Depends on who you ask.

The **AA, FBI and such are well aware of him. So are the filesharing/storing folks.

But it is not about awareness, it is how well his operation works if it would service a Prince release.

Prince is not going to release another album unless it gets total recognition! Meaning the right distribution, promotion & a PR layout that will rival Purpe Rain. Get it! Its the 30th anniversary this year wink

Kobalt is set to release the Liv Warfield album on Feb. 18th so I doubt they would do that if they were not still involved with Prince.

The Prince/Kobalt partnership has finally kicked off with the release of Liv's album today. Hopefully "Plectrum Electrum" will follow this Spring (or not).

http://blogcritics.org/pr...nexpected/

On February 18, 2014 Prince protégé and New Power Generation vocalist will unleash her latest album, The Unexpected. The album is a rock-tinged blast of “alternative R&B soul,” as described by Warfield. Prince served as the album’s executive producer and co-wrote the song “Your Show” with Warfield. The title track is a Prince original as well.

The album, issued by Kobalt Music Group, will be available as a digital download. The Unexpected is the follow-up to Warfield’s 2006 debut, Embrace Me. “I’ve finally tapped into my chi and that’s just letting yourself go, no boundries,” Warfield states in her official press notes, adding, “I’m in full flight right now.”

i was told by someone who works for Kobalt (in the queue for Kings place). that they are on 48hr turnaround to release the album, when prince wants to drop it, it will happen.

PS. physical copies (CDs) are part of the deal.

In the UK at least Prince and Kobalt need to release Plectrum Electrum NOW to maximise the PR getting generated by the Hit n Run tour and his appearance on The Brits tomorrow (such a shame he isn't also performing).

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Kobalt is interesting. It's basically just a distributor that also offers the extra infrastructure that labels used to - and used to over charge for.

They have huge names using them, but have any resulted in hit records?

Kobalt is not interesting:
They do not respond to simple queries via email.

They have info w.r.t. P on the website.

You mean people don't go to Prince shows to hear the hits?

Prince signed the deal because he obviously thought it would be more economical than whatever he's doing now.

You've mistaken them for a record label running a fan club.

That's like getting mad at Live Nation for not announcing Prince tour dates in Kalamazoo.

They're not developing artists or creating musical content, they are a service for hire waiting for Prince to deliver a product he wants released.

They're interesting, because their roster of clients is pretty unreal with names from Paul McCartney, Gary Numan, the Pet Shop Boys to Beck, Dave Grohl, Kid Rock, Trent Reznor, Skrillex, and Moby, Pearl Jam and so on.

A simple reply saying stuff like: `yes we have some deal but no further information at this time` would be normal. (or perhaps similar info on the website)

But it shows nothing in that vein so it is quite useless.

I.o.w.: they are in no way communicating about P at this time.

I think big means in the current enviroment where it's nearly impossible for artists of musical substance (especially veteran acts) to get played on the radio and where gimmicky novelty video plays are counted on the music charts. Prince made his hits in an era when it was possible for an artist like him to get played on the radio and be part of the machine, but now it's the Age of Miley.

Now artists of substance have to do an end run around corporate radio lockout with online social media and "hits" are less important (or should be) to discerning lovers of quality music.

Sure, a "no info" reply would be great, but they're putting their efforts elsewhere. To use the Live Nation comparison, I doubt that company would be able to answer you about unscheduled dates on a forthcoming tour either. To be honest, no label is giving out info that's not already on a press release. I don't see them at fault here.

We all know the industry collapsed, but alternative distribution has turned up some results. There have been "hits" through other means, product tie ins, or whatever. Anyway, what I'm questioning is how with Kobalt's roster that rivals a major label, they're not getting results? A lot of the records they put out had no buzz. It will be interesting to see what happens with the Beck record dropping (they're streaming it free for a limited time) because so far, if I were Prince, I'd worry that they've done little for the big names they represented.

I think you're confusing their publishing/administration/synch clients with their label services clients. Beck, for example, is on Capitol. Most of Kobalt's clients have their music released and promoted by other labels but use Kobalt for rights administration. The label services division (what Prince is using) has only been around a couple of years and only has a handful of clients.

If anyone actually thinks Prince's cd is going to sell you are kidding yourself. Kobalt will distribute it and his die hards will buy it and that will be it. It will do pretty much like Lotusflower and 3121 did. Strong week 1 sales and then fade into oblivion. The only way PRince will sell records is if he gets it on the radio and promotes it heavily on tv which we all know he will not do anymore at this stage of his career. He still lives in his purple bubble and truely thinks he is still bigger than what he actually is. I wish he would just release the album for us fans who still care about him and start on the next project as it seems to take him forever to make a new album.

i think his actions post Musicology actually show the opposite, that he knows there's diminishing returns on new album sales so he maximizes his profit making through other means. Though I agree with you that he should just release the new music, the problem is we're not privy to the entire set of reasoning behind why he's waiting more time.

Change it one more time..
