Bootleg question

Is it possible that He is releasing the occasional show to one of the higher quality distributors (Sabotage, Eye etc.) and then going after "himself" as part of a larger PR campaign or just a private prank?

Some of the soundboard stuff is awful good, especially compared to the ONA official release.

They also ain't cheap...

With Prince, absurd ideas are always possible, but with high quality downloads available, very few pay for pressed discs anymore. Prince is too much of a control freak to allow those releases, he just happens to not be able to stop leaks...that's why Sabotage and Eye get what they get.

Naaaw. Those bootleg labels pay a lot for those soundboards, and edit them to make them sound more perfect as well. And they come from people recording copies at the venues, ex-engineers or band members, etc. This has all come out in posts and research by prince fanatics.

For example the Japanese soundboards of the Lovesexy concert were tracked down from someone that worked the venures all those years ago (from what I remember).

What soundbaord bootleg ONA are you referring too?

The theory has been floating around for years, contradicted by every past Prince collaborator ever asked about it and no solid element has ever been provided in favor of it, so... no, it's not.

+ we know how and thru whom many of these soundboards leaked (usually people working at the venue or festival).

DC

I didn't realise there was an ONA soundboard circulating, apart from one of the aftershows. Is the "DC" you're refering to that one, or is it a main show?

Is it possible one could have leaked recently? From what I understand it seems very doubtful, but it's worth asking.

So far, I see no sign of a soundboard DC ONA show through searching online. See audience recordings.

Which ones are the good ones? I have only heard maybe 3 shows so far and the quality really wasn't good(in my opinion). Just curious on which ones you are talking about.

Are you talking about sound quality or performance quality? Leaving aside Stimpy's possibly erroneous assertion that ONA soundboards exist (which is true in the case of the aftershow "ONA in Copenhagen", but not, as far as I am aware, for any complete main shows), I find the show in Paris to be very good on both counts, great sound and a spirited performance. I also remember someone else suggesting Chicago in another thread, but I haven't heared that one.

U're all nuts!

The OP never mentionned a soundboard ONA bootleg, he was saying that in his opinion some circulating soundboards sound better than ONA Live.

I was asking about sound quality. I may have misunderstood but I thought he was talking about 3rd eye girl shows. I have the ONA shows(unless there is a DC soundboard). I was asking what were the good 3rd eye shows. I have heard the Manchester shows and the Mohegan sun shows. I did not think they wer great sounding quality(ok but not great). The performance however of Manchester was fantastic. I hope Prince keeps rockin out!!

As others have said, Prince isn't releasing this stuff that's all just conspiracy nonsense.

Any particular soundboard you're referring to, or just a general observation? Just wondering in case there is anything new out there. We can talk about them, we just can't link to them, ask for them or tell others how to get them.

RIP sad

Oh, I see, fair enough. I was going under the assumption that the OP would be comparing shows that have similar content (i.e. ONA) instead of ones from wildly different eras, but yeah, some soundboards do sound better. I don't really know why ONA was the first live release (discounting videos), can anybody shine a light on this?

trax, I've got several 3rd eye boots from the Lol tour, so I'll give them a listen and get back to you. Which Manchester date do you have, the 21st or the 22nd?

I see. But there's hardly been any soundboard raw bootleg recording back in the day that sounded as good as the official ONA release as far as the tone or quality of the mix. In fact, the most loved Small Club bootleg is a horrible mix... just listen to Housequake. It's like someone sat on the mixing board and then got up and left!

Lately, a lot of fans and bootleg "companies" do remaster and edit the soundboards (from whatever source they have), which can improve them.

Maybe he was talking about the actual show or song selection?

Thanks Databank, yes my bad. I was not as articulate as I should have been, and did not mena to imply that ONA soundboards exist. Only that the quality of the official release is not THAT much better than what is floating around, audience sourced or otherwise.

As for the idea (common here among the cognoscenti in many themes) that this "has been around for years" I dont disagree, but things change--even where He is concerned.

P seems much more comfortable with Youtube thee days, releasing 3EG stuff himself.

If you cant beat it, join it, right?

Maybe some of the Vault is starting to find its way out.

The dramatic improvements in quality of late would suggest that is a possibility.

Technology is better, to be sure,; but so is His security (saw him both nights at DNA and He had people in the crowd!!).

Look at the Montreux stuff from 2009.

Look at the AMAZING birthday show from 84.

Is He reacting to the lack of quality is some of the real booted stuff by letting (much better) versions out surreptituously?

Only thinking out loud.

And sorry for the confusion.

The Montreaux stuff is a leaked recording from an official video recording Prince hired a company to produce. So you could say that's official but unreleased. Since it's a digital replication you get no loss outside of compression.

The Birthday show has likely been tweaked and edited to flow and sound better by bootlegers (editing out rests between songs, audience noise before the show, and enhance the tone). Lots of bootleg releases are edited and "remastered" from their source (audio and video) these days because of the need to fit them into a certain space, and also because the software tools to do it are out there. Bootlegers act as producers!

At this point you can find different bootleg releases of the same soundboard show that sound different in tone and volume!

Yeah, it was a new source, but not Prince, ha.

He would want to at least make that a direct order item to his company, like in the club days.

Having listened to a few of LoL recordings, it's pretty clear that they're all much of a muchness in terms of sound quality, all mostly good audience recordings with small variations in clarity, distance of sound and whatnot across the board. However, I'd say that the recording from January 18th 2013 in Dakota is probably the best overall, nice clear sound which is centered well (don't exactly know what the term would be, what I mean is that it sounds like the person recording was standing at the centre of the room, and not to one side). The only problem is that the vocals can sound a bit harsh, so it's damn good but not perfect. That was the best one I had, hope it helps trax!
