Don't get me wrong...This was Prince's most hip-hop-ish jam music to date in 1987. I love it. And I like the 12" version of "7 Minutes Mo Quake" but did or does it succeed as a dancefloor anthem?

"Housequake" was really a club jam. It was mostly played in nightclubs and at house parties and because the song wasn't released as a sing, so the reach of the song was limited mostly to Black radio. I like listening to it, but I don't do Kid N Play dance routines when I hear it, if that's what you're asking when you say "jam out".

Back in '87-'88 I'd hear it on the radio, and at clubs. A DJ spun it at a party in '95 and it was great!

Housequake is a 10/10 song.

What's this "succeed as a hit" bs? Guess you don't know about the 'quake. When a song is as good and funky as "Housequake" it doesn't need radio/charts, etc. It's too bad for it.

Let's not forget, Prince comes from (grew up in) an era where albums were more important than just singles. Back in the day, a musicians best songs from an album often weren't on the radio. Housequake fits that mould.

i do. I love Housequake to death. If SOTT was just an EP of the first four songs alone, it would still be a great release.

I should have been more clear. I didn't mean as a radio hit. I realize it wasn't a single. I mean does it really move people still? It was cool back in the day but does it still hold up as a song that can move the floor? I guess I need to hear it remastered or on vinyl because listening to the CD last night I wasn't impressed with it anymore.

93.1 in Cleveland plays it a lot as one of their "Throwback Jams", and damn if it doesn't sound incredible on the radio, 25 years later.

yeah...i really get into this old funk jam. i dig the various styles/versions that he plays, especially the long and concert versions. a true funk classic!

The only connection that "Housequake" has to hip hop is that hip hop got its start sampling James Brown and other funk and soul legends as "Housequake" is a straight funk classic and homage to James Brown. Further, the "house" in "Housequake" isn't about house music but more in reference to old school house parties.

But, to answer the question, I still love the studio and live version from the SOTT film, and I love the version played this year at the Dakota Club! So, yes, I'm still quaking!

I love it, but I usually only listen to it when I jam to the whole SOTT part 1.
