The Kid's dad in Purple Rain/Graffiti Bridge Did he die in Purple Rain? I was always uder the impression that he survivied the gunshot wound and that the movie had a "happy" ending. But watching Graffiti Bridge recently, I wondered - the kid's dad is now dead (mom is in a nursing home) and the kid wites him letters asking, "why did you leave us?" as if he chose to die. So, the question is, did he actually die in Purple Rain, or did he survive that episode and took his own life later?
I know, I am crazy for trying to make logical sense of a Prince narrative (most especially Graffiti Bridge ) but hey, I really wanna know. What do you all think? Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

I've wondered that too. He's defintely alive the last time we see him in Purple Rain, but a gunshot to the head probably reduces your lifespan a bit, huh? Or maybe he tried again and was successful?

The dad was supposed to die in the original ending of Purple Rain. The Warner execs object and Magnoli and Prince had to alter it and make it a happy ending. Since GB is Prince's own movie, he answers to noone and he could take the matter to his own hands and rewrite history to his liking i.e. the dad should be dead. Maybe that's why GB is depressing to watch. Is everybody wet?

It's really a miracle the dad survived that close-range self-inflicted head shot. [Edited 8/20/13 12:43pm] Is everybody wet?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

* * I don't find GB to be depressing at all. Quite the contrary.

I watch it one way for the music scenes, aka videos(they're alright - depending on the song), and...then to laugh my butt off. When the jeep comes out of no where and mows Aura(Ingrid Chavez' character) over - and within seconds Prince and crew all go into mourning. Huh? Is she dead? Where's the ambulance, doctors, EMT's? I actually recently watched GB for the first time. I avoided it all these years because I thought it would be awful, but I actually ended up enjoying it. I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but I saw it as a live-action comic book or live-action cartoon and liked it in that way.

We are supposed to let GB die a slow death. Shh. All you others say Hell Yea!!

* Actually, it was kinda sad when Larry Graham ran her over with the jeep. * I was like, OMG, what's gonna happen next? Did she survive? *

I always pictured the father getting a lot better but at the last minute Prince decided to pull the plug on the project. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

The ambulance did come in a split second and swooped Aura up quickly! . Eye thought that part was funny 2. Eye was like the ambulance must of been sitting right there all along. Eye guess Prince didn't have much time to edit it longer. Prince sure likes to kill peeps off in his movies. He even killed himself off in UTCM with a quickness . Like they said at the The Prince Panel Discussion With Touré, L.A. Reid & Susannah Melvoin. Prince has a fascination with death. He didn't believe life stops after death.
Eye'm glad Warners made them change the script in Purple Rain. It would have been too tragic a dark ending. But it didn't mean his father still didn't die later.. [Edited 8/21/13 7:23am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Maybe the ambulance was sitting right there because the Kid knew Larry was going to try and run her over.

Friends don't let "friends" run over their friends. It's always best to take away the key (rather than have an ambulance waiting). * Maybe that's the moral of the story? Just musing. *

In GB,we learn that his father is dead and his mom is in a nursing home that sounds like a storyline you'd see on a nighttime soap opera...lol....

Well it was said that if it was up to Prince more people would have died in PR. So, imo, with noone having any creative input in GB but Prince that he got the ending that he wanted for PR.
The comment is on Disk Two of the PR Anniversity DVD.

I think that Grafitti Bridge is actually Part 3, with Under The Cherry Moon being Part 2. What they don't show you is in between Purple Rain and UTCM, The Kid moves to France and goes under a fake name, Christopher Tracy. He is then shot and killed at the end of UTCM. Grafitti Bridge all takes place in the afterworld, and he's talking to his father, who is still alive, recovering from the gunshot wound in Purple Rain. In Grafitti Bridge, Prince's character (and all the other characters) are actually dead... like in a popular TV show whose name I won't say so as to not give away any spoilers.
