...and what is it in particular that you dislike about it?

I think mine would probably be Newpower Soul. I appreciate that it is officially credited to the NPG, but Prince's input is significant throughout the offering and it unfortunately exemplifies to me a maddening weakening of what made Prince's "funk" so funky, the title track alone represents a stupefyingly diluted brand of so-called newpower soul. Lovesexy would crawl in its grave to hear that this is what became of that phrase's evolution. Of course, there are some plus points and guilty pleasures throughout the record, including the two mainstream singles (Come On and The One) and the bonus track (Wasted Kisses). I perhaps should also mention that whilst the backing band at the time stands as being amongst my least favourite, numerous of the aftershows performed during this era were surprisingly good and although the production quality on the record itself leaves alot to be desired, there are also some nostalgic and nice touches sprinkled sparingly throughout, such as the excellent piano keys (Mad Sex), the altered Bob George-esque voice (Freaks On This Side), and the crowd shout outs/Doug E Fresh/Larry Graham featured moments (Push It Up and I Like Funky Music). But, overall, it just seems weak and uninspired. In retrospect, I appreciate that this must have been a particularly difficult period in Prince's personal life, so perhaps it all stands to reason.

love,

Spirit

I concur.

Okay may get a bit of bashing hear, but really don't think much to....Purple Rain.

Maybe because I have overplayed it to many times, but at the moment it is my least favourite, pretty much bored with all songs on the album. Next week though this may change.

Though not heard kamasutra.

It happened to me too once, for many years I just couldn't stand to listen to PR anymore, I'd overplayed it but I'd overplayed all the 80's albums anyway but for some reason this disgust happened only with PR lol Now, for the last few years, it's OK, I take great pleasure in listening to it again (but I hardly listen to the old albums more than once or twice a year anyway).

Probably "MPLSound" or "Musicology". I really don't care for "Musicology". It's really patchy to me from the song sequence to the songs itself. "Mplsound" is probably the weakest from a produtction standpoint and quality of the songs. "Ur Gonna C Me" is so tinny sounding & its alot better on "ONA", "Box of Chocolates" is a really dumb song with a horrible chorus and forgettable song concept. "Ol Skool Company" and "No More Candy 4 U" I just dont care. The meandering rants are tiring. "Dance 4 Me" had some potential. The only song I care for would probably be "Valentina" but even with that the song concept is really sketchy and a little uncomfortable and immature.

Emancipation! Purple Rain ! Lovesexy! What the fuck, has this thread been hijacked by trolls, come on there are many albums far worse than these.

As for Kamasutra, it should not count, the only way to get it was at a NPG store, off Prince or as part of the Crystal Ball set, it was backing music for the show "Glam Slam Ulysses" and never available as a mass release public sale album. Its some background music. Prince did fuck all to promote it, its really just some music he made and not anything like his other albums.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

The question wasn't worst album, it was least favorite album...and at this moment in time for me it is Purple Rain.

There was a time when Prince fans answered NPS without a doubt...but nowadays it seems some worse things have happened on Planet Prince wink Still, C&D is my least fav, I prefer 'bad' funky Prince instead of Prince 's 'light rock'.That's why I like some MPLSound instead of Lotusflower!

20ten....something just doesn't click on this. When it first came out I was hyped, but not so much now. Hasn't been on the rotation in a long while. Also, although there are some classics

on there..Diamonds and Pearls is not on the rotation either.

Kamasutra goes without saying and was never on rotation. I don't hate 20ten or D&P, I just don't have them on my playlist right now.

If instrumental albums count, "Kamasutra."

If we're talking albums with words, for me it is definitely "The Slaughterhouse."

If we're talking 'in-store' releases, "Rave," "Chaos & Disorder," "Planet Earth," "20Ten," and "The Rainbow Children" and "MPLSound" come to mind, but I've gotta go with "Planet Earth." Each of the albums I mentioned is saved by at least one track (and sometimes only one track, yes, you, MPLSsound) but nothing saves "Planet Earth." "Chelsea Rodgers" and "The One U Wanna C," are okay, but not that okay.

[Edited 6/19/13 10:29am]

C what I mean? Why on EARTH wouldn't they count? Who ever said that vocal music had to be separate from intrumental music? On what grounds? Then what? Whe decide that an album also doesn't count if the lyrics isn't in English because only English counts. Then that only male or female vocalists count? Then that if the songs are more than 3 minutes long on an album it doesn't count as an album? And also if a song doesn't have a proper verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/verse/chorus structure then the album has to be dismissed as well? Do you realize that categorizing art like this, dismissing everything that's not the most popular format is what basically destroys art, make it a pawn to corporate industries that don't give a shit about art or the artsist they use to make money, make it soulless for it has to be a slave to the most common denominator? That's how we end-up with artists fighting against publishers/producers/labels/whatever that tell them "we can't release this, it's too weird, it's really good but it's too different from the mainstream to find an audience". This is how talented artists end-up starving while Ke$ha is making millions. This is how people who work hardall day are told by the media that they are too tired after work to THINK, and that for this reason they must be satisfied with listening to/watching/reading easy to grasp crap, and they buy it the poor souls! And y'all condoning this abomination? This is madness!!!

This deserves a standing ovation. clapping clapping clapping

I appreciate the aforementioned debate regarding the validity of including Kamasutra, but I am still wondering whether it should/should not be included. I can't work out whether it should be considered "released" as an actual project in itself? But under that logic, then "The Truth" wouldn't be considered a legitimate album, whereas I believe most would consider it to be?

For argument's sake...

IF Kamasutra is NOT included, then the entire totals are as follows:

TOTALS so far:

------------------------------

Purple Rain | 1 vote

Lovesexy | 1 vote

Graffiti Bridge | 1 vote

Diamonds & Pearls | 1 vote

Carmen Electra | 1 vote

Chaos & Disorder | 1 vote

Emancipation | 3 votes

Newpower Soul | 3 votes

Rave | 4 votes

The Rainbow Children | 3 votes

Xpectation | 1 vote

N.E.W.S. | 1 vote

Slaughterhouse | 1 vote

Planet Earth | 4 votes

Indigo Nights | 1 vote

MPLSound | 1 vote

20Ten | 2 votes

------------------------------

Interestingly, I actually REALLY like Planet Earth and I am starting to really appreciate the sheer depth and brilliance of Emancipation (after years of finding the production aesthetic difficult to vive with). Then again, I actually also REALLY dig Carment Electra and I really find Kamasutra soothing and soulful, so who am I to judge?!

kamasutra is painfully awfull, but i really hate '' the truth''

rule both of them out, then every album since ''gold'' is somewhat of a mixed bag, hard to choose, but i think....

the vault, is just too much leftovers thrown together, without any consistency in the tracks.

(C&D is the same method, but i like most of the tracks of that piece except 2, where here it's the other way around...)

Somewhat unfortunately and perhaps not too surprisingly, almost every single release since The Gold Experience has been mentioned by one Orger or another, whereas before 1995, the least favourite records mentioned are more an exception to this rule.

God, I hope he recovers from those two artistically bankrupt discs, though a lot of the 3rdEyeGirl material so far ain't much better imo.

I agree completely with "The Slaughterhouse" being void of anything listenable. For me, Dance 4 Me saves "MPLSound."

Agreed. It's bizarre how that poppy dud is packaged with the superior Lotusflow3r. Makes for better contrast I guess.
