your dream playlist for a 2 hour purple rain radio special?

We're doing a 2 hr special this sunday, focusing on purple rain. It will braodcast live on kzradio.net, a high profile alternative music web radio station based in tel aviv.

How would you edit this? What are, apart from the obvious album tracks, the must haves? Live versions, boots, outtakes, bsides - anything goes.
Although the casual listener will not be a prince fan, we intend to go deep.

My main goal is to astonish listeners with prince's talent.

Thanks for your ideas!

Let's Go Crazy - Special Dance Mix

This is essential, as it's the long version from the film

Take Me With U

The Beautiful Ones - Unreleased Long Version

contains extra lyrics at the end that are essential listening. An excellent quality copy is circulating.

Computer Blue - 7 Minute Version

the 14 minute one with the "hallway speech" is most wanted, but the sound quality isn't up to par. the 7 minute version is circulating in excellent quality.

Darling Nikki

there is a bootleg version with a "lost" guitar solo at the end, but it's not essential. Nice to have though.

The Backwards Message at the end of Side 1.

play it normal, and then reverse it for a treat for your listeners.

When Doves Cry

I would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star

Purple Rain

The album version will do, it's classic - there is a much longer version available on boots from the August 3, 1983 show at First Avenue (This was edited and overdubbed for the album). However, the sound quality isn't nice.

17 Days (b-side of When Doves Cry)

Erotic city (b-side of Let's Go Crazy) - Parental Advisory

God (Vocal) - (b-side of the U.S. Purple Rain single) - NOT ESSENTIAL

God (Instrumental) (b-side of the U.K. Purple Rain 12" Single) -- Essential Guitar Piece

Another Lonely Christmas (b-side of the I Would Die 4 U single) -- The Long Version or not at all.

And,

Possessed (instrumental) -- unreleased track that appears in the movie, but is only available on bootleg in excellent quality.

The Above tracks will total about an hour and 47 minutes, which leaves room for commercials and for the DJ to talk.

There are lots of other things that would be nice to present, such as the songs from The Time, Apollonia 6, etc from the movie, but if this is about the Album, then the above does the job nicely.

PM me for more details if needed.

Great list! frankly most of it is definitely in, still contemplating which computer blue version. Also i think well play at least part of the 12" i would die 4 u...and of course, electric intercourse.

Perhaps also A love bizarre...

I will try to play at least 1 or 2 live versions of album tracks, what is THE (ex quality) "when doves cry" live version around, in your opinion? I'm not super-loving the syracuse version...

also, not to worry - no commercials...and there's a good chance it'll be 2:30 hours. smile

Indeed, it's early and not enough coffee. The 12" of I Would Die 4 U IS essential, but I'd feel cheated if you didn't play all 10 minutes of it.

Electric Intercourse, obviously should be included in the version from August 3, 1983 ("The Avenue" bootleg).

I agree that the Syracuse version of When Doves Cry isn't great. What you want is from June 7, 1984, first avenue (Prince's birthday show). Excellent sound, great arrangement. There are some other great things included in that show, such as "Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden" also. This show is available in soundboard quality.

What you could definately get away with playing just an excerpt from is "Possessed (instrumental) as is a bit lengthy and repetitive. Do not confuse this with the 1982 vocal version.
