I've been a huge Prince fan for over 30 years, and he's my favorite musician, but I don't believe he's even close to the greatest songwriter of all time.
That would be Bob Dylan!

Prince is a million times a better songwriter than either Lennon or McCartney. Hell, there's two of them. And they still don't have the pure songwriting range than Prince does. He's written fantastic songs in the styles of rock, pop, soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, new age, electro, rockabilly, new wave, reggae, latin jazz/funk, country....... |

I am CERTAIN Lennon would be and McCartney IS astounded by Prince's talents. Since 1980 Prince's uptown message has gone the route of paisley parks to Calhoun squares to feeling good better and wonderful . He's heralded this message for thirty+ years. I love this message and hope he never quits. NO ittrrations..NONE of them have been as effective at relaying that message en masse as Imagine. The SIMPELEST lyric wearing the SIMPLEST piano figure relays that message with a clarity unmatched...ever. And that's just one song...one man. I'm not saying Lennon/McCartney win hands down and Prince blows I'm saying 'I unnnnnoooo...' I know Prince doesn't win it in a 'hands down' fashion by any means.....no matter how many styles he's put to acetate. As for Dylan...he's a supurb lyricist... but I don't dig him too much in terms of the whole song. He so popular tho, it prompts me to defer. And yes...I know his quote is in my siggy...
