'Planet Earth' gets our initial verdict

NME.COM has heard the album which has caused a stir in the music industry and here's our initial reaction:

Guitar

The album's first single sees Prince treading more familiar pop territory on this bouncy distant cousin of 1986 classic 'Kiss'. Smattered with a swaggering guitar riff which borrows heavily from U2's 'I Will Follow', the catchy chorus sees the singer confessing: "I love you babe/But not like I love my guitar."

It was directed by Sanaa Hamri on 04/24/08, about 5 years ago.

This is a different clip then the one used for Verizon in 2007. This was shot at Paisley Park with a couple other videos around the same time.

I don't hear any similarity between any parts of the bass line of Duran Duran's "Planet Earth" and the bass line of the album version of "Guitar". The closest any part of that song gets to "Guitar"'s bass line, IMO, is the "Bah bah bah, bah bah bah bah bah" melody mouthed by Simon LeBon at 2:24 and then at the end of the song.

But there is no doubt the lead line is almost exactly like that of "I Will Follow". Prince adds a little run-up in the very first part of the riff (starting the high-E-string on D or D# and moving up to E), almost certainly to avoid a plagiarism of U2's lead line.

i've been listening to the demo version of this one a lot lately,

it's so bouncy and breezy

this song is a forgettable throwaway that sounds like it could be on Chaos&Disorder
