PURPLE PAIN I know how so many of you all LOVE the film, "Purple Rain". But, do any of you ever think about the fact that "The Kid" abused Apollonia throughout the movie? I mean, who would want to be with anyone who's going to abuse them like that? You could throw out all of the excuses you want ["Awwwww, he got it from seeing his parents fighting" , "He didn't know any better" ...... ], but that's still not good @ all. I've heard many women say "The Kid" was SO sexy. But, would it be sexy, if he was beating your ass???

The whole point of the movie was his battle to get past following in his father's footsteps.

It is a fictional movie, and the point of it was that The Kid was coming to terms with the ways in which he was similar and the ways in which he was different to his father. |

Obviously it's a film, but would you like someone doing this to your mother, or sister, or daughter? I bet regardless his excuses, some of us wouldn't be so understanding....... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

I reread your original post. I think you are exxagerating quite a bit. It's been a while since I watched the movie, but I only recall one time he smacked her and he stopped himself before he did anything else. She dumped him on the spot and stayed away until the end of the movie, when she saw he had changed. Am I forgetting something?

Funny thing is that Morris day & crew was messing with him in the movie & he never did anything to them.

The treatment of Apollonia was noticed and raised at the time of the film's release. It gave rise to Prince explaining, as best as he was able, that there was no intention to offend, when the matter was alluded to in the subsequent MTV 'interview'. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

^^ exactly, it wasn't just the treatment of Appolonia that was questionable but nearly all female characters in the film are treated quite appallingly!! E.g. Woman thrown in bin by Jerome, kid's mother beaten, Appolonia 6 dancing in lingerie, Wendy & Lisa attempt to contribute their 'stupid music',etc

Look, I will admit my words for ABUSE were a bit harsh. But truthfully, it was abuse nonetheless. She was Slapped twice & tossed around a bit. Is that not abuse?? Yep. The Kid's an abuser, on the path to continuing to be an abuser, always the possibility that if he stays on that path he might wind up taking someone out (and even though Francis L. tries to kill himself, it's much more likely the victim would be or would also be the abuser's partner). That's the whole bleepin' point. You're supposed to see him slap her and think "oh, crap. Just like his old man." And he may not hit her all through the movie--but he's moody, cuts her down with words (including just plain nasty meanness directed at you on stage), and send you into freezing water and then "tease" you about your relative significance in comparison to his motorcycle (what's played off as teasing often becomes real once the abuser has a greater sense of control). He supposedly has learned something at the end--I guess from his father's attempted suicide--but I'm not clear just what he's learned.
The problem is, people assume it's all fixed up at the end. I don't. Apollonia's giving him a chance--and maybe he'll live up to it. The girls haven't left the band; they're giving him a chance--maybe he'll live up to it. Maybe. There might be room for hope--but honestly not much. It'll take work, and it'll be more than using someone's chord change and tossing someone an earring.

Just like Prince (the public persona) himself, the kid is indeed an abusive man that always seems on the verge of being "redeemed" and become a good guy. That's simply irresistible.

it was under the bridge when she was getting drunk with Morris after the girls performed he stopped himself from smacking her there but he did shoved her to the ground by putting her hand on her face if u look closely

First, since the release of the Purple Rain, many people have commented on the abusive treatment of the women. So, I'm amazed at you acting like this is a revelation of sorts. Second, in all of the time that people have commented on the abusive treatment of the women, I have never heard anyone try to justify that the abuse of the women in the film is acceptable on any level. However, what you seem to be missing, which is making me wonder if you are just trolling because I refuse to believe that you are this obtuse, is that the whole point of the film is The Kid's struggle to become a better person, which means breaking the cycle of abuse that he has learned from his father and the patriarchal society. (Oh, and I know that you mentioned this point, but you mentioned it only to minimize this point, which can't be minimized because it is the premise/theme of the film that you are conveniently trying to ignore.) Of course, the problem with a film, a song, and a television program is that they don't have as much time to construct and resolve a complex issue, such as domestic abuse, as, say, a novel would. So, in many cases, viewers/listeners are asked to make certain leaps--depending on how well the work is crafted--to certain conclusions, such as "do we have enough plot and character development to conclude that The Kid can change?" Of course, the answer to this question will, ultimately, be based on one's ideological notion of whether or not an abuser can change. So, if one believes that an abuser can change, then one accepts the premise that The Kid can or has changed. If one does not believe that an abuser can change, then one does not accept the premise that The Kid can or has changed, which also means that one thinks that the film is essentially flawed as much by its premise/theme as it is by its construction and execution of its premise/theme. But, again, the point of the film--i.e., the film's premise/theme, is that a person has the ability to recognize the error of one's ways and change.
*
Now, whether or not one chooses to forgive that person for the wrong that one has committed is another completely different discussion because, again, the premise/theme of Purple Rain is that a person can change one's negative ways, and domestic abuse (along with insecurity and selfishness, both of which are probably the causes of the abuse) is the issue or conflict that is used to present the plot and character development and change. So, I'll end with the words of Billy Sparks: "You ain't too far gone to see that," which in the context of my response means that you are not so ignorant as not to understand that the film is not justifying or glorifying abuse, but, again, using abuse as a central issue in The Kids struggle to become a better person. Thus, your repetitive question of whether or not anyone would allow themselves to be abused in the manner of the women of the movie is irrelevant and nonsensical because, again, the film is not in any way saying it is acceptable for someone to be abused. In fact, the film seems to make it clear that the abuse of women is wrong and that The Kid only becomes the clear protagonist when he realizes that abusing women is wrong. Before this revelation, a literary critic would argue that The Kid and Morris are battling for or being presented at dueling antagonists, and it is not until The Kid realizes the error of his ways that he is able to rise to level of being a flawed protagonist or flawed hero, in a strictly literary sense.

Tittypants. You're 29, with a birthday approaching right? Had to check, because you're coming across as a person with a fair amount of naivety...accompanied with a minimal understanding of the female 'gender'...which is fine if this is the case.
First off, have you asked those women why they thought the 'Kid' was sexy? Second, it's pretty well established that many women go for 'bad' boys at a certain stage in their lives. Come across that in your 29 years?
I thought the women were treated horribly in that film to the point of farce...yet back they went for more...
Are women's issues a particular concern of yours?
