THE POPE - best rap attempt? Do you think THE POPE is his best attempt at rap? if not what do you think?

For vocal delivery, flow, word play and rhyme, it has to be Days of Wild (especially Beautiful Experience live version. Pope is a weak singy-rap IMO. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

For me, his best rap performance will always be "Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This".

"Acknowledge Me" and "Funky Design" are my favorite songs that Prince raps in. |

I think P's hip-hop tracks are only as good as the songs they're paired up with. On its own, Dead on It sounds like a dorky dad trying to be hip, but in context of the zany, bassy Black Album, it's right at home. You notice the grooves more and the lyrics less. But as a standalone, I think The Pope is his best because he sounds like Prince just being Prince. Usually, P tries to be gritty and up-to-date on his rap tracks and its embarassing. I hate Days of Wild outside of The Dawn's tracklist. [Edited 3/31/14 13:14pm]

I do like The Pope, but it isn't as strong as Face Down, which is rawer, and to me more impassioned. Days of Wild is also a favourite of mine, sadly no more swearing...

I might get laughed at for this, but I actually really like the rap in Pussy Control, ridiculous chorus aside (which actually I still quite like, but it kinda destroys any hip hop credibility the song might have had.) My least favourite would have to be in songs like Sticky Like Glue, Love 2 The Nines and Extralovable 2011 (although the last one's not Prince), because they effectively ruin songs I had really enjoyed up until that point. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

Ummm...no. That would be Days of Wild. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This has to be a joke. Even the Pope himself hates the song. Makes Jughead look like a classic. Pure 100% horrible trash. Belongs on an island with The Wedding Feast.

I second "Acknowledge Me."

I've always failed to register "Days Of Wild" as "rap". At least the live versions have always been too toneful and half-sung for that.
Now that the rapped part on "Acknowledge Me" has been pointed out, I think that might be his best "more serious attempt" at rapping. Most of his "hiphop" tracks that have just him and no guest rappers are some sort of parodies.

dippy dippy dope.......seriously.
should there be more said about this track?
i never liked his hip hop style rapping attemps, he doesn't have the voice for it.

Best rap 'attempt' is a good way of putting it. Prince will be remembered for a lot of things. Rap isn't one of them. Actually, that's not a bad thing.

I quite enjoy a lot of Prince's rap elements, at least when he's the one rapping. Funky Design, 18 & Over, Days of Wild, Face Down...there's a lot of songs that bring a fun, funky element with his unique approach to the medium.
.
I think a lot of Prince fans just hate rap, period, and that they tend to divide themselves into the ballad vs. funk, and pop vs. rock categories since he's pretty good at all those things but can't cater to everyone's taste quite all of the time.
.
Peronally, I get bored with/loathe most of the ballads and wish he'd bust out the guitar more often. I also like the disco-ish things he does that's heavy on horns/synth and especially his funk endeavors that have a heavy back beat and thick drums. But a lot of people around here worship things like "Empty Room" that just absolutely put me to fucking sleep.
.
As an aside, and not start a thing, but I've been here a long time and have noticed repeatedly that a lot members here just hate when Pricne gets - for lack of a better way to put it - too black sounding.

Althought it's not a pure rap song, I've always enjoyed his flow in "Get Off"...
Otherwise 18 and Over and Y Should I do that when I can do This....
