This is interesting, thx for the info smile This xplains y so many artists have both a channel and a vevo!

Does that mean that Kobalt is responsible for the 2 Vevo channels? It could also be Prince since (thru NPG) he's BOTH the artist and the label, couldn't it?

Also, if u wanna make some dough, now that u've posted links 2 Swami's YT channels u can sue Ben and the Org for a million bucks claiming they didn't have the masala seal of approval biggrin

falloff at masala seal of approval. NPG Records won't have access to the VEVO, it'll be Kobalt, assuming they're the digital distributors of those songs. We operate in the same way, with our own record label, but we partnered with a digital distributor for our last release (INGrooves in our case). And I remember when there was a typo or some incorrect information on the VEVO we had to email our contact at INGrooves to get it sorted. It's a gigantic waste of time in my opinion and the amount of promotion that you can get from VEVO cross-linking isn't worth the lack of control and analytics you lose from not having access to the account.

[Edited 3/7/14 7:35am]

Yeah it was Kobalt - they had sponsored adds on Twitter for Breakfast Can Wait.

Well, now Dr.Funkenberry posted a clip from Prince's channel. The entire show is up on there now. So I'm guessing it really is official, especially since that's what the Doctor is literally saying! cool

.

Still not OK to link to it?

.

[Edited 3/6/14 11:00am]

You can post the drfunkenberry site link. No youtube links.

So this whole youtube thing is still about the dancing baby?

I told luv4u before, this site will go down because of this silly, 'no YT' shit.

Why don't YOU GUYS contact the "prince-people" and ask them straight up?

Why would you have to even wait for an answer???

BTW, MILITANT!!!

Thanks for the great insider info!

Exactly! How can a site not be posting the official content from that artist? It defies belief.

And no worries. I suspect, like many independent musicians, the lack of VEVO access annoyed the hell out of Prince, and that's why he's now set up his own YouTube page.

I suspect we won't see any further single releases from Prince or 3EG that come through a distributor like Kobalt, but he will partner for an album release. This would coincide with the comment he made on Arsenio the other night, where he said "We live in a singles market now, but I'm from the old school of making albums".

He's saying everything and its contrary: 2 years ago it was "I don't do albums anymore, I release songs" and now that. Same as the internet being dead 3 years ago and his almost sole way of releasing the music ever since... I wonder if he's playing games with us or just changing his mind every 5 minutes rolleyes Anyway I'm glad if he will finally get back to releasing albums on a regular basis (which he kept doing by most artists standards, but not by his own standards), since I'm myself an album listener biggrin biggrin

Thinking back to Hop Farm, Prince had loads of associated artist videos play on the big screen before the gig...

Would be nice if he put that sort of thing up too cool

------ Do you realize how bad music sales are? If he wants the masses to hear his new music he has to give in a little to the industry. I think if he can get a distrubution deal he will have a better chance at getting the music on radio and to retail outlets. Maybe he will even come around on his feelings about I-Tunes. I am glad he is taking his time and trying to do this thing right.

One thing in favor of Vevo: it allows old cuts to be available in hi def and that's really cool, particularly since they don't hesitate to upload videos by even the most obscure bands, stuff that we probably wouldn't have, or not with this quality if it depended on fans doing it. And very few artists upload their entire video collection on their own channels the way Eurythmics or Kate Bush did (and even so, the quality of their uploads usually doesn't beat Vevo quality).

Also what the fuck are WB thinking NOT being in Vevo and trying to do their own shit independently (i.e. not doing anything at all in terms of back catalogue)??!!!

I agree, their timidness or being staright punks will cause the demse of the org.. I need ask any mod who cares to answer: What special clause does Prince have in the US Copyright law that all other artists of the world dont? If its ok to post legal, valid videos of other artists then certainly its ok to post Prince's videos that meet sasme criteria. And no, you dont need his fucking permissison.... Your answers and reason why you wont are plain silly. BTW, the US Copyright laws are far bigger then Prince..A judge would throw out any cease and desist that comes your way

They'll upload as much content as they possibly can, because they are monetizing the fuck out of it. VEVO ads generate more money from the advertiser than your average YouTube ad, and that money goes straight back to the labels. But I agree that it's good for the consumer that some material is more available because of it.

Well, let's be honest: they released the records for money in the first place anyway, not for the sheer love of art. So I don't mind them making more money as long as I can watch the vids for free. I'm a deep lover of music videos. I grew up with them, they're something I cherish. Sometimes there are old vids I still can't find, or in terrible quality and that pisses the hell outta me. Try and watch Clinton's Capitol albums videos for example: some nice fans uploaded old VCR recordings but the quality is desastrous. Still at least you can see them, but I'm still looking for these Tony LeMans videos, or P.P. Arnold's Electric Dreams (was there once, then deleted for copyright infringement rolleyes )

Can't wait for all that stuff to be on Vevo (well, not Tony LeMans since it's either Prince's or WB's)! And to think I can watch some long-forgotten vids such as Naked Eye's videos (an old 80's synthpop band no one remembers) or even Taja Sevelle's only video from her brilliant 1998 album no one bought back then but me... All in HQ! Now that's really cool biggrin

Now on the other hand I understand u being pissed by not controlling your band's own Vevo channel... but on the other hand... do u own your masters? There's always a price to pay when u sign on a major I guess...

nothing absurd about it. if you make something no one should be able to sell or give it away without your approval. But I kind of understand what you mean: i think it is absurd that in some countries you can got to prison for slander/libel and in some that murder has a statue of limitations.

That's true. I guess the issue is the lack of analytics and transparency for the artist. At least with your own channels you can access the metrics and build a community!

Yeah, we own our masters. We just do licensing deals with majors from time to time.

The only thing is, there's nothing Prince could do legally to bring the "hammer" down if we posted his videos from his official youtube channel. When he allowed his videos to be embedded he in essense gave his permission for the entire planet to do just that. There are no legal repercussions that can result from doing so...so it has zero to do with being "verified", whatever that means. Ben and the mods are acting out of good faith, nothing more.

That's cool! In a sense I guess u can say thanks to Prince: he kinda paved the way for that master-owned-by-the-artist-licenced-to-a-major model, which was quasi non existent prior to the 2000's.

One question BTW, maybe u know the answer: what happens if 2 of the majors behind Vevo (Sony and Universal) both own different tracks by the same artist: do they put everything on a single Vevo channel or create 2 of 'em? For example Clinton has an album with Sony and several with Universal (Capitol). Sony has uploaded their only Clinton music video from 96 but Universal hasn't yet uploaded a single Clinton vid -not even Atomic Dog-. When Universal finally wakes up, will they b able to use the channel created by Sony or will we end up with 2 George Clinton Vevos? Thx 4 your precious insiders' infos wink

Well, my cousins landed a publishing deal in the early 90's with Warner/Chappell and then built their own recording studio. When you finance the recording of an album yourself, and it's all recorded in your own studio and on your own dime, you automatically retain all rights to the masters.

So that's what Prince has been doing since 1996, when he licensed "Emancipation" to EMI, and that's what we've done over the years, first with Sony/BMG and more recently with Virgin/EMI for our last two releases. We've actually had some legal bullshit going on recently, because a label bought the catalog to another label that we'd done a distribution deal with a long time ago for one album, and promptly re-released it, believing it was part of their catalog. Except it wasn't, and they had no right to re-release it. So we had to set the lawyers on 'em lol

With regards to VEVO, it's a separate company, partially owned by Sony, Universal, Google and Abu Dhabi Media. So they aren't going to cause a fuss about who owns what songs. They simply each have a percentage stake of the company and an agreement to upload their catalogs. There wouldn't be separate accounts for the same artist.

What can we do about the youtube?

selling or giving there is not much of a difference. And the issue here seems to be that they mods do not have any means to tell the difference between legit or not legit videos. The rules here are the same. No posting videos or links.

the issue is what are legit and which are not? Again the fact that youtube says it is legit is not the same and theorg knowing. I agree he should have a channel that has all his videos and tons of live clips and tv appearances. However, he chooses--for the most part--not to. Sure some of that may be over who owns them. But that could be worked out. So maybe Prince is too stubborn to share money? Or maybe he just rather not live in the past? But whatever it is, it is his choice.
