What artists has Prince-introduced- you to as a result of who he listens to ? What artists has Prince-introduced- you to as a result of who he listens to ? For example even though I knew of the Soul Children through my Mom’s records, I have now re-discovered their catalogue as a result of the “The Sweeter She Is” rehearsal.

None...I can love Prince without listening to everybody he likes or works with. I stopped doing that in the early 90's.

I actually can't think of one. The only associated artist I like is the Time so I guess that would be my answer. The other music I listen to is nothing that Prince would listen to.

I should clarify and eliminate any actual protege's from consideration.

The only one I can think of is Ani DiFranco, but it was such a minuscule collaboration and I didn't listen to her own work for long.

Andy Allo, Janelle Monae off the top of my hand. I also sought out Santana's "Europa" after hearing "When I Lay My Hands on You".

I have Prince to thank for my being huge fans of these musicians/groups.

As a white middle England teenager who grew up with British electropop, Prince introduced me to modern American black funk. It blew my mind. I went from cricket lessons to bunking off school to get up to bad areas of London to buy the latest Jesse Johnson 12" import from the states. .

Although the OP has ruled out associated artists, I think it must be said that most of the music that Prince has introduced me to is his own music delivered through other performers. Most of them (even the ones I LOVED back in the day) are forgettable now. . After reading the other posts, I will add Parliament/Funkadelic to my list. I was amazed at how certain sounds that Prince used (i.e. the dog barking in La, La, La, He, He, Hee) were used before by Parliament/Funkadelic.

As far as actually getting into them--P-Funk. I might have eventually listened to them anyway, but I actually got around to doing it because of Prince. That opened up a huge amount of music. I knew George Clinton and company existed back in the late 70's (because of a little article in a Columbia House record club Year in Music book--and I was fascinated by the little description of how they recorded as Funkadelic to get around contract issues as Parliament, and then started all sorts of satellite groups--but I'd never heard a note, and there was no funk in my hometown at the time, so I never heard them back then). But I actually listened to them years later because of the Prince connection.

Larry Graham (before they worked together) thanks to the 1994 covers. In a way P was my entry door into funk and afro-american music in general, he and MJ. Because they were catalogued as funk artists, I took interest in the genre when I was about 15 or 16, and started to buy all kind of funk records.
I also discovered many artists through him working with them or giving them tracks, too, but that's out of topic so I won't go into that. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I've certainly read that he liked them, from two separate sources - one was an interview with an NPG member. Is there even a liner note thankyou? Can't remember.
Can you imagine if P did cover a Cocteau Twins song? I'd love to hear his version of 'Aikea Guinea'. That would stretch his falsetto. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

This is an excellent topic, but I've most always known about other artists he associates with before he has known about them... Nikka Costa, Amy Winehouse, etc., etc.
As far as his influences, I also knew, listened to, and was influenced by these... Santana, Hendrix, JB, Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament, Gary Numan, etc., etc.
That was one of the things that drew me to his music... I was hearing influences that were absorbed and transformed into his unique sound and style, ultimately making it his own. "He's a musician's musician..."
