The root harmonies are simple, yet the layers of guitars and keyboards and horns create completely different, strange and beautiful harmonies on top.

Add to that the tastefully chosen low-frequency "rumble" of the drums (mainly the toms), which however doesn't interfear too much with the bass, and you've got a wonderful production.

I'm very happy he had the trust in a song to take the time and make something unique and tasteful out of it, instead of putting down the harmonies and adding a sung melody with lyrics over it.

I'm really, really impressed!

i'm guessing this was recorded around the time he was working with andy allo?

it has that slightly off kilter thing about it and it's a bit reminiscent of his 1970s

songs. they did some good stuff together and she seems to have inspired him

to start thinking a bit less formulaic about his songwriting again. good stuff. i'm

liking this more and more with each listen.

Yes, Isten. If I Was Your King and Yellow Gold were great little organic adventures by Prince and the band, with the kind of subtle and fluid musical deviations of Groovy Potential.

It's been at least an hour since I paid for the track and still waiting for the download link email. Did anyone else have to wait this long?

It's been over 12 hours for me. Still waiting on the download email. No response from the "support" email either. I did get the account confirmation email. And, yes, I've checked spam, not there either.

If I don't have it when I get off work tomorrow I'm contacting paypal and canceling the order.

confused

I got mine finally a couple hours later after this post. Not sure why it took so long as previous songs the download showed up immediately after purchase. Hope you finally got yours.

As for the song, its simply ok. I HATE autotune with a passion...but its sorta bareable here. I do like the horns. Its ok filler for my 2013 playlist.

So funny, because you're right, it does sound like a song, that could have been on Andy's album, but I do feel the 70s vibe you're talking about. I feel like Barry White's orchestra is going to come out swinging somewhere in the song. Then close to the end, with the instrumental part and the horns, I feel the music vibe of TSOP, Isaac Hayes Orchestra, and Van McCoy.

Feel like this could have been a song on the 'For You' album as well, because of that 70s vibe.

I love it. Super smooth loungy jazz a l'Prince with a super breakdown and build up.

Sensual track with bits of everything, simple but effective lyrics and the end and bass is just too sexy. biggrin

Love It this.

This song is a close relative of Love 2 The 9's, maybe even better.

an album with this Big City and The breakdown could be pretty amazing.

Hope it gets pushed out to radio.

I'm surprised to see a lot of you are underwhelmed. I think it's great. It's the first song I've heard in a while that I wanted to immediately play again. The lyrics are pretty basic, but they fit for such a light and "groovy" song.

On headphones, there's a part of it that always makes me think my phone is ringing. smile

Let's just put it this way -

right before hearing this track I was listening to Parliament.

Well, depending on what Parliament--yeah, that could definitely make a difference.

I heard it after not hearing anything for a few hours. Clean palate--sounded fine.

Okay, now I've heard the whole song. I'm not really excited about this. It's a nice breezy outtake, but that's about it. His vocals sound rough.

The Org must be getting desperate, because this is the same Org that dissed 'Act Of God' (from 20ten) and the brilliant 'Lotusflow3r' album and now is praising this.

I think that Prince is releasing songs that are not intended for release in any other form.

Songs like 'Rock & Roll Love Affair', 'Screwdriver', 'Big City' and 'FixUrLifeUp' deserve to be on an album... not so sure about this.

There are elements that I like... the instrumental breakdown toward the end, and the interplay between the guitar and horns...

Some good songs have sprung forth from this 3rd Eye Girl period, but this is one of the best imo. I'm happy.

BTW, I liked Boyfriend, Same Page, Breakfast and FixUrLifeUp as well.
