PRINCE - The Hits 3 ???

Just like the Hits 1 & 2 was all about the main stream hits , not the cool album fan favorites. I really think Prince should consider putting together a Hits 3 package from 1994 to 2014. There are several songs out there that the main stream heard on the radio back in the day , but have no idea what album they were from or if the album is still available to purchase. These songs deserve more credit than given and are a major reason how and why Prince is still around today. The following 15 songs are songs I think he could package as Hits from the past 20 years :

1 - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

2 - Shhh !

3 - P Control

4 - I hate U

5 - Betcha by Golly Wow !

6 - Somebody's Somebody

7 - I Like it There

8 - The One

9 - The Work Pt. I

10 - Musicology

11 - Call my name

12 - Black Sweat

13 - Guitar

14 - Future Baby Mama

15 - Rock-n-Roll Love Affair

1 - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World - LEGIT HIT

2 - Shhh ! - NOT A SINGLE, NOT A HIT

3 - P Control - NOT A SINGLE, NOT A HIT

4 - I hate U - LEGIT SINGLE, LUKEWARM MAINSTREAM APPROVAL

5 - Betcha by Golly Wow ! - LITTLE RADIO PLAY, NOT A HIT

6 - Somebody's Somebody - LEGIT SINGLE, HAD A VIDEO WITH SOME PLAY

7 - I Like it There - NO SINGLE, NOT A HIT

8 - The One - SINGLE, VIDEO, BUT LITTLE IMPACT OR PLAY

9 - The Work Pt. I - NO PLAY, NOT A HIT

10 - Musicology - LEGIT SINGLE, LEGIT HIT

11 - Call my name - SINGLE, NO TRACTION

12 - Black Sweat - LEGIT SINGLE, VIDEO WITH SOME PLAY

13 - Guitar - SINGLE, NO PLAY

14 - Future Baby Mama - NOT A SINGLE, ISOLATED RADIO PLAY

15 - Rock-n-Roll Love Affair - LEGIT SINGLE, TV PERFORMANCES, LITTLE TRACTION.

I'd say, from your list, only:

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

I Hate U

Somebody's Somebody

Musicology

Black Sweat

Rock-n-roll Love Affair

would fit on a "Hits 3" CD. I'd put "Te Amo Corazon", "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold" on as well.

The rest are great songs, but outside die hard fans, no one's heard them.

You've left out songs that were singles and did have a good amount of exposure, e.g. "Gold" and "The Holy River".

"Call My Name" and "Future Baby Mama" I could see being on a "late-career" compilition, given that they both won a grammy.

What about Space, Letitgo and Dinner With Delores. All were singles. But then these and the Gold singles were WB so they will never be on a comp with the later singles.

Ah, in the U.S. Betcha By Golly Wow got ZERO attention. I wasn't aware it was well received in the U.K.

Grammy nominations for the other two mentioned would definitely qualify them.

Forgot about the Holy River , and Gold being singles. Gold got a little play here in the states, I never heard The Holy River even once on anything but my own CD player (no slam on the song, its one of my favorites).

Dinner with delores got zero attention here, same with Letitgo and Space. Zero radio play, no video play, no promotion (aside from Dinner w/ Delores played on Letterman show).

Firstly - are the WB releases useable for Prince? I suppose he could 're-master' them if he had any legal restrictions in their regard.

I think someone would need to look at all 'legit' singles across all markets and come up with some sort of graph to decide which songs should make it onto a hits 3 package. It's easy for us to throw titles out there, but very few of us know the true 'success' of such singles.

some of the NPG singles seemed successful, would we accept Get Wild or Good Life (Dance Remix)?

Letitgo seemed to get good airplay back in the day, but that's just my perception.

Prince's videos got played a lot on the video channels still in the mid-90s even if they might have not been radio hits at the time. He was still, after all, "the second most successful black male solo artist after Michael Jackson". If Prince released a new video it ended up being shown several times a day on channels like MTV Europe - and when they stopped playing it, he'd just release the next one pretty soon! That seemed to be his strategy at the time, to be in your face constantly, even if he wasn't getting the promotional push by WB anymore.

I like the idea of including songs like "P Control" on a compilation like this, because original The Hits collections had also some non-single tracks that "raised attention" with their risky themes. However, "Gold" and "The Holy River" definitely should be there.

Please no. He barely puts out an album now if we lobby for another hits package he will milk that as his release for another 3 to 4 years so we could have a 6 to 8 year gap between studio albums. I don't want that. Its bad enough now that it takes him 4 years and counting to put out an album.

His last album released conventionally in the UK was 3121 8 years ago. Since then we've had 2 give aways (Planet Earth and 20Ten) and 1 double (Lotusflow3r) only available on import. Anything will do at this point. smile

I dont know about a hits 3, but a "best of" of the more current music would for me have to include "Te Amo Corazon" the most timeless Prince track in the longest time. I love it.

Te Amo Corazon, Black Sweat, Dreamer, Colonized Mind, Back To The Lotus,
