Should Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic have been released?

Do you think it would have been a good album? A success or too weird to make it in sales?

Personally, I love the scattered, fuzzy tracks we got and I wish there was more. From the songs that leaked, it seems like a perfect followup to Lovesexy: bizarre, joyous EDM-flavored pop-funk in cotton candy colors. As much as I like Batman and certain versions of Graffiti Bridge, I feel like Rave' would have been a stronger LP. What do you think, Orgers? Anyone agree or am I crazy?

It would have been very interesting, I think! I like all of the tracks I've heard, but I really like Batman and GB, too. Perhaps we can hope against hope that one of the configurations will be released with the remasters.

Judged by the tracklists and how much they've changed he just had a title for the album and some songs he wanted to put on it. I like the general vibe of the songs we've heard so far from that project, but I doubt he would have released any of the known configurations as such.

Sure, I wish he had put out a "real Prince album" that year instead of Batman, but doing Batman allowed him to enjoy a few more years of global superstardom. However, people who don't really know what Prince's stuff is like still laugh at him for doing "Batdance" and the entire OST (not that we fans wouldn't know that there's quite a lot of depth to the music on the album despite the superfluous presentation).

hmmm

01 The Voice Inside - Meh!
02 Melody Cool - Prince or Mavis? Doesn't really work with Prince vox IMO...
03 Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic - Great track!
04 God Is Alive - Great track! In this case, Mavis is essential.
05 If I Had A Harem - live yes, studio no
06 Stimulation - never heard it, afaik.
07 Still Would Stand All Time - Cool.
08 Elephants & Flowers - Great track!
09 Big House - never heard it.
10 We Got The Power - NO, at least not the version that is circulating.

Gotta say, I think I like Batman better than this.

If we're playing revisionist history then I would find a way to add Rave to the Batman soundtrack (it's already all over Batdance, so why not) & add God Is Alive to Grafitti Bridge.

Make We Got The Power a b-side to a Batman single and put the live version of Harem on disc 3 of The Hits/The B-Sides.

Done!

headbang

In my not-at-all-humble opinion, of course... wink

Couldn't resist. I figure pretty much everyone here knows what would've been on the album already. The original Rave songs are too obnoxious for regular font anyway.

I never was a fan of that tracklist. It kind of lacks energy, except for Electric Chair.

Based on the last, 1989 known config, I'd say... I'm not sure lol lol lol

I guess the collection seems odd to me because I know all those songs from different contexts and I have a hard time imagining them 2gether. We have several strong tracks. The version we have of If I Had A Harem is so demoish that I have a hard time believing it's the one that would have been released. I also have a hard time figuring out how Good Judy Girlfriend sounded in 1989 and of course no one's heard Am I WIthout U?

This tracklist overall is too odd and sounds a bit like a random collection of tracks, I'm quite convinced it would have been reworked a lot if released.

I'm not so sure,either.

None of those tracklists look really interesting to me boxed This album project seems kinda rushed and unfocused. It's a good thing that he cancelled it and released Batman instead.

There is a great thread from 2003 with Neversin and BorisFishpaw providing some interesting info on the subject. It's titled "Original Rave un 2 tracklist"

It seems according to what Boris has heard that the version of IIHAH is the same demoish version we have, really odd.

I'm not even sure what could have been a single on that final tracklist. IDK, I really wish I could hear it in sequence (well I could reconstruct it more or less with the versions I have but Am I Without U's still missing and Good Judy Girlfriend is probably very different, of note is the fact that Princevalt doesnt even know whether Carmen's version was entirely rerecorded or based on the original recording, maybe Neversin or Boris could clear that out?).

Technically he was supposed to only do a few songs for the Batman soundtrack, not a whole album

So it would have been cool to get Rave and then Batman songs as well

It would be cool to listen to the full length version of Rave with the orchestra and horns in perfect quality, IIHAH as well. Does anyone know if he intended to release the original 1982 version of Moonbeam Levels or if he did more work on the song?

According 2 Princevault it was not reworked. I find this suprising but after all Rave itself was released as such in 1999 so why not a 82 song as such in 89?

Maybe he intended to re-record the song.
