. Wise words, my friend. I'm wondering how many people discussing this have actually watched the trailer. I see the potential for a quality documentary. . I think the key will be to show the diversity of Prince fans, seeing as he has the most diverse fan base of anyone I can think of. "He's a musician's musician..."

There's a very good reason that a documentary on Prince fans has never been made. They're all nukin futs! Not really interested in this venture. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Okay, Orgers. It's only up to $2,477. The goal of $50,000 is NOT much for a big budget documentary, in fact, that's a shoestring budget. . I believe that if you really give it some thought, you would really love this documentary (if it gets made). You would: A) See other orgers, and others you've seen at shows. B) Be able to relate more closely to other Prince fans, than you would through typing here on a web forum. C) You just may be called to be in it. D) You would have something to show to your friends, fam, etc., who don't get the unique experience of being a Prince fan. . NOW... how many members are on this forum? I couldn't find that anwhere. Maybe a Mod can tell us. I can't do the math unless I know that (plus, how many have donated). . REMINDER: With a kickstarter project, you don't get charged unless it meets its' goal. . $50,000 - $2,477 = $47,523. . Donations start at $1. For a $30 donation, you get a digital download of the documentary. ~G

I would rather start a kickstarter program for Prince to release a Live DVD. I don't even care what tour just a real live dvd. Screw the fan documentary. We can get the funding and Prince can release it to where it doesn't cost him any money. How can we propose this to Prince?

Thanks Redpumps. I compleletely agree with the intelligent/creative/gifted fans. I've met them in the most surprising places. One time I was introduced to a leading authority on Voodoo in America. I was outside of her studio and asked if I could use the restroom. She said that it was all the way in the back. The place was huge and I had to walk around all of these large shrines, piles of clothes and dolls. Once I found the restroom I noticed a framed picture of Prince taken from the "Come" era hanging over it.

I talked to Ben's (the founder of this site) wife, and she said that there is somewhere around 85,000 people that come through this site. So $1 each and we could cover a lot of fans!

my initial thought was yes! then i saw the trailer. they need to hire louis theroux for this one

I think it might be a good idea, depending upon how it's done. If it looks like a documentary made by a 7th grader in ther bedroom, then.... it obviously won't be very good. So many documentaries of all types forget the graphics part....

I cant associate with P fans in real life, let alone watch them on film!! .

. . Huh? . . Anyway, they set their goal unrealistically high for a Kickstarter campaign. They need to either claim Fair Use and prepare to get sued, or get Prince's approval somehow, otherwise it seems pretty silly. Also, going town to town shooting half empty bars, and people with glow sticks, then intercutting it with people telling Prince anecdotes strikes me as a weird way to go about a film about the fans. I expected the lookalikes, and the guys with rooms full of Prince collectables. I hate to say it, but that trailer made me wish Questlove was in it...and I don't mean that as a compliment. I hope the filmmaker regroups and tries again.

I didn't say this earlier in the thread because I didn't want to be a buzz-kill, but I knew this project would be lucky to raise even a quarter of what they were looking for.
I say this because a few friends of mine ran a Michael Jackson Kickstarter campaign with a similar goal amount last year and they only raised half. And there was a clearer, more defined goal for the project, and it receieved a lot more PR. They had close to 200 backers and hit $20k. And I think MJ fans are more likely to back an MJ project than Prince fans are, because we're still mourning him and lots of us will support all sorts of MJ related projects. And it was posted and discussed heavily on at least half a dozen MJ forums.
I also think the rewards were unrealistic on this project. $10 for a postcard and wristband? $30 for a digital download?
As someone who has already made a Prince documentary for a major media station, I know how hard this is. I think fan funding is pretty much impossible for a project that's also focused on fans. A music based documentary, with contributions from ex bandmembers and employees would be feasible, and even that might struggle to be fan-funded, it'd more than likely have to be financed by a network partner.

Just hoping that "one dude", who always shows up wearing this favorite Purple Rain outfit, is front and center...and makes us all look like uber-dorks.

That's a a sizeable amount of donations too! The projects I know that did well off Kickstarted asked for 6k maybe 10k tops. They had huge support networks, producers with big credits, and still had to come in at the last minute and put a phoney donation for the remaining amount on to their credit cards, so they didn't lose whatever had been donated. Bigger investors contacted them off the site as a result of the campaign. You can raise 40k on there, it happens, but more often than not, you can sweat it out just raising 6k, which is probably where this particular filmmaker should have set the bar.

Exactly. I think with a great deal of campaigns, they fail because they simply set unrealistic goals. Better to set achievable goals, if you exceed them then great! If you don't exceed them, then you do the best job you can with the money you've raised, even if it's not as grandiose as you may have originally envisioned. |

A) Who on earth would care about that? B) I'll never relate to most Prince fans, especially the obsessive ones who believe he owes them the world C) WOW D) They think I'm sad enough already!
I'll keep my money thanks

This is why I kept away from the org for so long, too much nastiness and negativity.its too easy to be mean on a keyboard. I would love to see a documentary about prince fans, a lot of folk love to peer into the lives of others whatever the genre.call me,I'll be in it! U can interview my long suffering staff family and friends!

yes i am game. its been at least twenty-five years since i first started to listen and seek out prince at small local house theaters. so tiny everyone gets a good close seat. i won't tell all right now but if i speak with a producer of this documentary. i will come up with more juicy info. all i can say now is i was there from the very beginning and inspired.......
