The 100 coolest Americans

Photographic exhibition of the 100 most cool Americans includes film star James Dean, writer Ernest Hemingway and singer Madonna

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/10621202/The-100-coolest-Americans.html

You know the 100 coolest Americans must be a pretty hip bunch if Janis Joplin, Chet Baker, Dean Martin and George Clooney fail to make the cut.

Elvis Presley, James Dean, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna do make the choice of a hundred actors, actresses, artists, musicians and writers in the United States whose creativity and style have shaped the concept of cool. There is even a welcome place for country singer Willie Nelsonin the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

The exhibition, which took five years to bring to fruition, has been put together by Joel Dinerstein, professor of American Civilisation at Tulane University in New Orleans, and Frank Goodyear III, co-director of Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

To make their selection, the two curators came up with four defining factors of cool, of which people chosen had to fit at least three categories:

I thought, back in 2003, he was "provisionally cool" - like his net worth, his coolness factor seems to have risen since then.

Nice.

Personally I think Beyonce is way cooler than Jay-Z.

Jack Johnson??? Really?

And yes, Willy Nelson def. belongs on the 'cool' list.

And Marilyn Monroe, Grace Jones and Eryka Badu should be on the cool list too.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I do hope they mean the early 20th century heavyweight boxing champ, and not the early 21st century snooze-pop champ.
It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

Yes, Jack Johnson is in the "Roots of Cool" section, so it's the early 20th century. NOT the snooze pop guy.

there are SOME cool people on the list, but where is Barack Obama? Hell, even Bill Clinton is cooler than James Dean. And where is Michael Jackson? This list is not cool, there is a difference from being slow and being cool. confused Some of these people on this list just slow.

James Dean introduced "cool" to the masses and has remained an icon of cool for 50+ years--of course he belongs on the list...and Michael Jackson shouldn't be anywhere near a "Top 100 Coolest People" list. That whole giant statue of himself floating down the Thames should ban him from any "Coolest People" list for the next 100 years.

Besides, the article states what it used as a barometer for anyone to be on the list. A person had to be or achieved at least three of these things before being considered for the list:

originality of artistic vision and especially of a signature style

cultural rebellion, or transgression in a given historical moment

iconicity, or a certain level of high-profile recognition

recognised cultural legacy (lasting more than a decade)

MJ meets two of these things, tops. His artistic vision was not original and he's definitely not the first person you think of when you hear "cultural rebellion" lol...

MJ has never been cool.

Funny you have to ask that (so timidly) on a Prince "fan site."
