Prince: Better heard and not seen

I liked the Prince who never did interviews. Unfortunately, the interviews show how inconsistant he is between actions and words. I don't hold that against him, it takes that kind of person to deliver the type of art he has in his life, constantly changing in a moments notice.

BUT, I never really cared to see him share anything private about himself or his beliefs. I mean, who cares? Really?

I liked it better when he was heard all over the radio with something new, and had new videos showing up.

I like a Prince who was more heard by his art, and not seen through interviews.

Anyone agree?

We are all so full of doody here

Nah. If anything, he needs to do more interviews, and shed more light on his creative process.

I recently watched part of the 2nd Tavis Smiley interview again and I still think he just rambled on and on and never really answered Tavis's questions. It's like he just wanted to say whatever he wanted.

But yes I too wish for the Prince from yesteryear (sometimes).

Better heard than seen?

Whether he's giving an interview or performing, he's always heard and seen.

What Prince mostly did during his long career is let the music speak for him. Not sure who exactly among legendary performers is truly a great interview, mostly you see edited clips of the good parts of the interview. If it gets to be very historical, like what they did on Muscle Shoals, then someone like Prince could be entirely fascinating, talking about Paisley Park, etc. but don't hold your breath -- it's safe to say Prince won't be out there being as communicative as Bono or others.

Eh?

He has been "mysterious" and let the music talk for decades. And your last statement only suggests that musicians aren't the only people to have stupid thoughts. Few things make people look dumber than a blanket generalisation!

does prince sometimes say weird, loony and cringeworthy things? yes absolutely.

would it be better if prince shut the hell up? no, absolutely not.

if anything, i think the prince from the 80s was more annoying than prince is now.

at least now he engages in conversations, even if he sometimes pushes ahead with

his own agenda, regardless of the questions they ask him. but hey, that's prince.

but for at least a decade now he's kind of a modell guest for tv shows and seems

to be a lot more relaxed and open.

things don't tend to get awkward anymore, not unless some clueless host asks a

really stupid or irrelevant question that makes us at home roll our eyes as well,

and even then prince will often brush it off with a funny look or quick reply and

move on.

i always think that if he wanted to control his interviews on tv than he would have

all the questions written down before the interview even started, which is not the

case imo, since prince often does go off on 'rants' about one thing or another, that

the interviewer never even asked about lol

but he comes across as human, humorous, often intelligent and just a good sport

these days. and i enjoy watching that. especially when he drops little nuggets of

information about his recordings or in house details, that's just priceless.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I don't want to know anything about the artist as a person. Not just Prince but most people I listen to. Plus, he speaks clear as mud.

Totaly agree with the letting his art speak instead of candid interviews. It's more fun wanting an interview than actually getting a whole series of them from him.... unless he pulls shit like he did on that msnbc interview where he made the reporter tear up from being put on the spot... all in good fun. lol

His days up until Emancipation were very mysterious and great as far as his keeping interviews very rare or very weird. I hated him appearing on Oprah.

The Prince mythos is much better imparted through hidden messages in videos, artwork, through crazy concept albums, lyrics or style changes.

Who was the MSNBC reporter? I don't think I've seen that.. I thought Oprah was somewhat awkward, but I think it was understandable considering the curcumstances. That appearance should have been cancelled immediately. I really like when he does interviews with people he's comfortable with.. like Leno or Tavis- he was always more laid back and it was never too awkward (minus the chemtrails neutral )

Now in today's social media craze. An artist can't get away with being mysterious anymore like Prince use 2 b. Prince himself had to give in and join social media or risk being nonexistent in the media with younger fans. Even a lot of Prince's OLDER fans don't have twitter & instagram accounts. I know Prince hated it @ first. But now he realizes he has product to sale. Especially now with him gaining ownership of his masters.

Yes it was fun for us when Prince was incognito. But its more fun to me now to know he is showing his quirky sense of humor & articulate mind more to the public.

I wonder if Mj was alive now would he have joined social media???

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

It was Maria Bartaromo, and it was a great interview. You can probably find it on youtube. He was flirting with her unmercilessly and had her all flustered at a couple of points. He also tried to get her to sing, which ws hilarious.

I like when he does interviews but I get what you mean about "knowing" celebrities. There is no glamour or mystery in Hollywood anymore thanks to social media (especially Twitter and Vine)

It will never happen. 99.9% of all interviewers ask him dumb questions about his family, his hair, his religious beliefs, and never any specific music questions, and hardly any real questions about the unreleased tracks, and when they do, we only get half baked answers that don't really give any true insight...so interviewing him is probably a waste of time, but I'll still watch when he gives them, like some stupid drone/fanatic

That dude and his girlfriend pissed me off.

I rewatched the Ellen interview from '04 the other day and I still can't make out why he reacted the way he did when asked if he'd wear her boxers... sad I don't think (and yes, I realize this would normally be a ridiculous statement considering he doesn't usually hold back), but I don't think he'd have the audacity to react the way he did if it were in some way related to her being gay, (like some have claimed)... but it seemed way over-dramatic if it was mearly in response to the thought of simply wearing underwear.. Whatever it was, it made me so uncomfortable and I felt bad for Ellen. confused

That whole boxers thing was hilarious - and I seriously doubt Ellen was offended. Everybody knows Prince doesn't (or didn't, anyway) wear underwear. And boxers? Honestly, now, does Prince look like a boxers kind of guy to you? lol
