P covered Cocteau Twins??? eek eek eek

Not covered...but he sampled them at the start of Love Thy Will Be Done.

A Google search tells he sampled the intro from Pitch the baby for LTWBD... A quick listen to the intro of PTB doesn't make it so obvious to me eek What has he sampled exactly????

Well, I'd have said the beginning was more reminiscent of Fifty-Fifty Clown from the same album. I think that's the one you should compare.

I've just listened to both and the similarity in the beat and that scratchy insistent synth sound is pretty much unmistakeable. I'm so glad he likes them..having him recognise the work of Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush (my two other major music faves) fair warms my cockles!

eek eek It's pretty obvious indeed, it's funny I'd never noticed that the few times I'd listened to that album before, must have listened with one ear only lol

I wouldn't be 100% positive that it was sampled, though, maybe just imitated with perfection, IDK, could be both.

actually in some kind of way me too..because I discovered janelle watching the bet awards in 2010 that included his tribute which featured her..and I was like who is this chick so different and original? then I realized she was the same girl who just had a song recently out called tightrope..and her debut album was out like the month before..after that I became addicted to the archandroid..so addicted that actually I started to listen to more Prince's music because of her connection with him..and after I bought or downloaded basically the entire Prince's discography..I only knew his most popular songs before tbh..she made me love and appreciate Prince more in my case.. wink

Obviously I knew you were seriously into Janelle--interesting that she kind of brought you to Prince instead of the other way around.

kinda funny I guess..actually because I discovered her with something with him involved but like for pure coincidence like the tv was on for some reason that I don't remember well.. and I became first a big fan of hers, like I wasn't prepared for an artist like her in 2010 tbh..the Archandroid album was a defining record of my early 20's,I don't even know how many times I listened to it always finding new elements to understand her world better, the way she conceives art, her messages in her music, what she represents for women and for artists in general in the contemporary musical landscape,a strong black girl who isn't afraid of who she is, a black girl with her own record label since the 2000's ..I couldn't name a female black artist like her probably since lauryn hill and erykah badu. like I grew up idolazing women like patti smith and similar so I'm not really the type for appreciate the typical stereotypes out there for black female singers.sorry beyonce and similar..

Anyway later I started to really appreciate Prince as a musician and all because I took time for really listen to his old material and all the rest..janelle was speaking sometimes about her relationship with him, doing concerts with him, she was calling him one of her mentors and all..plus I always listened to a lot of music but for some reason I never really took time to listen carefully to his records before..

As far as actually getting into them--P-Funk.

I would say the same there, P-Funk! Starting with the Cinderella Theory, I began to explore their discography. I had periods where I dug George far more than Prince, he just went so deep with his music and philosophy. I was obsessed with Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo-Doo Chasers) and Maggot Brain, could get lost for hours in that music. And I've seen them live way more often than Prince, 6 times seeing Bootsy or George to the one time I've seen Prince. That had more to do with opportunity really, if I had more chances to see Prince, I definitely would. I love their collaborations, and wish there were more.

The other artist is Mavis, that voice! I wish he had recorded more material with her. The last several albums she's done with Jeff Tweedy are amazing.
