C what I mean? Why on EARTH wouldn't they count? Who ever said that vocal music had to be separate from intrumental music? On what grounds? Then what? Whe decide that an album also doesn't count if the lyrics isn't in English because only English counts. Then that only male or female vocalists count? Then that if the songs are more than 3 minutes long on an album it doesn't count as an album? And also if a song doesn't have a proper verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/verse/chorus structure then the album has to be dismissed as well? Do you realize that categorizing art like this, dismissing everything that's not the most popular format is what basically destroys art, make it a pawn to corporate industries that don't give a shit about art or the artsist they use to make money, make it soulless for it has to be a slave to the most common denominator? That's how we end-up with artists fighting against publishers/producers/labels/whatever that tell them "we can't release this, it's too weird, it's really good but it's too different from the mainstream to find an audience". This is how talented artists end-up starving while Ke$ha is making millions. This is how people who work hardall day are told by the media that they are too tired after work to THINK, and that for this reason they must be satisfied with listening to/watching/reading easy to grasp crap, and they buy it the poor souls! And y'all condoning this abomination? This is madness!!!

This deserves a standing ovation. clapping clapping clapping

I appreciate the aforementioned debate regarding the validity of including Kamasutra, but I am still wondering whether it should/should not be included. I can't work out whether it should be considered "released" as an actual project in itself? But under that logic, then "The Truth" wouldn't be considered a legitimate album, whereas I believe most would consider it to be?

For argument's sake...

IF Kamasutra is NOT included, then the entire totals are as follows:

TOTALS so far:

------------------------------

Purple Rain | 1 vote

Lovesexy | 1 vote

Graffiti Bridge | 1 vote

Diamonds & Pearls | 1 vote

Carmen Electra | 1 vote

Chaos & Disorder | 1 vote

Emancipation | 3 votes

Newpower Soul | 3 votes

Rave | 4 votes

The Rainbow Children | 3 votes

Xpectation | 1 vote

N.E.W.S. | 1 vote

Slaughterhouse | 1 vote

Planet Earth | 4 votes

Indigo Nights | 1 vote

MPLSound | 1 vote

20Ten | 2 votes

------------------------------

Interestingly, I actually REALLY like Planet Earth and I am starting to really appreciate the sheer depth and brilliance of Emancipation (after years of finding the production aesthetic difficult to vive with). Then again, I actually also REALLY dig Carment Electra and I really find Kamasutra soothing and soulful, so who am I to judge?!

For one thing I think an album is a "concept", therefore 2 or more albums can be released altogether and be several albums. The Truth and Crystal Ball are 2 different concepts that stand on their own and were only released together for marketing purposes, therefore they should count as 2 albums, not a 4-CD single album.

But anyway Kamasutra stands on its own, it was released on cassette through 1-800 New Funk on February 14, 1997, a year before being rereleased alongside Crystal Ball. Unless of course someone here decides that cassettes don't count but then I'm gonna go really mad lol lol lol

One could also argue that this is a side-project and that only "Prince" albums count but then again it would mean disqualifying Newpower Soul as well.

Shoot, Prince has quite a few I'm not a fan of. It's kind of hard to just say one. Rainbow Children may be the one that I've heard least though [of his album with vocals]. New Power Soul is horrible [but that was under the NPG name, not Prince, if I recall].

Rainbow Children - there are some decent tracks on it but so hard to get through the bad ones and the constant "message" - just not fun to listen to (in my opinion).

Interesting! A few years ago, there would have been lots of votes for this album. People overall must be warming up to it...

Diamonds and Pearls

really..? ok a matter of different tastes then..

I really heart the BIG singles deeply - Gett Off, Cream, D&P, Insatiable, Money Don't Matter 2Nite.

I do like Gett Off, Insatiable and Money Don't Matter, but all the other songs were unlistenable for me, which was a first for a Prince album. After ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, this album just sucked with the those male dancers, the corny raps and it just had very little funk. He came back big time with the Symbol album, but Diamonds and Pearls is my least favorite and one I never listen to.

Probably N.E.W.S

It's just really uninteresting to me.

And it's not because it's an instrumental album, because I love the Madhouse albums.

I just find N.E.W.S to be quite dull.

For me, it's hard to displace Rave from that prestigious pedestal - that first playthrough, it was the moment I finally accepted defeat. Even NPS I enjoyed, with the full knowledge it was a shit toss off, but Rave wow. I felt someone quietly lick their pale thin fingers and put out that last tiny flickering light that was burning within - the excitement for new Prince music.

.

The candle lay there in the dark and I'd look at it every so often and remember it's warm light fondly, then MPLSound was released and that same pale figure out of the dark lunged down it's ugly boney foot with its scabby, curled yellow toenails, stamping on that fragile candle squashing it forever.

.

So it's a coin toss between Rave & MPLSound. batting eyes

For me MPLSound is definitely up there (or down there) with his worst, as is Musicology and Chaos and Disorder. But least favourite has to be The Rainbow Children. I was bearly able to get through it on the fist listen - I actually couldnt believe what I was hearing. The smaltzy "jazz" sound, the stupid voice, the bullshit bible waffle, The Wedding Feast!, "that" part in Muse 2 The Pharaoh and all the rest. And its SO frustrating - a song like 1+1+1=3 could be good, but then that stupid voice comes in and spoils it. And The Last December starts off well, then all that "in the name of the father, in the name of the son" shit starts. And that stupid, stupid, stupid voice.......

New Power Soul. What a dreadful album and era. Coming off the heels of Emancipation and Crystal Ball (what I consider Prince's "new start") it was a career low-point. Yes, Come On/The One/Wasted Kisses are pretty good (Wasted Kisses surprised me a lot) but the rest are horrible. Officially it's credited to the NPG, which speaks volumes, but it's Prince all over it.

.

N.E.W.S. Not saying it's bad, but it's not "Prince". When I think of Prince instrumentals, I think of Madhouse/Venus De Milo/Alexa De Paris/Arboretum, etc. I even think of Shortberry Strawcake. I don't think of N.E.W.S. I need to give this one more listens, but overall it does rank in my least favorites.

.

Kamasutra. To think that, as a former "completist", I HAD to have this. I still have it, but I haven't listened to it in 15 years. He tried something new, and again (like NPS) it's not officially Prince. It's the NPG Orchestra. It's pretty amateurish IMO.

Joking aside (and this time including Kamasutra, given that it was officially released - both on cassette and as an album concept), the totals are as follows:

---------------------------------

Purple Rain | 1 vote

Lovesexy | 2 votes

Graffiti Bridge | 1 vote

Diamonds & Pearls | 2 votes

Carmen Electra | 1 vote

Chaos & Disorder | 2 votes

Emancipation | 3 votes

Kamasutra | 7 votes

The Truth | 1 vote

Newpower Soul | 6 votes

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic | 5 votes

The Rainbow Children | 5 votes

Xpectation | 1 vote

N.E.W.S. | 1 vote

Musicology | 1 vote

Slaughterhouse | 3 votes

3121 | 1 vote

Planet Earth | 4 votes

Indigo Nights | 1 vote

MPLSound | 5 votes

20Ten | 4 votes

------------------------------------

Bolded: albums receiving 4 votes and above

------------------------------------

Conclusions:

1. Kamasutra is the least favourite album thus far with the highest votes in total (7 votes), followed very closely by Newpower Soul (6 votes)

2. Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, The Rainbow Children and MPLSound are in equal place thereafter (5 votes each)

3. In joint 3rd place, Planet Earth and 20Ten (4 votes each)

I'm very surprised NOT to see Carmen Electra and Child Of The Sun here.

And I am even MORE surprised to see TRC among the most unpopular album: back then it was kind of a return to past glories for Prince in the musical press!!

True! But not my fav album either.

PE also got better reviews than Musicology in my country(B) and much more attention in press than 3121,

thanks to the good promo in the UK with the free paper release wich also got attention in other European countries.

I didn't know we could include Protege records, but if so, Carmen Electra is right down there with Bria's mess and that thing by TC Ellis, But still they don't have shit on the Rainbow children, that is truly awful and I stand by my vote. (But don't count it again, it was included on page 1).

It really is my least favourite and I consider it the worst album.

We can include protégés albums if they are Prince albums in disguise (such as Kamastrua or Newpower Soul BTW): Prince was completely behind the concepts of Carmen Electra and Elixer, basically he was all over the place, composed, arranged and performed almost everything, made every decision regarding the albums' content, songs order, cover art, etc. TC Ellis is another matter entirely: it's an album by TC Ellis and Levi Seacer Jr. with a few contributions by Prince (and Clinton as well), but Prince had very little to do with that album as a whole and therefore it's not eligible.

Some albums are in a grey area cuz thay are somewhat 50/50 (Sheila E., Pandemonium, May 19 1992, The Voice and I Am) and most people tend to consider them Prince albums as well, but Prince was more a huge contributor than a mastermind there so I would exclude them and keep only the side-projects Prince controlled entirely. On the other hand I'd tend to include GCS2000 and Superconductor because even though Prince wasn't the main composer these albums were full length collaborations between Prince and Larry/Andy: he was once again all over the place.

In the end it's hard to draw a very strict line, but TC's album is definitely outta it smile

Kama Sutra is virtually inlistenable for me. Those snipping scissors really get on my nerves.

My least favorite is the album 'Prince'. It's like sleepwalking music. All the hooks are filed off and the album ends up sounding like an uneventful blob. 'Sexy Dancer' and 'Bambi' could have sounded so much better!!

There are albums that are really boring like Kamasutra, Musicology and N.E.W.S., and then there are albums that are really offensive and/or obnoxious like the symbol album, TRC, NPS, Planet Earth and Rave.

His worst main release (Kamasutra was more of an afterthought/bonus album) is probably TRC since it repulses me philosophically.

Planet Earth or N.E.W.S. They're just boring. No meat on them bones at all. They're the ones I own that I never pull out and play ever. I guess For You would trump those though, by my own logic, since I don't even own that one at all. Never even heard Karmasutra.

Gonna go with Planet Earth since at least N.E.W.S. is OK dinner party music.
