Dirty Mind! "Head" alone beats Controversy and 1999. That doesn't mean that these 2 aren't funky... @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

That rhythm guitar on Controversy and Sexuality is too funky. So I say Controversy.

All are worthy candidates, but "1999" is the funkiest.

are you talking about the songs themselves or the albums? "Climb in my fur."

Dirty Mind - Album
Controversy - If we're talking about the title tracks, not full albums -----------------------------------------

I'm gonna go with Controversy. I'm not solely basing it on the strength of the album. These were the first three times that I saw Prince in concert. I've seen him a few times afterward, but in my opinion he can't possibly match the energy of those three tours. To me, each album is very strong and undoubtably can stand on their own merit. Even though he's done a ton of bangin' ass funk, nothing can touch that 'Let's Work' bass line. Plus, on the Controversy tour he came with Zapp and The Time. All three acts ripped it. I can still smell the Coliseum from that tour.

I vote for Controversy.
"Sexuality", "Private Joy" and "Let's Work" are definite party jams. It is a great disc to pop in, primarily because it has not been played to death by mainstream music. "1999", "Little Red Corvette" and a few others from the album "1999" put Prince on the map, but were very heavily rotated...are they popular or funky? I'm ready...brick me! Tina (~!~)

Nah, don't wanna brick ya, NettieSmiles! DMSR, Lady Cab Driver, All The Critics, Let's Pretend We're Married are way funky. A lot of Prince's most funky songs were not popular..unless you count amongst us, of course!

Controversy has too many weak links. 1999 is the funkiest of the three without question.

Granted, "Ronnie Talk To Russia" and "Annie Christian" may be "weak links", but they are catchy (and dated). But that doesn't underrate the funk of the album overall. Tina (~!~)

I'd put on "1999" as background music while chillin' with my family, playing cards, but "Controversy" makes me wanna get up and dance! Tina (~!~)

Tina (~!~) Jack U Off is forgettable. Private Joy is fluff and Do Me Baby is snoozeville and overrated. I really dig Annie Christian.

Im with you with the background music. It's an album that relies on groove probably more so than the actual songs themselves. It's great aural wallpaper.

The groove is there, especially with "Lady Cab Driver", but groove does not equal funk. "1999" is a blue moody kinda album. Thanks for your comment. Tina (~!~)

Private Joy is pop funk of the highest order.

I'd have to go with 1999 for 'most funk content'.
1999, DMSR & Lady Cab Driver are definitely Funk. & Automatic & All The Critics Love U In New York are funky. Controversy has the title track & Let's Work as funk representatives, plus Sexuality & Annie Christian in a funky vibe. Dirty Mind has Head & Partyup as the main Funk grooves, with the title track and Uptown as having funky leanings. So minute for minute, it's gotta be 1999. But having said that, the 2 funk tracks on Controversy are REALLY FUNKY.

Head is real funk too (but that's only 1 track) D.M.S.R. is the only 'real funk' track on 1999. as Funkadelic said: If You Got Funk, You Got Style.
