Because it's bigger than protecting a copyright....Don't fall for that...That's just a shield....The 3EG folks actually beefed with Serpan for getting the word out about the live streams....Again, we all know P can be an ass....And at times fans get too wrapped up and sensitive about the man and his business....

But this is more about good ol' fashioned respect....

And before u go the whole "you guys are fanatic route" I'm usually the one pointing out the petty, bullshit fake fans that troll this site on the daily with their endless posts about how Prince is no longer bringing it...And at the same time I have it out with delusional STANS who get mad when u call P short...But in this case? Fuck Prince on this one....

[Edited 7/27/13 15:03pm]

I'm not even gonna go "you guys are fanatics" route, because most of the time, Prince's fans' levels don't even bother me. It is only about two people here who truly think Prince can do no wrong and even I think that dude is lying to try to get close to Prince.

Your post is the most surprising because you are usually calling people on their BS. I never see you calling Prince on his.

When P fucks with the fans, I ALWAYS call him out on his bullshit...

just because I don't get my pitchfork out because I want Prince to do a different set-list everytime I see him does not mean I know what true wackness or disrespect is...

Fans should learn the difference between true asshole behavior (3EG's behavior against Serpan), and the random shit P has done to some of the fans over the years and the tired yelping that happens on this site....

I have a problem with you guys using the words "bullying". Does ti really rise to that level or are you guys just emotional to the point wthere this is being blown out of proportion?

This is not the point where u want to take up for P and his folks...Nor is it the time to act like u r above it all....It was a shitty thing Prince's people did....And yeah...it was bullying....Again, we all know some fans have been crying wolf on this site, boo-hooing over dumb shit and making P out to be the devil himself who owes them their first child...

But this time? Nah...P and his team deserve to be called out for what it is...

Actually I'm not. If you've seen any of my posts in this forum, then you know I call BS when I see it. And, yes. I am above it all. Prince and crew can get called on their BS without some of the things I've seen posted on here.

Yes....we should still be shocked.....because this is different than P sending a C&D letter out to someone bootlegging his music...

It's all about common respect....And P and his people need to be clowned for his...Big time....

It was not bullying. It was rather condescending, at best short-sighted and ill-considered, at worst ungrateful and petty.

Serge is a grown man, yes a very enthusiastic fan who I'm sure feels rather deflated, disappointed, and maybe a little bitter right now but he is an intelligent person. I'd be very surprised if he felt bullied. His resigned responses immediately after both in the chat and on Twitter do not seem to suggest that anyway.

Accusations of bullying for every disagreement on the Internet really are unnecessary.

I have been a hardcore 'fan' since i was a kid ('86) i'm often glad i did not go online until jan '09.

I don't consider myself a 'purple kool aid drinker' or a 'hater', i have always thought P is an amazingly talented man but like all of us has a higher & lower self.

I make a point to not involve myself in any form of online negativity as there is more than enough of it in the 'real world'.

This tho has irritated me enough to post, & i don't even follow serpan/funkenberry/fb/twitter ect.

"We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

While I agree that one should never be rude or disrespectful to another, in some cases it seems that fans have an exaggerated or delusional notion of their relationship with or role in the career of their favorite artist. The "role" or "place" of a fan is to receive art and to decide if one likes or dislikes the art. The amount of art that one likes and the degree to which one likes the art determines if one is a fan and to what level is one a fan. However, in some cases, people become so enamored with an artist that they want to be more than just fans or they begin to exaggerate what it means to be a fan to feel a part of the artist's work or life. However, if an artist has made it clear, like Prince has, that he isn't interested in fans who think they need to help him promote something or "keep his legacy alive" by posting his work on YouTube or other sites, then one should either respect Prince’s wishes regarding his "copyrighted" material or find another artist to worship...err I mean enjoy.

*

At this point, most of us know who and what Prince is and what type of relationship he wants with his fans. But, many of us see the types of relationships that other artists have with their fans and desire a similar type of relationship with Prince. Yet, Prince is not those other artists, and he has made it clear from day one that he is not those other artists. So, if Prince has made it clear that he doesn't want his fans posting his work to various sites for any reason, why would one be surprised by a negative response from Prince when a fan does something that Prince has made clear he doesn't want done? Only a fool would be surprised or angered by Prince's reaction. The logical thing would be to say "my bad," and stop doing it. Even as a person with bootlegs, do I think it would be wise for me to approach Prince and say, "Dude, I love the bootlegs of the Dakota show and the ten LOL shows that I have"? It would be even more foolish if I actually expected Prince to be happy about it.

*

Of course, some will ask, then why am I a member of Prince.org and earlier of Housequake.com and even earlier Controversy and Uptown? I'm a member of Prince.org and was a member of the others because it is the easiest way to get Prince information. Yes, I engage in discourse about the art, but my primary reason for being here is to learn about the latest album, appearance, or tour. (So, NPG Music Club was cool to me for the access to music. I never chatted on there because all I want is music--audio and video.) The rest (especially chatting online with other fans) is just extra to me, and, in many cases, that extra is a negative waste of time, but there are also several on this site who do offer objective insight about Prince's art regardless of whether or not I agree with their position. And while Serpan seems to be interested in "promoting" Prince, he was doing so in ways that seems to infringe on what Prince views as welcomed. Yes, Prince could have sent him a private letter, but it seems that Prince views Serpan's actions not as an isolated incident but as one aspect of how many fans seem, again, to exaggerate their role or place in Prince's career.

*

I think that Housequake is second only to Controversy as a great place for Prince fans to discuss their admiration for Prince’s work. (If you’re counting, then, yes, that means I have Prince.org listed as third. Yet, I must say that the moderators of both Housequake and Prince.org did/do a wonderful job!) But, many of us did abuse Housequake by posting unauthorized audio and video when the site had been asked not to do so. Prince probably could have handled the situation better, but many (and I’m not including the moderators in this group) kept ignoring the request and became adversarial to the requests to stop. A relationship is about defining what each party wants, defining the boundaries of those desires, and then determining if each party can be happy with those terms. Clearly, many of you are not happy with the terms and relationship Prince desires to maintain with his "fans" so it seems that maybe instead of constantly bitching and whining about it y’all should just find another artist who desires to have the type of relationship with fans that you desire to have with an artist. All I want is access to the music, and few other artists have done as much this year as Prince has as giving us access to the music. One may not like the music to which one has been given access, but your ass has been given access.

*

Let me be clear; I don't know Serpan as well as many of you, obviously, so my comments are not about Serpan but about what I see as many fans having an exaggerated or delusional perception of what it means to be a fan. All I want to do is receive art from an artist, enjoy that art in my home and car, during live shows, and, in some cases, have informative discussions with others who also enjoy that work. But, it seems that I have a much more defined line drawn in the sand of where "fandom" ends and infringement begins. Ultimately, Prince has said to his fans over the years: "I don't want your help promoting my work." This has been made clear to us. We either accept it and continue to enjoy the art that we get, or we find other artists to worship...err I mean enjoy who want us to be more involved in promoting their work. Since I'm too lazy to promote anybody else's work than mine, I'll just stick to enjoying Prince's work since I still do.

Just observe how electric and dynamic this performance is; there is no other way of describing it, but the man centre stage was in "the zone" and the people around him were in that zone, too. Just look at the way he interracts with Wendy towards the end and the way Eric goes nuts on his sax and the way Prince himself comes across as so genuinely and naturally proud of what he and they were creating TOGETHER. The situation with Wendy's sister must have hurt him. We know so many of those songs were inspired by her. We know he soon disbanded The Revolution. And we know he soon went into a dark place therafter. But what on Earth has happened to that man? And what on Earth has happened to those people surrounding him? And, finally, what on Earth has happened to us?

How is it bullying?

When folks jump on you beyond understandable reasons...And they do so in a flurry of comments....And it becomes less about the music and more about control, then yes...It's bullying....

Here's the difference:

P getting his lawyers to take down recorded, copyrighted material= not bullying...

P and his people forcing a fan to stop posting/tweeting about live streams (again...think about that for a second....)= bullying...

I get it...There's a lot of bullshit that goes on on this site...There's a lot of boy who cried wolf complaining that has turned the Org into a bitchy, sad place...

But u should know the difference between fans just making petty, bullshit posts and fans that have legit issues with Prince and his team....

In this case, we are at the latter.....

Is anyone else utterly shocked by the atrocious grammar from the 'representative'? It reads as if it was written by a 15 year old girl. How on earth did this person manage to get a job in Prince's camp with such an appaling standard of written communication, and then be given the responsibilty of dealing with the public on behalf of 3rdEyeGirl! I expect a much higher standard from an act as big as Prince. shake

Furthermore, this representative appears to say one thing (see bolded above) and then another thing in direct contradiction, which suggests, at best, short-term memory loss and, at worst, an underhand dishonesty. Either way, it would be difficult for this representative to come across as any more unprofessional and, ultimately, this type of amateur operation reflects poorly on Prince. Protect copyright by all means, but use a professional PR and Legal team in co-ordinated efforts with one another. Do NOT use the equivalent of what comes across as a glorified teenage girl working the till behind a shop counter, especially if she is chewing gum in front of the public. I mean, surely this isn't rocket science?

Well that snippet of conversation is an eye opener. Serpan acted like a mature and kind person throughout. The other "person" whoever that maybe (I think we all know) acted like a horrible passive aggressive prick.

There have been some low points for the last 10 years of prince fandom, but this is the worst. It's just so mean spirited and juvenile.

Definition of respect - Serpan's behaviour in respect to 3EG impeccable. He immediately responded to the requests and corrected what were considered the pain points from 3EG. On the other side, Wow! What an owngoal, seriously Prince's organisation couldn't handle this in a much more professional manner. Why are we even talking about this, someone either had a head explosion, or they still "roll like dat"? (cue Gangster Glam video)

They "humiliate" a guy that does a better job at the "right price" keeping Prince's fanbase informed on social media than the people on the payroll at Paisley Park. He's just a fan just like the rest of us, he doesn't think he's Prince PR department and genuinely does what he does to help other fans. I am thankful for all the "work" you have done Serpan and strongly urge you to continue your tweeting, because in the real world "time is not a trick". Contrary to what has been written he is not banned from anywhere, just the standard cant use copyrighted material which is fair enough.

I will add we as fans should not to be choosing sides, we should all be happy that there is more than one outlet to get Prince news. Whether that is Jester or Dr Funkenberry or Serpan, it is unneccesary to attack them for doing this for us . There certainly is no need for the outlandish long bow being drawn on Jester and childish slights on Dr Funkenberry.

As for the title of this thread @3rdeyegirl you know the twitter account.

Another winner here; plus, your signature is rather apt.

I am a 40 year old fan who loves purple music & has seen the man live 70 times over the years including the recent 3 Montreux shows + aftershow. I'd like 2 say THANKYOU VERY MUCH 2 Serpan 4 his twitter feed as he has kept me very well informed. The way P releases information & music through multiple obscure channels is confusing & embarrassing 4 an artist of his stature. I always turn 2 Serpan several times daily 2 find out what the time is!! The way a representative of 3EG has treated Serpan is disgusting & I am very angry & dissappointed about it. Prince employs amateurish wankers!!!

I've just been reading a little about how livestream operates and the different price plans they have in place for account holders.

Obviously the 3rdeyegirl account is not a free one as there are no ads around the page or over the top of the videos?

Different tiers of payment are available and it looks like if you go over your allowance (in terms of viewer hours/or users) you get a larger monthly bill than you were perhaps expecting.

You see where I'm going with this I'm sure. So for goodness sake don't promote it, Prince has bills to pay people! lol

Just a theory but it made me wonder. That "we prefer a small gathering" line is still sticking right in my gullet. wink

EDIT: Nah, I've read some other more up to date pricing articles now and it looks like livestream have a $333/$399 per month plan which does not punish the account holder for success in quite the way I was alluding to. I was way off it seems. Probably just a throwaway comment from 3EG. I'll get off it now.

SirLancelot

I was about to turn off my computer last night (this morning) when I noticed the 3EG posts, so I caught the whole exchange live. I get the feeling (and I could be wrong) that this has been going on for a while behind the scenes. Serpan posted some Montreux pics on here the other day and then, poof, they were gone. The "girlfriend" thread that included a pic from his Twitter page also disappeared. To be honest, I think that some of the things that Serpan has posted go beyond the music into a whole other realm, and he really should credit every source, but I do appreciate that he has taken the time out to keep people informed and has also highlighted band members and their various musical endeavours. 3EG's passive-aggressive public attack was not at all pleasant to watch. What surprised me was the tone of authority in which they spoke. That coupled with the potshots taken at The Time, Bria, Carmen and Susannah/fDeluxe leads me to believe that this wasn't a young novice. And no, I don't think it was Prince.

Also the 3EG wanker bemoans the exploitation of the symbol with regard 2 lost revenue. At Montreux 100's of fans wore excellent self made T-shirts etc. because nothing of quality has been sold 4 years. P could of made thousands of dollars selling merchandise inc. posters, tambourines, clothes, Andy Allo cd's. Those were rich folks he could of milked!!
