What do you think are Prince's funkiest albums We all know Prince often blends pop, rock, and funk, (and Jazz later on) depending on which album it is usually one contains more than the other.
My votes go to; Emancipation The Slaughter House The Chocolate Invasion New Power Soul

I always thought the answer was the Black album.

Not really. NPS has a very P-Funk sound. I listen to almost everything made by GC or that stemmed from him. These were also some of my favorite first albums when I didnt know anything about Prince.
But thanks though. | |

Dont you think 1999 constitutes more as dance/synth-pop?

Dont you think 1999 constitutes more as dance/synth-pop? I'd say it's classic synth funk! I'd also put Controversy and The Black Album in the conversation. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

1) Black Album 2) Dirty Mind 3) Lovesexy 4) Symbol 5) 1999 6) Exodus 7) TGE . Also, coincidently, my favourite albums in a different order.

The Black Album seems to have high ratings, but since I havent listened to it in forever, I cant comment.
NPS and Exodus I do agree are the funkiest with you guys mentioning it, only reason I didnt list Exodus was because it tried to pass itself more as a group album, but it does count.

Maybe I'm just not used to the high rhythms of the more dance album. The only reason I associate the other albums with funk more is because of the more "empty" sound which I always thought was a big part of funk. Which is reminiscent to me of the old James Brown songs and Parliament tracks and such.

Which album did Prince say was funky? It was either ATWIAD or Parade. Can't remember at the moment.
I'd go with the Black Album. TRUE BLUE

I love funk, but don't like this one except for "The Exodus has begun" and "Count the days".
Goldnigga is the funkiest NPG album!

The much underrated NPG albums are undeniably funky.
No one thinks Emancipation was funky? It had some of the longest, funkiest tracks. The title track, Human Body, Jam of The Year, Sleep Around, Slave, Joint 2 Joint, Emale, lots of funky songs on there.

Interesting that you say NPS and other albums have that period were your first Prince albums. For long time fans like me, these were marred by lower production and execution values, with none of either the demo/basement studio feel of Dirty Mind/Controversy/1999 or the warm refined sound of ATWIAD/Parade/SOTT/Black Album/Lovesexy. I love more than a few songs on the albums of that list, but many of the tracks were color-by-number songs for him in terms of what he had achieved before, in every single way from the sound, the execution, the lyrics and the music. In those years, Prince wasn't in a good place musically, and although he did come up with some underappreciated gems, overall he was recording without his trademark flair.
