"We March" appreciation

Ok, without generalizing it seems like "political Prince" is not well liked, at least not at The Org. But while people may be at varying levels of enlightenment/acceptance with the truths he typically speaks in such songs, they typically aren't well structured/produced songs (Race, Dear Mr. Man, Family Name, etc) which makes it easy to discount political Prince. But i REALLY like We March. I think the production, lyrics, and arrangement come together nicely. I know TGE gets mad love here for Dolphin, the title track, EM, TMBGITW, and others, but We March is a fave for me from this album!

Agreed. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i don't hate it, but it's perhaps the weakest song on The Gold Experience.

i'd have much prefered to have "acknowledge me" on there instead, now

that's a great tune.

No problems with the lyrics for me, but I dislike the tune. I agree that it's the weakest song on the album, and, knowing all the songs that were left off it, I find it a shame that "We March" was finally included.

Love the 'warhooo', don't care that much for the song.

Was dated before it was even recorded.

One of my favorite songs from TGE. I love the music, the creative lyrics, and the message! I wish he would have kept "Uncle Sam" and "Paris 1798430" for himself and included them on TGE as well.

Always liked this track. I do think it only got included on the Gold Experience because Nona Gaye is on it though.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

That may be true, but he also gave it to the organizers of the Million Man March to use so it may have also made the album because it was one of those tunes that was expressing what he was feeling or thinking at the moment that he wanted to get to the public.

goes to show u how diverse opinions are. Acknowledge Me sucks monkey balls IMO, i've never even made it thru to the end of the song. It and P Control (although i love its message) are the weakest tracks to me on TGE

Couldnt' disagree more. "We March" is one of Prince's best songs with a socio-political message. People can disagree with the message, but it certainly sounds more impassioned than "Ronnie Talk To Russia" and songs of that ilk. Issues like misogny, gentrification, reparations and race relations are heavy topics for any artist to tackle and in 4 minutes, sings about those topics very convingly.

Musically, Prince, Nona Gaye and Sonny T singing their lyric and harmony parts during the pre-chorus with the power chords in the background was a nice touch. Made the message that much more urgent. In a decade where Prince was embattled with the music industry, the music and lyrics reflect that period very well.

I heard the live version before the studio version, and that might be why I like it more than some others here. It was the first song of the set, and Prince came out on the conveyor belt, posed with the one-eyed bass in all of it's furry guitar-strapped glory, with some cheek sucking that might've crushed a lesser man's cheekbones. That visual is burned into my brain, and I think of it every time We March starts.

When the studio version came out, I was surprised by how dated it sounded. It seemed very 80s at the time, which wasn't a good thing in '95. The sunny vibe of it eventually won me over as I got more into the album. I'm curious as to what people hate about it. Is it the clunky lyrics? The general corniness?

thanks bashraka! like i alluded in the OP, i think the content is offputting to many perhaps because they can't relate, and the fact the disdain is rarely discussed in MUSICAL descriptions and simply said to be "crap" doesn't shed any light. its not LAZY production by any means. more layered, vast, and melodic than most of the stuff that would fall in this category

First "Arms of orion", now this one. How come so many Prince fans feel the need to appreciate crappy songs!?

It's probably my least favorite song on TGE but I like it alright. Thing is that b4 havin that one I'd heard the live version (I think from Berlin 1994?) and, despite the TERRIBLE sound quality I was in love with the synths arrangements of this version (it was poppier IIRC) and there4 I was disappointed by the studio version. Maybe the original, unreleased, mix was closer to the live take.

Anyway I've always thought that Love Sign shoulda been there instead of We March: it's also a political statement, it's better (IMHO) and more catchy, it had had a lot of airplay on TV in 94 and from what I could see from the people around me back then it was popular with non-Prince fans. But anyway if we start going that way I'm so sad about so many TGE outtakes being outtakes that it's pointless. I love the album as it is anyway.

I don't know, maybe I could enjoy the song more had it a more melodic chorus.

-------

In general, it's not that bad, but I can't help thinking in "Interactive", "Acknowledge Me" and "Days Of Wild". Easily among the best Prince stuff of the 90's, and he chose "We March" and "319"...
