Dear directer, Mr. Oliver,

Thank you for your letter.

I have some comments and quetions about your intentions.

Shadesofpurple said:

Hey all, thanks for all of your ideas. They are helping us shape our vision for this project. We truly want this to be a purple family affair. I also wanted to share a letter our director, Olivier, just posted on our facebook group "The Purple Circle" as well as on Kickstarter.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your help so far. I would like to encourage all of you to try to seek out to others in order to get this project funded. Fundraising works like a political campaign: the more we reach out, the more momentum we get, and the more likely big investors will want to help. So, please promote this Kickstarter link.

So, you want Prince fans to pay for a documentary about themselves?

Or are you really interested in a commercial exploitation?

Making a documentary is very different from a narrative film. In narrative films, the story is written before the filming starts. When making a documentary, the story is written after the filming. In narrative films, you plan what happens next in the story because you have actors that will play it out to perfection. But in documentary filmmaking, you're dealing with reality and humans that follow their own life story.

Yes, but this sounds as if no effort has been spend on research. This is a long shot, and lacks validation for this project. Why not stand in the street and film whomever passes by? What's the difference?

The key is for us to discover the most interesting story to tell amongst the fans, and this will take patience and observation.

So, you just wait for the Prince freak-fans-show? You want to exploit the most instable or monomane fans by putting them on stage as freaks in your traveling circus?

That sounds like a horrible idea.

Trying to make a buck out of the weak or special people?

We can make this happen once the funds are rolling.

Well, if a freak show of Prince fans is the basic idea, I would find it unethical to support you.

We have the best team for this job with technical gurus and musical fanatics, this documentary can only succeed.

Well, I believe it when I see it. Until now, I have not seen a serious plan. Not even a serious draft of a plan. So, if you have the best team, please show that by a solid presentation of your idea.

The purple circle funds will help us pay for the following elements:

- Technical equipment (camera, batteries, sound, tripod, software, hard drives) - Transportation (plane, car rental) - Hotel & food during production - Post-production costs (editing, sound editing, sound mixing, graphic design, original musical composition & promotion)

Once Purple Circle is launched, we will film all over the nation,

So, it's a documentary about American fans? That is good to know, because that will generate a different film than an international approach.

It does explain the idea of exploiting Prince fans as freaks, I guess.

spending countless hours filming the fans in their environment, living their fantastic or dramatic life.

So, why do you need Prince fans for that? I mean, you can stand on the corner of any street and film all day. Pick a few peculiar types and follow the drama of their life. Why do you want to capture the drama of Prince fans and make that into a documentary?

Who on earth is going to be interested in the drama's of the life of a Prince fan?

If the budget allows it, and that's if the funds are tripled, we will take the documentary overseas by flying and filming international to follow the funkiest, most eccentric and fascinating individuals.

So, it's not your idea and creativity that are decisive for the content? You will let money decide for you what the film is going to be about?

Really? You have that little originality or ideas?

And you get paid for making films?

Wow, I want that too!

No matter what, once the funds are in, the making of this project will result into a broadcast quality full feature length documentary.

And who will be interested in watching it? Orgers?

I don't understand why anybody would be interested in watching a cheap freak show of Prince fans.

And that's thanks to you!

Love from the Purple team.

Right.

Well, in my book love is about respect and making sure people feel dignified. I don't get that sense from your idea. I hope you can clarify yourself.

I agree with dJJ. With any proposal, you still need a focus, and I don't know if showing the variety of Prince fans is a specific enough angle to distinguish this documentary from similar ones. I mean, what makes Prince fans and what they do different from any other musician's fans, especially when it comes to posting on online boards, traveling for concerts/seeing multiple concerts, throwing themed parities, etc., as the preview shows? Just because of their different backgrounds?

To me, what's special about the Prince fan community is the group of diehard fans who document every performance and recording, share articles and photos, keep podcasts and websites running all for free, all on their own time and at their own expense, all for the benefit of other fans (present and future) in the absence of an official platform and, more importantly, often in spite of Prince. There is very little personal pay off and the high caliber of many of these projects is proof of what we all believe and feel about Prince's music--that it's worth archiving and respecting for posterity. It's beyond fan-girling, being inspired to get a tattoo/name your child something Prince-related, or geeking out at the minutiae of Prince history because it's bigger than each of our own personal connections with the music... Too bad a lot of these people operate anonymously or behind the scenes, and there's the ever-present threat of a lawsuit... Tainted love! lol

Still, I'll keep an open mind about the documentary and would love to hear more about it so please keep us posted. smile

Yes, that group could be interesting. However, it takes a very integer character to make sure it is not going to be another program about nerds.

I think you are right that this group could be an interesting focus.

And I think they will provide enough interesting material for one documentary. Mixing their stories with some random drama in some random Prince fan his/her life would make it a film to laugh about those weird purple people.

I really think it's a very thin line.

I think fans will find it interesting, the non fans who think Prince has done anything for the last 20 years as he hasn't had any 'Hits' will not be interested, that makes it a niche market. I think the best approach would be to make it funny, the idiosyncrasies of Prince and his life/attitude, especially towards his fans, it could become a documentary about trying to make a documentary about someone who doen't want to take part/have it made, which could be amusing.

I saw the Kevin Smith tour where he talked about being at Paisley Park and trying to deal with Prince and his people, that was far more interesting/entertaining than any Prince 'Documentary'.

Or it could go down the funny side of being a Prince fan, like find Prince's No.1 fan, abit like the when Alan Partridge met his No.1 fan...... classic stuff.

You think it's funny to portray Prince as a weirdo?

I mean, he's not mainstream, but I would not want it to be some sensational piece that leaves the impression of Prince and his fans being entertaining puppets to laugh about.

Or do you want to make it a sequal of people telling funny stories about Prince?

Sorry, but no, that does sound horrific.

I'm already considered a bit weird, don't need an extra label of Prince fan = nutjob.

Nor do I support a film that reduces Prince his music and legacy as an entertainer into ridiculing his peculiarities.

My interest in watching this would automatically increase a hundred-fold if Bart was to feature!

In know! The director became immediately interested in Bart after hearing the fans in Atlanta talk about him. I contacted Bart but he is not interested.

Bart is not some monkey in the zoo.

His story is interesting, because of what he has been trough with Prince.

And his need to unveil any false idealization. And sometimes revenge for the pain Prince caused him.

Prince suing his fans, as if they are his enemy is interesting. But, in order to portray all the levels and sides of that theme, the director has to be integer and have emotional maturity.

Bart his story reflects the complexity of the reciprocal relation between a star and fans.

Only a mature director can convey the subtilities and complexity that are inherent.

I like how they stipulate that the documentary is about Ben Umbreit and his circle of Prince fans.

That might be interesting. I don't know for who, but I've been wrong many times.

So, these parties might actually be very intersting to watch.

And at least it's focus.

Ben Umbreit and his purple circle.

And thanks for the update, Shadesofpurple. I don't know how documentaries work so it's good to hear some info from the director. Added my two cents from experience since I rely on grants and fellowships to fund my research/travel. For most applications obviously you don't know the outcome of your project but you still need to set up basic research parameters, usually questions that you hope/anticipate your project will answer based on preliminary research. The more specific and informed the proposal, the more money you get! lol So I don't think it would hurt to keep adding to the Kickstarter page and hone in on some possible questions to explore about the Prince fan community. smile

I'm talking about making the thing interesting and appealing to non die hard fans, the org fans are gonna watch it whatever and make comment either way, good or bad, by giving a documentary a slant, like a documentary about getting Prince's permission to make a documentary would be an interesting slant, its not belittling Prince, its showing the hoops you have to go through to deal with him/his team, which is what Kevin Smith talked about, which was interesting, rather than listening to a load of associates/celebrity fans kissing butt, which he deserves, but I don't wanna watch.

That's not showing Prince as a weirdo, he doesn't need any help in that as he does a good job for himself. I'd like to explore why he wrote Slave on his face publicly (Something I found particularly distasteful when you consider what slaves went through and he was moaning about signing a multi million dollar contract that no one forced him to sign). Stuff like that is more interesting.

If your making a documentary about the fans, you gotta show the different type of fans, the fans who think he's a god and can do no wrong which gives him license to behave as he likes and no need to apologise/consider his fans, then you got the haters who just argue for the sake of it, I think i'm coming over as one of these now !!! or the damn right odd fans who think they are connected to him in some way.

Good point but that documentary "existed" long before "Springsteen and I". Different artists are going to have different stories. I'd dare say that with the possible exception of Michael Jackson, no one's fanbase is going to have stories like Prince's fanbase.

I agree with you that a documentary enfolds along the way. Still, I think it's pivotal to get a focus. Maybe that focus will slowly develop.

Are you coming to the Org invasion in Amsterdam? Or the one in N.O.?

I think if you narrow the fans down to orgers, you have already made your first decision toward a more narrow focus!

If we get the funding we'll probably first head to Bobby Z's benefit concert in Minneapolis. I've discovered a group of younger college aged kids who are driving up from Indiana. Then we will definitely be heading to N.O. That will be crazy!

Especially your intentions and motivation.

I will definitely start adding to the kickstarter page about the questions we want to ask.

lol Always love your threads, nurse. wink

The more specific and informed the proposal, the more money you get! lol So I don't think it would hurt to keep adding to the Kickstarter page and hone in on some possible questions to explore about the Prince fan community. smile
