"With a new album, an upcoming tour, and a 25th anniversary Purple Rain box set ready to drop, there’s a lot on the line for The Artist."

As far as major non-music publications go, it wasn't that bad, and was simply an opinion. For example, nowhere near as bad as the 1996 Ebony article claiming Purple Rain had sold 100 million copies...

Does it show the boundaries of DIY, or does it simply illustrate Prince's own particular career decisions and proclivities.

Regarding "Most of an artist’s income comes from touring and merchandise sales but the fact of the matter is that he hasn’t had a big blockbuster tour in a long time either."

Are they not including the Musicology Tour? Granted, it was 10 years ago. Still, it seems like an oversight since the article failed to mention this. The Musicology Tour was attended by 1.4 million people, and also the top grossing tour for 2004. The Purple Rain tour maxed at 1.7 million tickets sold. I imagine that Prince's tour profits in 2004 were higher than in '84-'85. Does anyone have info on this? It would be interesting to know how much Prince netted after the Purple Rain Tour vs. Musicology Tour.

Are you seriously arguing that ten years isn't a long time - especially in the music business? lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's Forbes magazine, of course their point of view is that you have to do it hugely profitably or it's not worth doing. Of course they want to push the point of view that corporations are good!

There are some interesting points there but the author is forgetting a couple of things. The main one is that Prince is maybe the most eccentric major artist there is today. I can't think of another who is so impulsive, so willing to turn down money for the right to live in the moment and have it his way. Do you think Mick Jagger loses sleep over the fact that he doesn't own the Rolling Stones masters?

No. Not at all. I simply find the article a bit incomplete since the last major tour he actually tried to put on was during that time, and quite successful even though it took place during the post Warner years.
