Also, There hasn't been any word from Warners on this simply due to the fact that the project isn't completed and any early announcement would unprofessional. As for the supposed June 16th release. If that is really the case, Amazon.com and various other retail outfits would have information on this. Especially in the era of pre-ordering titles way in advance of the item's release. The "Purple Rain" reissue when it was announced was one of the biggest trending topics for the week the story broke with high profile magazines(from Billboard to Rolling Stone) covering the story. The press release was incredibly vague and for a reason. It's a work in progress. This release was not set up to appear on store shelves with limited promotion or awareness. "Purple Rain" is Prince's biggest selling, beloved and most well known album and also a huge part of the 80's popular zeitgeist. This is a huge release in terms of a re-issue and Warner Bros. and Prince have the best intentions to make this a huge success. I can see albums like "For You" and "Prince" being somewhat lowkey reissues with very little marketing efforts. How well this does sales wise can and will determine Prince's future interest in reissueing the whole Wb catalog or just selected albums..Think about it honestly. I do appreciate the efforts of the OP sharing the information that he asecetained. I'm always supportive of fans trying to contribute information and I never discourage that. Who knows, some one could stumble upon a goldmine of information using the same approach. I've seen that before. As with the new Prince album, I really do hope that its new and inspired material and not a comp of songs that have been around between 2012-2013. They are enjoyable(in a npgmc kinda way) but they are really not strong inspired songs.
Peace

Very different cases. Beyonce and Bowie had anticipation on their side. Bowie was rumored to be sick possibly dying, and taking a break from music, and Beyonce's label said they would issue a press release then gave out disinformation before dropping all the videos. That doesn't work with a reissue. Contrary to the mood around here, it's not an automatic sell. What you're talking about could maybe work with a new Prince solo record... but then again, he's been leaking songs, and it's not lighting up the music world.
.
What Big Chick described makes complete sense, right down to the marketing department getting a preview of a potential release.
Bowie did it because he is such a class act and pulled it off masterfully. Also he is known for consistantly good albums. Prince sadly is not setting the world on fire lately. So needs to comeback! |

I always appreciate fans efforts in sharing information whether it be news related or concert reports. In light of reading this thread, I deceided to reach out to a some what high up executive at Warners(US) that I have known since 1990. All of the information this person has shared with me throughout the years has always wound up being true, even if some of the projects never saw the light of day. He's given me a fair wealth of promo inhouse x-reference cassettes that never saw the light of day but were submitted for consideration. I really didnt want to bug him with this question but this is what he told me via email last night. The 30th anniv. reissue of "Purple Rain" is still being worked on and it is not finished as product. They are close with the final sequence of songs but there are working on the packaging and what they want to include in the deluxe set. The targeted release dates are either the third or fourth week of November. Either being November 18th or 25th. There will be a huge promotional and marketing campaign for this release. Also the new as yet untitled Prince album will be released the same day as well. In fact the new Prince album hasn't even been submitted yet but a early version has been played for some executives and marketing employees. No news on the 3rd Eye Girl album. I've always been truthful and as accurate with what I post on this site. I really don't post alot on here being for the most part the majority of the posts and how people treat each other on here I find quite disgusting. There's a least a few people on here that I speak to in private that post on this site regularly and that will tell you that I'm pretty accurate with my information and knowledge.
I would love for this release to come out this summer as much as anyone but I'm more relieved that they are taking their time to ensure the best possible product for this title.

Awesome! Thanks dude! Now the debate is settled I guess (And 4 the paranoid fellows, Big Chick IS a reliable person).

Isn't it funny that they'll release 2 albums on the same day when back in the days they feared competing himself?
Don't hold what I've said in stone. The dates could change by a month or so. From what I was told Warners is shooting for that time slot because is the best timeframe for reissues to be released due to the fact that its during the holiday buying season and those type of sets sell the most units during that period.

Yeah to be honest I thought the 16th June was a little far fetched myself, like you say every big release these days you can pre-order months in advance as it helps them boost the sales for the release week meaning higher chart positions as quite alot of fans will get excited and pre-order in anticipation. |

Actually through marketing studies people are more inclined to pick up a new release album by an artist the same day a classic reissue has been released. The nostalgia and passion sets in buying the classic album with the hopes that the new album will also bring that nostalgia. enjoyment & feeling of the classic release. It's a completly different industry now and this tactic would never work in the 80's and 90's but its geared to todays record buying public. I'm not referring to the die-hards that buy every release on street date. Even though, we are the most vocal. We are actually the minority when it comes to the overall sales of albums. Unfortunately, the record companies have to dumb the marketing down to the almost low common denomintaor to achieve the maximum sales of albums. If a new Prince album was released a month before or after the reissue it would probably sales wise fair close to "Planet Earth" using that as a recent a example. Prince's new albums for the past decade have not been commercially relevant ( with the exception of "3121" due to the strong marketing, choice of singles and videos that supported those tracks. Universal made a solid effort with the album and tried to craft a bonafide hit. Had it not been for the concert ticket sales counting towards the sale of "Musicology"( one of the reasons I respect Prince as a forward thinking innovator) that album would not fared well at all retail wise.

Big Chick - Do you think the New album will be release as a separate album or come bundled with Purple Rain as the Deluxe edition? I think to release two albums at a similar time might cut into sales of either one? Maybe not so much among fans but I think alot of casuals would opt for Purple Rain over a new album so they run the risk of not so much a flop but depleted sales of one of them. |

Why would that record store advertise June 16th and send die hards into a complete frenzy? It must be a publicity stunt.

It could just be they were planning to promote copies of the older version to co-inside more with the Anniversary and it being Fopp manchester with the recent gigs makes a little sense to try and sell a few copies off the back of them? |

No, the albums will not be bundled together. I asked about that. It would actually cheapen and devalue the "Purple Rain" reissue. Reissues are generally contained releases focusing on the album and material from that era. "Purple Rain" is going to do what its going to do regardless. No one is going to be looking at those 2 albums thinking "Here's arguably his best and perfect album with bonus material that sounds like it would be great and here's another album with "Funk'N Roll". I'll think I'll get the one with "Funk N' Roll" on it. I use that song as an example of a new track even though that was slated for "PE". If the new album was priced right the general consumer would more likely to purchase that as an impulse buy more than anything. The general record buying public could really careless about a new album of material and they've proved that since the "Rave" era and onwards.

First off the Glasgow based Fopp music chain has only 9 locations which does not necessarily make it a powerhouse retail chain and a go to chain for breaking information. If you call the ever reliable Amobea records in L.A. or SF, they'll tell you they have no information on the release other than the fact that it is slated to come out this year. I'm sure Fopp's intention was sincere and quite possibly they obtained some false information. As for sending fans into a frenzy, had the OP (an orger) never had posted the flyer/homemade poster and info he saw and we wouldn't even be talking about Fopp and June 16th. Their intention was never to send fans into a frenzy but to be informative on the release based on what they knew. Working Music retail in purchasing for a very large now defunct company, being solicited for future releases months ahead of time is the norm. Information on upcoming albums with tenative cover art and tracklistings is quite common a few months before it's release. Especially with Warner Bros. releases (who imo did it the best). A record store with 9 retail location has no idea of Prince.org and probably could careless. They are simply trying to promote and sell a product.June 16th is actually my Birthday, so of course I would love to have it on that day. [Edited 6/2/14 5:21am] |

I also have a friend that is a lawyer for Warner/Chapel music that deals with copyright and publishing that I could possibly pick his brain later today. But I really don't want to use up a favor for this information. He a really cool young guy but he's really not going to know about such things off the top of his head/ plus he's an attorney who'll probably have to go fishing for information at the Burbank location. I'll pm him later and see how receptive he is to the question.

I believe "Plectrum" will be released in some form in the future. but probably in a different guise than what was reported in "Mojo". The other line of thought was that the new Prince album could possibly be a selection 0f "PE" tunes with some new Prince material. He's been playing at least 3 to 4 songs from that album live recently, so I wouldn't totally consider it completely dead in the water. The WB person I talked with heard "FunkNRoll" as one of the tracks on a new Prince album comp. And that was originally slated as a "PE" track. The only people that have been anticipating this release is are this board and diehard facebook groups. Had the WB deal not of materialized, I'm quite so "PE" would've been released already. This new WB partnership is going to take some time to work itself out in terms of what they are comfortable releasing. I'm sure WB wants to put out the strongest material they possible can from him. Instead of Prince walking in with a few new albums he would like to release immediately. That would not be a good start. I hope the "PE" album does get released. I think 3EG have put alot of effort into the project(for what they're capable of) and have grown tighter as a group and the ladies deserve the release for their efforts. I also like their spunky personalities. Although Hanna really comes off as Prince's mouthpiece and puppet. Especially during her talks to the crowd before the show. It almost feels like she's talking down to the crowd regarding camera phones(which im not a big fan of seeing at concerts. Just enjoy the concert in an old school sense).I don't think the songs I've heard are classic or extraordinary but I do have a soft spot for "TicTacToe" and there's parts of "LOL' & "FULU" that I enjoy. I also dig there optimistic, empowering and positive lyrics and the vibe that they have conveyed so far. I'm also way more intrigued with them more so than the revolving door of almost nameless NPG memebers since 2006. I never viewed this project as a Prince album and I've always have took it for what it's supposed to be.I'm expecting more of something like the Andy Allo album. Man, I think "Yellow Gold:" is great. After all this isn't the same deal as with the Tamar album. [Edited 6/2/14 5:10am] |

I wouldn't be too surprised if the new Prince albums is a re-worked PE. And I can't see Funknroll not being released, it is obvious that Prince likes that song. I hope we also get Wow. Finally, have you heard "TicTacToe" or do you just like the title? |

Yeah I've viewed it more of a 3EG album rather than Prince, it seems to be more about the collective than just him and he seems to want the girls to shine too.

They are a brilliant band and I hope for the girls it does see the light of day, they have worked hard and all these last min shows and playing 2-3 shows a night can't be easy. God knows how they do it let alone Prince at his age. |

Do u think that Prince and WB will give 2 Purple rain reissue a special box treatment with lot of demos and outtakes from this era + goodies in the style of ARCHTUNG BABY SUPER DELUXE U2 ALBUM?

I've heard "TicTacToe". Its actually the PA recording from Manchester that was called "Stop That Train". If you clean up the track and isolate the vocals she clearly sings "Tic Tac Toe " once toward the end of the recording. I could be wrong but thats what I have heard plus the lyrics lend them self to the concept. Check out what I posted as a new topic a few hours ago.

Question for Big Chick: Do u think that Prince and WB will give 2 Purple rain reissue a special box treatment with lot of demos and outtakes from this era + goodies in the style of ARCHTUNG BABY SUPER DELUXE U2 ALBUM? Thanx 4 the reply
.
.
My only fears with this would be how much control Prince has over whats released, obviously he coudlnt mess with the Core tracks of Purple Rain, but the bonus material I'm wondering what he might change or just choose not to put on there for his current reasons. |

From what I was told there will will be up to 3 version of it.One being just the album remastered, the other being a deluxe multiple disc set and the other being a 180gram purple vinyl issue of the album with the cd's that are in the deluxe edition set in a box set with a linear notes book and some memrobilia. No word on the inclusion of dvd material. I wish it was packaged like that beautiful "Achtung Baby" set.

Well, like I said I could be wrong. I tried to decipher what I could of the song and that was the result I got out of it.From what IO heard Josh is no where present vocally on what I've heard. Who knows.
Thanks for pointing that tweet out. |

Hopefully 3 cd's. He didnt mention how many discs probably due to the fact that they're working on it and its not completely finanlized. But what I mentioned is the working idea of the retail configurations of the product.

Because I'm getting sick of the Org's mistreatment of actual news. Sure, there has to be discussion, but just look at how this fact was immediately shot down, completely ignoring that a) retailers have often been the ones to break news of upcoming releases, and b) a retailer isn't going to just put up a display for shits and giggles.
.
The reality is that this is a fact, a verifiable one, and should be treated as such. But because of the Org's outdated forum structure and because of the lousy attitude towards news, this either gets buried or a bunch of know-nothings invade and shit all over it.
.
Look at the current front page: why are there several news items, each mentioning ONE DATE of an ongoing tour? It would be far better to have topics, e.g. one about the current tour that gets updated with additional dates and each update pointing to a relevant thread; ditto for the PR anniversary release, etcetera. IMHO the homepage should inform the casual fan immediately of the current state of things in Prince-world; right now it is a mess where you simply have to figure out what is important yourself.
.
(Oh, and why is there still a box for an utterly failed Kickstarter for a documentary that never was gonna happen? Why was that put there in the first place?)
.
And I bet we would have had a state of the art website like that (and plenty more), if Prince hadn't start waging a war on his fans from 1997 onwards.
Regarding the Kickstarter box, the only person that has access to that part of the site is Ben. I did mention to him a few days before the Kickstarter ended that it should be removed and certainly wasn't going to hit it's target. He's a busy guy. As for why it was put there in the first place, I guess the makers reached out to him personally.
I hear you regarding the front page. Changes are being made. I'd actually like to hear your ideas, so if you're so inclined, then free to shoot me an orgnote and I'll bring it up to the rest of the staff. |

If ..this is 3 cds set so ...my guess for 2 main option :
1st >
Purple Rain remastered the album
official extended versions & bsides
Demos/outtakes
Second >
Purple Rain remastered the album
official extended versions & bsides
Live from PR Tour
...my hope & prayers is for this kind of configuration but this is very doubtfull!!
Purple Rain remastered the album
Demo configuration of the album (alternate versions)
Pure outtakes unreleased from this Era

I would think it's probably Disc 1 Remastered album
Disc 2 B sides and unreleased
If 3rd disc Live Syracuse dvd She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo
If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me? |

Oh ok then. If 3 discs 1 disc of each B sides/ extended and unreleased, if 2 discs a mixture on disc 2. Leave disc 1 as it is but remastered She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo
