I'm not one of these types who long for the Revolution to get back together. What's in the past is in the past. But a part of me really misses this era. The costumes, the backdrops, and the graphics were superb. Prince was as much a visual artist as a musical one. Each album and tour took you into completely different world and in that world was Prince's music. Even his Dirty mind era which was culled from thrift shops seemed expertly put together. It's fascinating how each era's look is an iconic representation of the music. Man, you could do a museum tour just on his costumes , props, and backgrounds.

Really! Gold era is one of my favs. Loved the focus on new music. Very brave decision to play live and drop the hits! 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I was thinking the same That's why I replied earlier that maybe Gold was Then, 3rdEyeGirl is now would be better Gold era yes He probably did more shows out of the States, but he at least focused on the current album and very very minimum 'hits'

I know exactly what you mean. Everything U said about the visuals going along with the music I totally agree. I hasn't been like that in a long time But that Dirty Mind - Lovesexy period had it together in all the right places. And then when you look at the 80s protege projects vs the 1990s or later they can't compare. even the proteges took you into another world that was also connected to the music/image or Prince current album

Covered this already in response to BVH on the Kobalt thread! Seems like he is playing plenty of the new music to me!!!!!! Your facts are getting sloppy BVH!
1st gig at Electric Ballroom = Pretzelbodylogic, Funk n Roll, Plectrum Electrum (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
2nd gig at Electric Ballroom = Funk n Roll, Plectrum Electrum, FixUrLifeUp (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
1st gig at Shepherds Bush Empire = Funk n Roll, Plectrum Electrum, FixUrLifeUp (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
2nd gig at Shepherds Bush Empire = Funk n Roll, Plectrum Electrum, FixUrLifeUp, Marz, Screwdriver (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
1st gig at Kings Place = Funk n Roll, Plectrum Electrum all played (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
2nd gig at Kings Place = Marz, Pretzelbodylogic, Screwdriver, Funk n Roll all played (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
1st gig at Koko = Screwdriver, Plectrum Electrum, FixUrLifeUp and Funk n Roll all played (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
2nd gig at Koko = Pretzelbodylogic, FixUrLifeUp, Funk n Roll and Screwdriver all played (that is played using instruments on stage, not over the PA).
Also regularly playing Dreamer, Crimson and Clover, Colonized Mind, Guitar.
As far as the OLDER tracks have you noticed the "theme" - ie the rockier side to Prince hence they all fit nicely together in this context!

(Bolded part) Sure doesn't, because 3rdeyegirl doesn't really have a revolutionizing music history with Prince, like the Revolution band members did. I suppose maybe they'll be around while Prince is on this rock journey, then when that's over and they go their separate ways, then it will be interesting to see who remembers their names without Prince.

lol Ida(bass) has been with Prince & the NPG since the Welcome 2 tours, I think she has a cool image that people automatically are drawn too. At least in the Prince world she's now known moreso. Yeah that 1980-1988 Prince sound was unique ie Purple Music timeless stuff and foundational. Like when Prince, in reference to Bria Valente, said 'Sade was taking too long...' that automatically put Bria on the critical radar. Never compare a person or group that's new 2 a person thing or group that is cemented in history and pop culture. . I will say one thing about a lot of Org Prince fans is we do look up the history of anyone joining Prince's band and share that info . We should do a 'Where R They Now' thread on all those who came thru Prince's bands (I think most people are up on the 1980s crews) it's the 1990s members that have a mysterious where a bouts 4 me. Candy D & Rhonda have always been in the jazz world and has done stuff with Sheila E. they automatically went to back to their genre of culture. It's the (dancers) that would obviously have a harder work life than the general singers or musicians.

The PR era is what made alot of Prince fans...I doubt if 3EG era will do that. Hell, I cant wait til its over

Sooner purple rain 4 30 years I bought prince records 2014. Couldn't care. U can't possibly compare now 2 then. Hence he can't even chart

I disagree. I went to see Madonna on a semi recent tour and honestly I have not bought one of her albums since the late 90s. She only played 4 songs the entire show that I knew(and they were not "classics") and I left the show blown away!! Its all about the performer and as good as Prince is if he just played the new stuff with the attitude that he believes in it people will like it. Thats how he used to be but somewhere he lost his confidence in the new material. The Gold tour, Rainbow Children tour and pretty much all of his tours while on WB featured the new material and they were knockout shows. If he just kicked ass on the new songs people will like it because they like Prince. If Madonna can do it with the crap she puts out now someone like Prince should be tearing the roof off the mother sucker!! He just has to believe in his own work to sell it to others

it would be cool for a all Girl band/Then vs all Girl band/Now band

You've probably missed the "point" of this thread. The thread isn't about coming up with valid comparisons. The OP seems to be just telling us not to live in the past. As banal as it sounds.

I'm aware of how long Ida's been with the band. She apparently has a longer history with Prince and the other members of the NPG band, than the other 2 females. I was at 3 of the 4 W2A shows in NYC, so I'm aware of Ida's history/presence as a musician with Prince. I also don't think people are automatically drawn to Ida's image, as much or quickly as they are drawn to Donna, as Donna seems to have more of a 'standout' image, and attracts more of the younger fans, including her style of playing guitar. As far as Hannah..Hannah is just there...in the back. But like I said earlier, they're no comparison to the Revolution band/Purple Rain band members, because 3EG is a totally different band--a backing trio for a solo artist--a solo artist who seems to be currently focused on displaying his 'rock guitar' skills. Why would U assume I missed the point of the thread? I've comment on the OP topic already I said ^^ because I felt like it, I've already responded about the OPs intent of this this thread in post # 3, 31, 33, 35, 38, 48, 53 lol I I know what he is talking about

I know U R aware, I wasn't trying to school U on Ida. Just my rambling of this whole thing. I know u r aware. I am more drawn to Ida. And I was commenting from past threads where many fans here are drawn 2 her and like her cool image. There is a Prince & Ida thread from a few years ago that comes to mind. . I love Prince 'the rock god' Always fell into fantasy when it came to his rock guitar playing.

I've assumed that you've missed the point of this thread because your first comment starts with the words were "don't compare this period with the year of his superstardom". The starter of this thread didn't really compare those two periods, just asked the orgers not to live in the past.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
So only I missed it? Maybe U should have directed that to everyone. No Novabrkr I know what the point of the thread is, this is nothing new, nothing new for the OP . And U didn't reply to that post3 comment U replied to my general post of a Then all Girl band vs a Now all Girl band. Which doesn't make sense. . The starter of the thread is obviously comparing the 2 periods. When a person says PURPLE RAIN was then... they are calling out that period. Could have easily said, don't compare Prince's now with his Past. Hell Gold era 1994 is his past. . 3rdEye Guy has done this before, so I know what he means.

No they're not. The gigs are heavy on old songs, with only a couple of new ones. Now compare to Prince's *legendary* 1980s tours, all of which promoted his NEW music. © Bart Van Hemelen

The Gold era is highly regarded amongst fans. Loved hearing him perform B-sides and album tracks. Dude played "I Love U In Me", for instance. THAT GUY was Prince. The guy currently in the UK is still an imposter. Just read the pathetic fam comment they put at the end of the recent live vid (which was once again LGC and not a new song). © Bart Van Hemelen

Bart, pretty much everyone who has been to these concerts is raving about them, here and in other sites, including the main British newspapers. There have been issues with the organisation and frustrated queuing fans who saw celebrities queue jumping, but the concerts themselves seem to have gone down quite well. Would you be willing to admit that maybe, just maybe, the impostor who has played in the UK in the last few weeks might have put a better show that you are giving him credit for? (And btw, I don't take it personally, but I have written extremely enthusiastic posts/messages about last Saturday; I guess I now fall into the pathetic fam category as well...)

I'm really not bothered by what an artist choses to play as long as the performance is up to par. Sure, I have personal preferences and will maybe come away wishing he had played this or that but at the end of the day a gig is enjoyable or not and, for me, the guy in Manchester at the weekend was not an imposter...
Interested to know when you think Prince was replaced by the imposter?

So far 3rdeyegirl is just typical Prince. Not just more recent Prince, but Prince of the 80's as well.I clearly remember the criticism fans had back in the day about PURPLE RAIN.
Purple-FUCKING-Rain. That album grew into legendary status, but at the time of it's release, oh baby, we were laughing our asses off. Don't get me wrong Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry were absolute smashes form the first listen, but The Beautiful Ones, Baby I'm A Star and Computer Blue had us rolling and wondering just how fucked up Prince really was for ever recording them. It was over the course of the movie, the tour, the award show appearances, the home videos, the side projects, that the strength of that material begin to really connect. The same may happen with the 3rdeyegirl project. I only casually listened through some of the singles on my laptop, and I can't say I fell in love with any of it. To be honest a lot of it seemed hum-drum, but the up side of what I heard is that Prince is aiming REALLY high with this project. He is at least trying to break out of that songwriting box he has been in and incorporate some diffrent ideas. Did he pull ot off? Will this be better? I don't really know, because he hasn't had the oppurtunity to really show me anything, but he was impressive on New Girl. Very much like the guy from the PR movie. That gives me hope. That's the Prince we want to see. The boots that I've seen of his more recent concerts have been a lot better than the brooding angry energy he was giving off a few years back. Maybe there is hope with this project. Hopefully Prince has struck gold, and we are the ones that just don't know it yet. That's how it used to be. "Sometimes It Snows In April" could clear a room back in 1986. Nobody was going to get up and dance to "Mountains" at a party. "Kiss" took a few listens before people started digging it. Every great Prince album is the same for me. At first I'm like , then I'm like , eventually before I get to . Let's hear the album first, then decide.

U may read in2 my question in 2 ways. My intention is not 2 compare, but 2 accept 2014 is not 1984.
If U do, U are asking an artist 2 go backwards to feed u're desire 4 days of old.
There is no denial of the past, but the past is not the now. Let go, or stay there, but don't ask for time travel.
