimes evil lends itself to better storytelling, with the positive seeming contrived whereas all art is a contrivance. . Hold on to ur soul y'all!

The dance: Purple Rain, masterpiece

It's one of my favorite Prince albums.....it would be in my Top 10.

Starts off well. Falls apart after the title track for me (which is my fav track off the album). But I do like how consistant the general feel and production of the album is though. No hodge podge that scatters some of his other albums....

I feel the same way.That song is explosive! Would have been a much stronger second single than "Glam Slam".

That track played live on a bootleg I've heard is actually more energetic than the album version! The synth melody that underpins the song has so much bite. It's a song filled with invention, bravery and energy.

If anyone questions my fandom for the Prince of today, I just need to think about his achievements of the past...I'm eternally grateful for the magic he came up with and he's worth following all the way because it was so damn good.

A question though: on the Lovesexy track, near the end of it, when there's alot of sexy-naughty talk going on, I hear a beeped out word. I can tell the censored word is 'come' but I had never noticed the beep before. Are all releases censored that way?

Last time I listened to Lovesexy alot was a very long time ago, in the UK, from a borrowed cassette. I bought my current CD version in the USA. Are some country's releases of the album be censored but others not?

I always thought of it as a self-censored beep - i.e. it is a deliberate, fun part of the music he chose to insert, rather than something a label or censor or anybody anywhere else added to it later.

Anyway - everything about Lovesexy - album, vibe, the look and most certainly the tour - is ALL SORTS OF AWESOME !!

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with the album. I hated that it was only a "one track" cd, so you couldn't easily skip songs. This became really annoying to me after a while, but there ar some pretty good songs on that album. It doesn't make my Top 10 Prince albums though.

I dont think it´s a great album. Its just ok. It has four very good/great songs (anna stasia, alphabet st. lovesexy and maybe i wish you heaven) thats all. The rest is meh..

When i first heard that album it reminded me sound and productionwise of MJs BAD, but not nearly that good. But still fresher that the old-fashioned sound of SOTT/Black Album.

And what i realised is, that good melodies became very rare...

i can understand that it was a flop in the us. Its simply not that great.

Just love the production on 1999 and Lovesexy. 1999 is a tad stronger to me songwriting wise but the all over the place production of Lovesexy makes it the most satisfying headphones experience. Some people call it "overproduced" but in the hands of anyone other than Prince it would. Prince has a very good sense of space, so it's chaotic but not just a jumbled mess. Love all the weird horn lines all over the album

ha ha, a good joke about lovesexy pissing on MJs Bad.

MJ Bad has so much power, is so well performed and written, almost all of the songs are hits (BAD, The way u make me feel, Dirty diana, labirian girl, man in the mirrow...and is full of sounds that are still relevant today.

Look at prince lovesexy - just an avarage record, that no really cares for just the few left prince fans...sorry that the truth.

I appreciate the boldness, originality and ethereal artistry of the album cover. All the tracks are my favorites, they hold a special type of magic. Deeply soothing, blissful, and warm. Pleasantly sensual, and even erotic in some parts. I really like all the sexy squeals and what he refers to as "moaning a cappella" in Planet Earth's track Mr. Goodnite. I also appreciate all the layered vocals and the varied vocal registers: falsetto, bass, etc.
