Has Prince become insecure about his new studio work? I am just wondering WHY, really, has it taken so, so, so long (an unprecedented amount of time) for Prince to drop a bonafide album of his own since 2010. Whilst I understand the latest soundbite re: how the business has changed, I definitely nonetheless think that if P himself had felt he had created something of serious artistic value and credibility, he would do as he has always done and got that music out to the public with a quickness of spirit. Regardless about woes to do with “the industry“, Prince has always ditched it, and money, to get his newest studio music out, especially if he genuinely feels like raving about it. Something is up. It sounds to me like Prince is quite possibly a little lost. There is little to no other explanation, surely?

Maybe Prince is human and possibly taking his time pondering the universe, goals, direction and life. Sometimes we all need a little "space" to reflect and grow. Kudos to him for not rushing into anything and taking his time to do whatever it is he needs to do.

Maybe he needs some time to rest as well. *

nope he has no pressure now since he is free
he can keep stuff, throw it in the vault, sell it or give it away for free now with no worries
whatever he wants to do he can do
he must be having the time of his life right now!

There are plenty of other explanations, all of which have been discussed ad nasueum.
I'm starting to get desperate for he new album myself, if only so these kinds of threads will stop!

He would often talk about how Mr. Brown would release records...single after single after single...songs would get rleased as they got made. He seems to be going that route...in the wrong way... Someone who is very much used to the albumn tour format trying out the single releasees only and he seems a bit uncomfortable doing it...like he's holding back from dropping an album or doing what he's used to to follow a game plan of single releases only. Or maybe he's just selling the non-album contenders that get finished in an effort to finance the production of the record he's still putting together. So that the album finances itself without ever cracking his wallet.

Insecure? I don't think so. My theory is that he is playing around and has been a bit all over the place. The last two albums already sounded a bit thrown together and not like a coherent album. He is also being distracted or mentoring (depending on one's viewpoint) by music artists he likes and wants to support and people he meets along the way such as video artists, photographers, choreographers etc. He has two new bands going (3EG and the NPG as a hornz/choir configuration). He needed to revamp his band last year because key people became unavailable such as John Blackwell. He has written lots of music but it's not a coherent concept yet so he keeps writing, recording and rehearsing until he feels it all fits together. In the meantime he plays around with the internet, does some shows to tighten up the bands and earn some money to pay for their salaries and drops a few songs and hints to keep interest going. I hope he hasn't pushed himself into a corner with all the hype and ongoing teasing for 2013. And that he continues to release music and livestreams after an album or albums drop. ...every night another symphony...

Everytime Prince "rushes" a new release then there are posts about him needing to take his time and make a "killer" CD or "the album I know he has in him" from orgers. Well... be careful what you wish for beccause you just might get it. Now it seems Prince is obviously in no rush to release anything at this point simply to appease fan demand(of an album per year). When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

For better or worse, the music industry has changed and I think P, who has always prided himself on being one step ahead may be realising he's a few steps behind. The thing is, up until recently the industry was the leader, now the audiences are thanks to this electric inter web thingy. Making an album is one thing, working out the best way and time to release it for maximize impact (I.e. Profit) is another. Truth is, and I say this as an insider, no one in the music industry really has a handle on that aspect. The best thing to do is make music from the soul and put it out and hope for the best, which may not be profitable. In Ps case I'm sure it would at least pay the bills break even. Thankfully, the one thing about the industry that the internet can't change is live music and that's where savvy artists are making their living. The problem arises when live performance isn't the artists chosen palette. Remember the Beatles were a studio band for the latter part of their careers. If they tried that these days, they'd be in trouble.
In summary, Prince, release your album and continue touring on the hits and you'll be just fine. You already have enough money to live out your days. [Edited 10/10/13 9:53am] may display symptoms of sarcasm

Yes...kudos to him. | |

I don't think that is what the gap is about no. But every time I hear/read him say "I think album now is my best", or something similar, I think "Prince..... come on now, Priiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiincaaaahhhhh!...... Who you tryin' to kid, us or yourself?!"

Prince likes the buzz around a new release, but that buzz quickly fizzles out not long after. I think he's releasing singles now to maintain that "high" for an extended period of time, instead of releasing an entire album and having it fizzle all at once.

Once a leader and now just a follower The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

There are two things Prince shouldn't be allowed to do: rush release some crap he has laying around because he's having cashflow problems, or infinitely tinker on an album because he'll kill it dead (and he'll be sick and tired of it by the time it gets released).
All the delays WRT the 3EG record and whatever other shit he's cooking up just indicates one thing to me: dude is really desperate for a hit and at the same time unsure about his output because clearly what's been happening this year is not going to plan.
The club tour where they had to slash ticket prices in half and then still needed to give vast amounts away for free put a serious damper on his expectations for that project.
Then his ventures into social media were embarrassing when it comes to the numbers, and of course he put a torpedo in that effort by going after one fan because he was too enthusiastic (and they kinda had a point, which they then decided to make in absolutely the worst way possible), while going out of his way to please another fan for no apparent reason.
He launched numerous websites that then got abandoned even sooner, and seemed to have absolutely no actual plan. It was just random stuff: a couple of uninspired single releases that showed little cohesion, a video or two,... Then some of it pops up on iTunes. Then there are streams at some idiotic hours.
It is telling how he hides behind other people: in 3rd Eye Girl he hides behind the women, in the new NPG he hides behind a big band. He doesn't appear in his new video.
Prince clearly thought this was going to be his big big return -- and then it didn't happen. So he started throwing things at the wall, just to see if it would stick. Hence the above. And nothing really did.
But there's this new record contract. Which comes with obligations. And my guess is that he's already spent some of that money. And that some of those Kobalt folks are getting impatient and not putting up with his shit. © Bart Van Hemelen

Except there is no buzz now. Look at the viewing figures of his YouTube videos, the amount of followers on Facebook, Twitter etc. I bet they're looking at those numbers at Kobalt and wondering what they've invested millions in. © Bart Van Hemelen

Once again; Prince should let someone (co) produce him!Listen 2 his 30 seconds with Janelle...fresh!!!If U take a loo at the charts, HE could score because a lot off Princely music is on the radio these days; Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars.... Love4oneanother

...narrowing down the options slightly there! Any other things Prince shouldn't be allowed to do - poo or get off the pan perhaps?

Well, at least he is getting some press and in three days more than 550 000 views on vevo... It is nothing against britney, lady gaga or many others, but on the other side...they have like 200 millions views, but don`t sell that much:) The delay is because Prince wants a high chart position and much attention..he can`t get it in the next weeks where the big selling acts release their stuff... So the albums will probably come out early next year... Bart, maybe you should show Prince how it is getting done the right way...because you seem to be a insider on what it`s the best for Prince....

Chris Rock did an HBO special where he sat down with 3 other big comedians to discuss the art of comedy. He mentioned that Prince would put out an album and he waited in baited breath for it. These days his albums don't garner the same reactions because they are just not as good.
I tend to blame lazyness on his part and the fact that religion makes you less creative. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I'm glad he's taking his time. I would be suspicious if he immediately would lover everything he does and not question or ponder about anything. 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Arguably, the majority of art throughout history has been insprired by religion! Some of Prince's best work (and others - Marvin Gaye springs to mind) would appear to me to have been inspired by the conflict between the spiritual and profane. Prince's dogmatic adherence to JW may be impacting on his work but I don't think you can make a general statement that "religion makes you less creative" ....and this is coming from an aetheist!

He needs a distributor. Plain and simple. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

He has one (Kobalt). He has a contract that will allow for protegee work as well. Kobalt will distribute and market for Prince. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment
