It seems that Prince is hip at the moment.


Not just among hipsters, but somehow, suddenly, people pick up on Prince again.

Does anybody else notice that too?

Very cool article, a lot of stuff in there that I didn't know. You get the sense that the interviewer, whilst being far from starstruck, could tell Prince was destined for greatness.

And it explains why he became more carefull with his money.

He gave it away and he only owned the coat he was wearing at that moment.

I really love this interview.

Especially, because the important things still are the same.

And I also loved his remark of " hang around in my head" .

I remember reading quotes from that interview during my childhood fandom, but never found the whole thing. I think it's interesting he was already threatening retirement in 1981, and continued to throughout his career. I wonder what specifically made him want to retire back in 1981?

if you read between the lines, i think what he means is that he's sick of travelling

and doing interviews and doing shows to promote his albums.

he does mention being all alone and recording more music, so i think he has this

thing of fighting against what others are doing and what others say he should.

didn't joni already stop touring at that time? he was a fan, obviously and seems

to have taken a few pointers from her way of doing things.

later on his retirements were also never 'real' in that he usually retired personas

instead of the core entitiy of "prince". well, until he actually killed off prince

that kind of mindset seems to allow him to change gears and go into new directions

or to simply create a line between what was and what will be.

it's kind of telling that he hasn't threatened retirement since he got to be his own

agent in all affairs.

Interviewer clearly did not know how to feel about Prince.

But he did sense Prince was different and interesting.

And very often negativity is confused with being intelligent and critical.

Especially journalists don't know the difference. I like music journalists who choose to be positive, constructive or silent. So, followers of a journalist like that, know that if he does not comment or report about a concert or musician, he didn't like it.

Also, I'm amused that Prince flew from MPLS to NYC for that interview. It's been a very long time since he did that sort of thing! More likely the interviewer would be doing the travelling, then consider himself lucky if he actually got to do an interview.
