Bottom line Prince is winning and the fans are winning.
This deal has been rumored to be in play for a while. People have been posting about it on this site for years. The surprising thing is that Prince agreed to it. The possibility of the deal itself, though, was known for a long time. I expected should it happen though, that it would be accompanied by a Purple Rain reunion tour, with new music from Prince and The Revolution and The Time, maybe even The Family. I still think that it is a minor possibility, but the news that 3EG is part of the deal, more than likely means there won't be any Revolution reunions... ever. If not now, on the 30th anniversary of their biggest selling album, then there would be no reason to ever do it. So that's surely the end of that.

The remasters mean little to me. I can live with the sound quality of the old recordings. The bonus material and new material is what I will be most interested in. I'm most happy for Prince getting his masters back, watching things unravel in the early 90s, it was not the most pleasant time for Prince. Finally reaching the deal to get them back he has to be full of happiness! Right now, I'm more happy for what Prince is getting out of the deal, vs. What we may or may not get. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet? |

Despite the fact that as a fan I am delirious about the prospect of properly mastered albums from 78-89 (I am assuming there is little need to remaster those that were recorded digitally in the first place)...
One thing does worry me. According to various biographies the authors have interviewed different engineers that worked for Prince. One consistent thing that comes across is Prince's apparent disregard for looking after the master tapes he has in his vault. At one point several got water damage when there was a leak at Paisley Park. Apparently HM Buff epeatedly pleaded with Prince to let him digitally transfer all the master tapes and/or "bake them" to protect them from distortion. Prince never let him.
SO...if/when Prince does start regaining his master tapes from Warners then there is the distincgt possibility he will just throw them in the vault and they will go to ruin meaning...
These WB remasters may be the one and only chance to get this done right! 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything. |

Has anyone else realized that this has been in the works for some time?
The Purple Rain is set to come out June? Say June 24th (a Tuesday and the day before PR's 30th anniversary).
So this almost has to be well undeway if not completed.
I said it the other topic: Prince was meeting with WB some time ago...and it was speculated it could be about getting the masters back and a PR anniversary addition. He was also said to have been at PP and in the vault as well. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

For thoes worried that others may get a raw deal: this deal can not alter, infringe, or limit any rights or claims any other person may have to ownership partial or whole of any of the master recordings.
That is not the same as did Prince just rip people off at the time of creation. Which we know he did a few of THE TIMEs. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

The master tapes were transferred a long time ago, as were all the individual parts for every track on every album. |

Source? Which master tapes you referring to? The WB released albums or the unreleased Vault material? 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything. |

There's actually something strangely comforting seeing a Prince single with the name 'Warner Brothers' attached to it. [Edited 4/20/14 10:04am] |

yeah there was a topic here some time ago that Prince was at WB. And the speculation was over the masters, re-masters, and a PR anniversary set.
again again (based on the report that it will be issued in june (but I am also hearing not until late summer-AUG perhaps) the work on PR-30 *30 tracks?* would be near complete. *but then again they were tweaking Ultimate until real close to its release. *who was that orger that was working on it? As you can see the wavforms present us with less and less dynamic range in a sort of loudness war. This means worse sound for wrong reasons.
If this is going to be the WB remaster treatment ([insert_your_deity] forbid!) I won't like them new CD's except maybe for the unheard stuff.

Alan worked on The Hits/The B-Sides, didn't he? So maybe he's who they're already looking at. He has done some talking to people about Prince, so I hope he hasn't ticked the man off.
The talking hasn't been bad in anything I've seen, but Prince seems to get upset about odd things sometimes. [Edited 4/20/14 13:12pm] |

Well, the difference is that in 2002 Warners was still largely the same company that it was when Prince left in 1996. Digital was still a new thing, CD's were still selling large numbers, YouTube didn't exist, iTunes existed only as a media manager and not as a store...... I could go on.
Warners in 2014 is a completely different label. |
