If we're talking about heart wrenching songs, whether you shed a tear or not :
I Hate U / Dinner with Dolores -- back to back, in the late 90s, could induce a little moistness in the eyes during the best guitar parts as well as leave you ready for something bouncy. Sometimes It Snows in April / Big Tall Wall -- back to back, is like the ideal carthasis if you're truly ready to deal with the death of someone.
But afterward, you'll need to put Scarlet Pussy, Lalalaheeheehee and $ or Money -- back to back, these will leave you elemental and instinctual. Try it, you'll like it.

Holy River - some lyrics I could really relate to . Comeback - same again some lyrics I could relate to after losing my mother and knowing he was more than likely referring to the son he lost

. The thread Oldfriends4sale started about 'Wally' gave me goosebumps and about made me cry, I don't think I would listen to it even if it were released. Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

If he'd sing his meaningful lyrics like he really meant it (much like he did with purple rain), then there may be more tears shed over his songs. Prince just doesn't sing those type songs from his heart. It's like he's afraid to sound broken hearted, hurt or lonely. Take I love u but I don't trust u anymore, for instance... Starts off kinda promising,but...that falsetto voice carried no emotion in that song. Nothing compares 2 u is another. Sinead O'Conner sounded emotionally hurt in that song. When prince sings it,it's nothing more than him performing...no feeling the lyrics at all. IMO...the nc2u from the b sides is chock full of emotion. Same with empty room. This may be a typically male female thing. Hiding, shielding, and suppressing some emotions, I.e. love, is much more often passed and pushed onto/into males. So maybe to some degree prince is holding back a bit due to an effective process put into place by family and society... I still very much feel prince reliving emotionally the stories that make those songs...hell, even another lonely xmams...and that story seems nearly purely fictional. ....IMO... I wonder if Prince realizes how much most of the people from that time period adore him? . but watching this performance was dreamy, watching their hands move on the guitars in sync I forgot where I read if, maybe it was her website <173764Dspan>From her comments on that Reflections performance she was actually reflecting herself and was in a state of admiration. She said something 2 the affect of 'he's still very beautiful' etc etc . U see that look in just about every performance with them 2gether since the start . Wendy joined him at the Target Center 7.7.07 show and they did a little of Sometimes It Snows In April and it softened my heart and I remember in listening 2 it a woman cried out and I said to myself "i understand purple sister"
beautiful pic...very nice

Dodger I get the same feeling from "Holy River". Been so long since I've listened to it.
I forgot to mention most of the ONA studio album. Very sweet and tender songs... "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

Great question. It has me pondering over the 35 years I have been a fan.
There was a long period of many years where I couldn't or didn't want to listen to Purple Rain, but I have rediscovered it over the last few years. I become an absolute emotional MESS. The heartbeaking resolve (unresolve??) Images of frozen lakes, dangling white ice skates...etc...
Sometimes it Snows in April....goosebumps...

Sometimes It Snows in April is beautiful but very sad.
However Purple Rain has made me cry the most. The live version from the Lovesexy tour is my favourite version.
