From the old school
Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999.
before becoming a mega star, you knew it was there, the excitement, the fun, the music, Then BOOM, Purple Rain, the rest is history.

Did you like the motion picture for that era>? The SOTT concert film is still the best documentation of Prince on stage, even if it's mostly a lip sync of a previously recorded live show. Give me that any day over any of his other officially released concert films. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. It's hard to pick just one but 93-95 is probably my favorite era. I was blessed(and spoiled) to be able to see him live about 30 times during the 90's at the Park and Glam Slam before that. Amazing shows each and every one of them.

Gold era (1994-1995) followed by the One Nite Alone era (2001-2002, one of his best tours imo).

I'm going to buy the DVD soon..

The DVD is nice to have but only mediocre at best (not the whole concert, no Dolby 5.1, mediocre picture quality etc)
It was the whole package from 2001-2002 that made this era so special.
The NPGMC, the soundchecks u have been able to attend b4 several shows, the musical diversity of the shows themselves, one of his best bands he ever had imo (with Candy, Maceo, Greg Boyer, Renato Neto, John Blackwell etc.), the quality and quantity of aftershows/ -parties, the Rainbow Children album, the ONA live album, the ONA piano CD and much more!
What a fun era for Prince fans! [Edited 1/15/14 9:37am]

seanp said: Since I'm new around here, I wanted to know everyone's favorite era of Prince. I'm more for 82-87. The breadth of material is staggering if you include all the unreleased stuff. He was so inspired. The guy was a machine then, soaking up everything with no limitations. But it was so natural. Around '88 for me it became a bit machiney and soulless until what I call the second wind post Diamonds and Pearls era. I find it difficult to refwr to 'album' eras as so much of the released stuff in the 80s was from all over the show timewise. I was addicted once I realized this. Did you know 'Paisley Park' was recorded the day after 'When Doves Cry'. What a trip. No conceptual boundaries. Just a true artist. There's no one like this now. Pk.

I'm new here too, hi!
I love his graffiti bridge era, the whole look he had going on then was really cool. And his Controversy-Purple Rain era with the curly hair and purple jacket.

1982-1988, he could do no wrong during that era man...
If I had to narrow it down, it's definitely his Parade/Sign O' The Times (1986-1987) era. Both are his best albums imo and even outside of that he recorded amazing stuff during that time (Power Fantastic, Baby Go Go, We Can Funk, Joy In Repetition etc.)
