I know how so many of you all LOVE the film, "Purple Rain". But, do any of you ever think about the fact that "The Kid" abused Apollonia throughout the movie? I mean, who would want to be with anyone who's going to abuse them like that? You could throw out all of the excuses you want ["Awwwww, he got it from seeing his parents fighting" sad , "He didn't know any better" bawl ..... rolleyes ], but that's still not good @ all. I've heard many women say "The Kid" was SO sexy. But, would it be sexy, if he was beating your ass??? bored2

I can't believe some of you are whining about a little bitch slap in a movie, when a lot of movies now show the goriest violence, guns spraying bullets everywhere and high budget thriller and gore movies are released in the hundreds.

There are so many more diabolical things in most movies than a bit of bitch slapping. Okay I will say that it was wrong to hit women in the movie and I don't condone violence towards women, children or even other men in any way, but this is nothing compared to movies of the similar time like Commando, where Arnie must kill at least 300 Cuban soldiers in one scene and other ovies where thousands of nameless people are murdered.

Next to that, seems that a bitch slap between Prince and Apollonia is nothing.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Well--except for the fact that the end of Commando doesn't have Arnie and 300 Cuban soldiers getting ready to continue the beautiful experiment which is their love affair.

Without the abusive nature of the Kid and Apollonia's relationship, you've got no movie--or at least, you've got no "dramatic film." That's the plot that provides an excuse for the musical performances and ties them together. But if the violence between them is "nothing," then you've got no need for the Kid to change, and you've still got no movie.

Btw, Yes I do like the movie. I own the 25th anniversary DVD & everything. But I will admit, my opinion of it has changed over the years.....

Edited from "beat the shit out of" to abuse/d, because of those who have a problem with my wording of things. I'm sorry. lol disbelief It just seems that for every wrong thing that's obvious, some of you people have to try & find a way to make it not so bad. disbelief

Sorry--I did. Just a joke--which obviously fell flat for you. And it is true that I think you're supposed to care about it and judge "The Kid" for it, otherwise the movie doesn't work--which is what I was referring to when I said that about it being "nothing"--if it doesn't bother the viewer, then the movie fails. Obviously Purple Rain's nowhere near as violent as movies based around the Reagan-era American desire to blow everybody else away if given an excuse. But it's also a completely different kind of violence, based around a serious flaw in a personal intimate relationship, not the wiping out of hundreds of dehumanized representatives of an ideological position. Those movies were just plain messed up, and I didn't see many of them (honestly, they just bored me, even though I did think they were seriously messed up ideologically). I don't think those Shoot-em-ups have any relevance to Purple Rain, and I don't find Purple Rain to be misogynistic, or endorsing of violence, just a little underbaked. I think there's too little evidence of the Kid's growth to be convincing, but I also think Magnoli was working with what he had, and Prince's acting skills wouldn't have handled any heavy lifting. The music had to carry the transformation.

Really, I just wanted to bring the image of Schwarzenegger and the soldiers to life in everyone's minds. It really is a beautiful image, their coming together, in spite of the differences, their rough history, their being dead and all. The power of love.

The Kid could have had a drug problem, instead of abusing women, he could have abuse himself.....still could have been affective. She could have shown him that love & music are the only drugs he needs. Hence, "Purple Music". smile

And yet, can you actually imagine that Prince would have ever played a role that required him to abuse drugs--or even take them? That's more Morris' role, and he only drinks. And yet he was willing to play a role in which he...

Wait. I'm trying to defend the movie!! You tricked me!!

This is how Apples was being a bitch. She was flirting with Morris in The Kids face. She knew that he and Morris was going at it for her attention. What did that bitch do? She sat back and caused trouble. She knew what was going on. At first she didn't want to get in the way of it. But she did anyway. She basically used Prince and played his feelings against him so the bitch could get her big shot. She realized she made a bad choice even though he was beating her ass. So yes Apples had it coming. IDK bout any of you but that's what I recall:-) she got his ass beat by Jelly to. All her ass was doing is just sitting there looking. If she was a real woman she would've at least went and helped him by beating whoevers ass she could.
