Tired of the criticism and nostalgic longings One thing that is really annoying me a great deal is all the criticism and nostalgic longings alot of people on the org have for Prince and his music. If you're a true fan you should've already figured out about 34 years ago that Prince grows and changes; nothing is static. People seem to get stuck in a certain period and want Prince to continuously repeat that period and use that particular band. Don't get wrong, i still dig the SOTT/Madhouse period as well as the RC/NEWS period but what i love most is the journey and the subsequent growth and changes. I actually compare Prince's journey to Miles Davis'. Miles was always moving forward and his music took people to alot of different places. Both the listener and the artist grow from this type artistic journey. The criticism of the bands is also extremely nerve wracking. Every band paints a different musical picture and serves a different purpose. People may dig certain bands over others but need to realize that ultimately Prince has the best idea for who performs his music at any given point in time. I'm sure his insights concerning various musicians are far deeper than any of his fans. Also, i think people need to ask themselves, realistically, could certain bands do what other bands do. For example, could the Revolution really pull off TRC or even SOTT? Also, the criticism of Cora and Josh was pretty mean and kinda suggests that people didn't listen very closely to Bria Valente's album or the Lotus Flower album or some of their live performances. The criticism/comparison of 3rdeyegirl with SonnyT/Michael B is also unnecessary. Both configurations are powerful, but are also different and equally strong. Also, i kinda think that maybe Prince digs the challenge of creating new band configurations and completely exhausting every possibility of that particular configuration. I think evey band has served a particular purpose and fulfilled a particular need for a particular point in time and place of musical maturity for Prince. Again, people criticize Kirk Johnson, for not being that great of a drummer, but fail to realize Prince was really into his programming abilities and he played drums and percussion and his live presentation of his programs was tight. There are plenty of other examples for the musicians Prince utilizes as well as the music he makes but my main point is for people to stop being so critical and presumptuous about what Prince should do; sit back and enjoy the musical journey and appreciate the forward movement of it because that's what being a true Prince fan is all about.

Hear hear! I'm one of those who thinks the 1980s albums are the best. Just listened to Around the World in a Day and even though I like it much better than any of his new songs, that doesn't mean I want him to sack 3EG and rehire the Revolution. They were great for what they did, but seeing them reunite to play the entire Purple Rain album exactly like it is on record...now that would be boring! |

For me it's impossible to "sit back and enjoy the musical journey" in all, for instance 2013 was "a horrible year" in Prince history.
But I do agree it can be overwhelming, the negativity - even I am rather negative too, myself, I admit that..
I believe Prince could silence his harsh critics (including the die hard fans) by releasing some great music once again..
Of course the question is "what is great music" these days in Prince world..
I can't answer this, but these are just examples
PretzelBodyLogic, Fixurlifeup and Rock N Roll Love Affair these singles are all horrible, they wouldn't pass on to my "best" of Prince-songs-top-100.
The Breakdown and Breakfast Can Wait are okay.
Don't U Wanna Fall In Love 2Nite is great, but I still haven't heard the full version played on radio KJLH. But the small 1 minute from the tv series, that snippet is cool.
^ All of this is of course just my personal taste, ---- just imho...
But it is a little hard to be a "Happy Prince fan", it's a mixed bag these days to be "a Prince-follower". [Edited 3/9/14 6:12am] Prince 4Ever. |

And of course the fact that he seems to have no business plan at all causes some frustration. If you read Mojo (just did) you'd think he has an album ready for release. And then on Arsenio he says he's taking his time. What is it? If the album is finished, release it! If not, don't promote it! So fans come here to |

I said in a post earlier and I'll say again, Prince needs to do the interview that Rick Pitino gave here in Boston regarding the Celtics. In essence he stated to the fans who were acting like some org'ers that Larry Bird, Kevin Mchale etc arent walkign back into the Garden and for us to get over it |

the other thing that sucks about this site is the number of people who complain about the negativity
which turns their own threads into negative ones

It's not nostalgia...it's just that he's stuff has been mostly utterly shit b his own standards in recent years...take the lyrics to Screwdriver and Fixurlifeup...high school amateur bands right better stuff than that. I don't want him to repeat the 80s or whatever...I just want him to to do thing that actually feels like he might have put some effort into it indstead of believing his own hype.
That first KOKO gig summed his attitude up for me...just turn up take tge money and that's all that's needed P-p-e-n-g-u-i-n......the P is silent |

^That's true! The actual interview is only a small part of the story. The writer did a good job of turning it into a big article which mostly tells us diehards things we already know. Okay, apart from the crane that pulled the piano into the hotel room anecdote in my case. |

Do you acually think the would want to do the PR album exactly like it is on record? 2006 Brit Awards show was Wendy Sheila E & Lisa hanging out at Prince's house doing arrangements of old:Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, and new: Fury, Ti Amo Corazon -
.
I suspect if he did get back with them there would be some wonderful arrangments and lots of new stuff performed.
.
But I'm still open to what Prince is doing in the now. I have hopes of some good times, it doesn't always pan out that way. Prince needs to take the time and structure out what he wants with a period. |

I generally don't bother with the nostalgia threads because there were plenty of songs that I didn't care for back in the so called "glory days" when everybody claims Prince could do no wrong.
I like what I like no matter what era it is....period, end of story.
Prince changing directions has never fazed me because I like his versatility. It's interesting how he expresses himself at different periods of his life experience. Sometimes he's just plain funny....sometimes he's full of it and often he is so profound that I marvel at what comes through his mind and spirit. Whatever the case, it's certainly nothing that should cause so much angst. Honestly, some folks carry on like it's life or death!
For example, I'm not much into 3rd eye, but I loved the 3121 era as much as some people ballyhoo and carry on over SOTT.
I'm perfectly content 'cause I know he will likely do something else that I love sooner or later.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

Good thread, I have been a fan since 1981 and have most of his music that he put out and i am still a fan.........i think the fans who criticize are "Talking loud and saying Nothing".......the reason why U2 or Springsteen have such success is their fans are willing to follow them on that journey of musical change......some of the fans on this website just want to bitch and whine and express their opinions because they can.......POSITIVITY |

Well my position on all this is common knowledge here but since the thread for once complains about the complainers I'll say it again: almost 25 years and I'm still in the mix, enjoying every new Prince album just as much as I enjoyed the classics back in the days. No criticism nor nostalgia for me here |

Back then, we knew when al album was coming.
Back then we knew how long approximately it would be until the next album.
Back then the songs were decent despite this schedule.
Currently the schedule is non existant.
The songs circulate but mostly not officially. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry. |

Agreed. And , to take it a step further. Many of these clowns who bash Prince's current work almost always come around and hail that same piece of work in 10 years time. People here forget (or are too young to remember) that SOTT did not sell well at all. I was at the Lovesexy show at MSG in NYC and the place was 2/3 full at best. People slammed him during his Slave/mid 90's period which is now hailed as a golden era. C&D or Come were lambasted upon release and sold next to nothing. Now both are considered underated gems. I could go on and on. IMO Prince has gotten better as a performer/musician/vocalist/songwriter in every way. Most people hate/fight change. Lucky for us, Prince is nothing like most people. |
