2013 had some good stuff I thought

As a bit of an “antidote” to the more rocky 3rdeyegirl vibe of the past week, today I was in need of some uplifting Princely pop and put my 3rdeyegirl.com playlist (stuff purchased in 2013 from the 3rdeyegirl.com website) on in the car again. I’d been listening to it a fair amount last week but mainly on repeat to the rock tracks - LGC rehearsal, Something in the Water Rehearsal, Screwdriver, Fixurlifeup, SAIMH live. I think there are some real gems in among the other tracks too.

Highlights for me are the following:

Ain’t Gonna Miss U When Ur Gone – This is absolutely funky as. Love the drum machine beat (Nasty Girl-esque?) and superb little keyboard stabs in the final third of the track. Lyrically amusing too, similarly in theme to Da Bourgeoisie I guess with Prince doing his man scorned thing. If it’s about Bria I can’t help thinking it’s a bit naughty but did make me chuckle.

Groovy Potential – such a happy tune and vibe to this one. Gave me goosebumps and made my eyes water in the car today. Could have been the air-con but maybe not. cool

Live Out Loud – I know this one is not well liked and perhaps thought of as a bit weak, but there’s something about it that fills me with positivity, I love the way each verse rises to a crescendo like bridge into the chorus with Prince’s backing vox. Perfectly simple song suited to Hannah’s voice (did Liv Warfield write this one?)

Extraloveable Reloaded – I probably did not get the unreleased version of Extraloveable until later in my fandom (early to mid 2000s) so don’t have the same fondness/protectiveness over it that some perhaps do. If Prince took any unreleased song from the vault and revamped it as well as this (as he hinted at in a recent interview/press conference) he has done no wrong in my book. Smooth flowing soul-pop.

RnR Remix 7 – This has become the definitive version of Rock n Roll Love Affair for me, so much so that I can’t honestly remember how the original version sounds. Has that 1999 album/Lady Cab Driver (the guitar answer lines)/Jamie Starr production vibe. It’s tight.

Go on give em a re-listen, cheer yourself up but if you can’t stand it cover your ears… wink

Ooh I missed some of those, were they 2013 tracks?

The one I wish he would release again as a proper download is Same Page, Different Book. That was a groovy little ditty.

Our tastes are identical. Some good stuff in 2013. I would like a full album, but we did get a good albums woth of material. I would also like Prince to give the 3EG makeover (Like Lets Go Crazy) to some other songs that are ripe. Oh for....

Lovesexy

Temptation

Interactive

Lets Work

Hello

Electric Chair

The Continental

Whats My name

Welcome 2 the dawn

Cinammon Girl

I agree there was a quite a few decent songs last year. Also, agree on RNR remix 7 being the best version with the Jamie Starr like production (you also hear a bit Jamie Starr vox near the end of Screwdriver Remix I think).

Highlights for me:

.

Same Page Different Book

Breakfast Can Wait (original)

RNR Remix 7

Screwdriver Remix

Aint Gonna Miss U (worth it for Bob George like voice)

Extraloveable Reload

Groovy Potential

Chapter & Verse

She's Always In My Hair (live version from Vancouver off Dr Funkenberry site)

.

Only songs I dont like really are Fixurlifeup, LOL, Boyfriend

Yeah, it's really that hard. A nice idea here and there, but as a whole unlistenable to me.

Let's take "Groovy Potential" for example. The beginning alone (similar to "Song of the Heart") makes wanna go to the toilet.

"Ain't gonna miss U" contains some nice ideas, but its parts just don't fit together. A structural failure so to speak.

...etc...

Way too much mediocrity I don't want to listen to anymore.

Well I only really liked two songs he released in 2013 and they were kind of mediocre to me. They were Screwdriver and Groovy Potential. I thought Groovy Potential had alot of potential but kind of feels unfinished. Screwdriver is the same way. Its just begging for a roaring solo to finish it but it never does. I will admit though even though I did not like the music that much that he released I am glad he did release the songs he did and I chalk it up to paying a $1 for unreleased demos to add to the collection. I hope he continues to do this and more often even if it is subpar stuff. We used to pay bootleggers money for subpar unreleased tracks so why not pay Prince for them. Instead of complaining how bad he sucks now why not just look at it from this perspective. He can keep these demos and we can never hear them or he can do it this way. Now the album on the other hand I expect to be GREAT!! Especially since it is taking him SO LONG to put it out. I am expecting it to be a blockbuster and will be disappointed if its not. But the download stuff is no biggie to me if they are not great. They are just demos and throwaway tracks to me amd I hope we get alot more of these.

Edit...oops...that was Michael b....not sonny t...oh well my bad.
I dig many of the tunes too and have the same feelings for LOL as u. Not the best...but the positivity warms me up. A closet track for me or a guilty pleasure.
Buuuut...rnr7...Bleh...the orig' any day over that mess...but I see why some may dig it. The lyrics tell a great story that's supported by the sound. The rnr7 sound don't match the lyrics...imo.

Still kind of sounds paint by numbers to me, with weird versions of the old songs, and like the tempo is off, even on the new material. Too fast, or too slow. They're great when they go into extended jams. It makes even classic songs sound weak like the new stuff.

But it's hard to be angry at new material with a band focusing on rocking out though!! (and it was nice of Courtney Love to lend the new Hole to Prince).

2013: is maybe the worst Prince era ever.

(Even the albums/eras NPS and Rave are better.. imo),

I don't like any of the new songs - worst are these instrumentals... yuck.

Makes me all so dis-illusioned as a fan..

It all was so great once and now it really is crappy bad... (the studio music),

What gives me a little hope for 2014 is Don't u wanna fall in Love 2 night?...... that's the best Prince song in maybe 10-15 years.

Imo..... the studio music, 2013-14, makes me really sad, and dis-illusioned. It's a really bad feeling.. sad
