Yeah, I remember before I heard Gold a lot of people said it was the Purple Rain of the 90s. Then when I eventually found the Gold Experience in a second hand shop (this was long after it was out of print), I RACED home to listen to GOLD. Even after the first couple of bars of the song I was like "this is NOT what I was hoping for!" I can understand the comparisons, it's an epic scale pop song. But I don't agree with those comparisons AT ALL.

For me, his PR of the 90s would probably be his cover of ONE OF US. I like that song a lot.

For me, it's the album version of Kiss.

Forever In My Life is one of my favorite Prince songs for just that reason, being "stripped". To me it sounds like a man just being honest about his feelings, no pretentions, no reservations.

A weak, lackluster en anoying song. It lacks everything. Incomprehensible that it was nr 1 in the USA.

Exactly, one of his strongest songs ever!

Whether one hates Cream or loves it, I agree it's easy to see that it was the right song at the right time. Catchy, easy to dance to, groovy guitar, innuendo all over the place, and a video chock full o' hotties. After the Michael/Janet Jackson wannabe video for Thieves in the Temple, it was nice to see Prince as the master of his domain once again.

As for me, all those Adore-esque ballads that came out after it always felt like a rather forced attempt at recapturing the success of Adore and Do Me, Baby. I'm talking about Scandalous and Insatiable and... er, well I can't think of another right now, but I'm sure there is one. Probably on Musicology, I've never really bothered with that album.
