And I also think it's ridiculous that the result of this is, that black and white people have to go to different hairdressers.

Ok. I've already not been very productive today.

And when I think about this subject, I get upset. And that is not good, because I should try to get some sleep and not wind myself up over something.

Still think it's wrong, though. hmph!

This is getting off topic. There is too wide of a cultural divide on this matter, to go into great detail on a Prince pic thread.

Look at how many people can't even believe that it's Prince's hair and call it a wig? As if an older black man can't have hair, when Dr. Cornel West has a head full of natural hair, so does Don King. Even James Brown before his death had a head full of hair. Every time there is a hair thread here, there are assumptions on all black people using chemicals to straighten and more. What you may write as "no kidding", really isn't common knowledge after all.

Yes you are right.

And allthough it's off topic, I am interested in issues related to black people hair structure and styles.

A few months ago, I wanted to start a legal case about discrimination of [Snip - luv4u] people by the hairdressers school in Holland.

However, my complaint was denied because I was white and not directly involved.

(now, that is discrimination right there. As a white girl, I can't start a legal case over discrimination of [Snip - luv4u] people!)

I still think it's unjust that the schools only teach hairdressing techniques for white peoples hair. And not for people from African or Asian heritage. And the coloured students therefore have a more difficult job to get the hairdresser diploma than their white counterpart.

On the other hand, I'm also glad, because I don't need another court case in my life right now.

Now that I'm thinking about it again, I will try to find somebody else to make the complaint. A [Snip - luv4u] hairdresser student. Because I still think it's injust.

O the issues with the subject of hair. If only we would just tie it up in a nice scarf as they do in some cultures, it wouldn't even be an issue. But since we Westeners love to floss & make spectacles of ourselves, we just have to deal. A part of your post caught my attention though, The part "the [Snip - luv4u] students therefore...... My question is how is it they are having a more difficult time....? Are they not learning all that the others are learning? This is in Holland? So I'm guessing there aren't many [Snip - luv4u] hair schools there? I think it is good as a hairdresser to know how to do all types of hair. Kudos to you for fighting an injustice.

The hairdresser schools are private schools.

And they teach techniques for white people's hair.

However, techniques for [Snip - luv4u] people hair, is different. But not on the curiculum.
Handling crispy hair, or asian hair is not tought.

Eventhough a lot of Dutch people are not used to the idea that there are a lot of non-white Dutch people, the reality is different. However, there is not one hairdresser school that teaches non-white hair techniques.

In order to do the exams, the pupils have to bring hair models. A woman in my neigbourhood asked me to be a model. She had trouble finding white models, which makes sense, because her network and family is black.

This woman did not pass that year, because she did not bring models every time she had to.

She did a perm on my hair and because I have short hair, she still had time to also colour my hair. Which also was on her curriculum. She was not allowed to do the colouring and was told she just did not pass the exam.

This was a problem for a lot of the non-white students. They just can't find white people as exam and practice models, as easy as their white counter students.

Also, they have to learn techniques on hair that is alien to them.

And that was my point, for non-white people it is harder to find models and therefore to pass the exams.

If the techniques for handling non-white people's hair. would also be part of the curriculum, chances would be equeal. Because for the white students it's harder to find negro and Asian models for exams and to practice techniques. And then the white students have to learn techniques for hair that is structured different from what they know.

I migth motivate the woman who did not pass, to start a complaint against the school.

She's black, and was directly affected, so she can start a legal case about it.

Btw, the scarf comes from the idea that women have to protect themselves from aggressive sexual attacks by males. I think men should be able to inhibit themselves and not rape women. And not decide for women what to dress or do with their hair. But that is a whole different discussion. I'm very happy that I can have short hair without being shunned by a social community. I prefer being free to express myself and dress myself in freedom.

I'm Italian and ignorant, as most black people here are simply "africans" for us (since they actually come from there, and often still have their own family and kids in Senegal or Nigeria or whatever). Is "black" the only correct definition? You can read the term "man of colour" (which I find strange, since we all have a skin colour... ?) in newspapers and people still uses it, is it offensive?

My daughter's kindergarten boyfriend, who is from Senegal, defined himself and his connationals "brown" people lol When I asked him if I could come to Senegal's school with him (since he said it is wonderful and more free than here) he told me "No, it's only for Browns"!!

Djj, I think your fight is important, and even if it is discrimination that you have to find a black person to complain, it may be important for that woman to stand for her rights, too. She was the one who was damaged after all.

Back on topic: I like the pic, and I agree that he doesn't need photoshop (or cheek sucking), in fact live pics look so better than studio ones lately. And I like the fro, I like natural stuff. Some grey in it woudn't look bad either but that may just be me wink

Nursev - I think DJJ is not Native-English speaking nor American, and did not mean any offense by the word.

My my, how did this thread get to this point?

As I said before, let's just applaud the fact that his face is pretty much the same as it was 30 years ago, I.e., no nose reductions, chin implants, cheek implants, lip reductions, skin bleaching, etc. etc. Whether he looks older or not, wearing makeup or not, whatever hairdo - his face is still natural!

wink

That's why I love the live shots when you see him all natural ... wrinkles are fine, make him even more attractive because he is more mature and masculine. And while I don't really care for the afro, I am getting used to it and I do like the fact he has gone back to natural. He looks good. heart
