I think we've had this debate b4 (it was with u wasn't it?) so I'm not gonna rant again about how I find digital copies more reliable in terms of conservation and more advantageous in terms of practical aspects than physical copies (let alone the fact that one doesn't have to pay for them!). I'll simply answer the collector's aspect: I was an avid CD and VHS (then DVD) collector, I owned more than 600 CD's and more than 200 films and I proudly exhibited them on their respective shelves. They, particularly the CD's, were my personal private treasure, really, and I never would have believed back then that I'd ever give up on them. God did I LOVE that CD collection! Eventually, though, I DID give up on them: I am now an avid collector of digital files instead. My digital albums are ordered and filed as precautionously as my CD's used to be, and this collection (now over 4000 albums) is my pride and my personal private treasure. Same with movies. I don't own a single CD anymore, I've ripped them all and sold them. The avid collecting reflex is still there and I treat my collection with just as much respect, it's exactly the same thing, only now it's digital wink Not trying to make a point over ur point, just showing a different perspective: different folks, different perspectives smile

I think we have discussed this once or five times... biggrin

Fair enough on the digital collection. I just see them differently.

In my not-at-all-humble opinion:

Any prerecorded physical media I have purchased, can display on a shelf, and resell on a whim, is part of my "collection".

Everything in my collection plus any other audio/video media that I have, including physical copies I have made or had made for me AND digital media regardless of whether or not I paid for them, is part of my "library".

My library is much larger than my collection, and I love it too. It's just not as special to me as my collection.

wink

I kept the physical feel with my comic books trade paperbacks collection, which is now stored in boxes in France and will probably remain so for many more years. I subscribed to the AWESOME Marvel Digital Comics unlimited offer but I guess if I ever live in France again and I'm not too broke I'll start collecting trade paperbacks again if only for the love of my beautiful shelves biggrin

If I might go slightly off topic (which I think is pretty much a given in large threads like this, and after however many odd pages I doubt people really care) may I enquire as to whether you tend to prefer BDs or the Anglo-American stuff more?

I've been reading comics for 40 years and collected them through most of that time. The last decade though I've gone completely digital and rarely pick up a physical copy. Would love to sell most of the 6,000 I have. Too bad you don't still have your physical media, I could trade you a bunch of comics for a bunch of discs... lol lol

Interesting. As a British teenager I kinda gravitated to BD cos' it seemed more varied and mature than the American superhero stuff I was exposed to as a child (I've got nothing against the genre now, that was simply my line of thinking at the time). It's possible my interest was just a manifestation of my latent Euro and Francophilia though. Either that or I'm just a sucker for Moebius' pretty drawings. wink

There r 2 reasons (besides an irrational love for the super-hero genre) that make me prefer US comics to French/Belgian comics:

- The usual format is very frustrating for me: 1 graphic novel of 48 pages once a year for a series (or period if it's not a series!). Fact is that you cannot tell much story in 48 pages. 22 pages US comics don't allow much storytelling either but being monthly then collected in TPB's makes it OK, but 48 pages a year (or period)...? No bloody way! Sure things are changing and longer formats are now much more common but 48 pages remains a standard format.

- When you're, as I am, both a native French speaker AND a writer, you can tell how BAD French writers are when it comes to dialogues (same can be said with movies and TV series BTW). While we are great novelists, we just suck at dialogues: as a native speaker I know what sounds "right" and what sounds "fake" and unfortunately 90% of the Franco-belgium comics' dialogues I've read sound "fake". Things have slightly improved there too over the last 15 years but the majority of dialogues remain very artificial.

I really love french litterature just as much as American or British lit, but when it comes to movies and comics I'm almost exclusively into American material.

How come ur attachment for physical collections isn't as strong with comics as with music and movies??? I mean usually people will give up CD's and DVD's LONG b4 they give up physical book, that's much intriguing...

I used to collect TOO much: comics, action figures, music & video (VHS at the time).

I got to a point where I had to narrow it down and give something up. I chose to keep collecting media (music AND video) and stop with the comics and action figures.

This was around 1999/2000, long before I could get my comics digitally (legally or otherwise). When it became possible to get comics digitally, I had already stopped collecting physically. So, it wasn't like I gave up the physical for the digital, I was actually giving up on the comics completely.

Getting back into them in a digital format years later was never something I expected. And, as much as I enjoy reading them, I'd give it all up again if it meant getting back into the habit of having a weekly pull box, bagging & boarding, etc... I'm just done with all that.

Still have a couple dozen longboxes I need to unload though... wink

dj, you sound like my best friend Rick. He has VHS movies, tv series, etc. out the yahzoo. He's a trekkie and star wars fan as well, so I gave him an old collectible USS Enterprise model that was passed down to me from an uncle. He doesn't have the action figures unless he's hiding them from me so I don't remind him that someday he's going to need two homes. One for him and the other for his collections. lol

Did u try Marvel's all u can eat digital subscription service? It's AWESOME, u pay like 60 bucks a year and u can read more than 10,000 Marvel comics online and they keep adding some every week, both old and new. I strongly recommend it, it's worth 1000 times the price u pay (unlike some other sites where u have 2 pay 77 bucks to get 3 albums that r sold in stores for 10 bucks, old videos that should be for free on Youtube and 8 previously unseen vids that u can't even download lol )

The most obsessional collector I know is my dad: he lives alone in a 3 floors house (!) and it's FILLED from bottom to top with everything and nothing from old watches to clocks to old toy cars to books to DVDs to any possible stupid objects u can think of. When the dude dies sorting out everything, emptying that house and selling everything is gonna take AGES, I think I'll have to go and settle there for a good 3 months of my life to get rid of all that crap (some stuff is very valuable so I can't just send everything altogether to public auction, I need to make sure I sell the good stuff where collectors will buy it for it's fair price). I'm so mad at him for that lol

Isnt that a hoarding rather than collecting? Friend of mine hoarded, it was almost an OCD thing. Took him a long time to get over it and to learn to throw things away.

It's rather insane indeed. Worst is that he would like me 2 keep EVERYTHING after he dies and he's tried every rotten and twisted argument to try and convince me to keep his shit while I actially don't want a single thing from that house, but now he understood and he leaves me alone with this.

well i hope soon means soon this time around. so far prince being back with warners

has brought us nothing new or better than prince solo pilot:

we've had a single with very little fanfare, no radioplay, no chartsucces and no video,

plus we had a BIG announcement with as of yet, no follow up as far as actual info on

that project.
