Popular culture is the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images and other phenomena that are preferred by an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th and early 21st century. Heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society. . Although terms popular culture and pop culture are in some cases used interchangeably, and their meanings partially overlap, the term "pop", which dates from the late 1950s, belongs to a particular society and historical period. Pop refers more specifically to something containing qualities of mass appeal, while "popular" refers to what has gained popularity, regardless of its style. . Popular culture is often viewed as being trivial and dumbed-down in order to find consensual acceptance throughout the mainstream. As a result, it comes under heavy criticism from...

"You know, I was very happily married to Jill, my present wife, when I wrote it, but I had been divorced, my manager was getting divorced, a couple of good friends were getting divorced, and I thought, What's going on? Doesn't anybody stay together any more? The song came from that." –Phil Collins, stating his inspiration for the song "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore?", Playboy interview, October 1986
.
My friends keep falling and they can't get up
It's the same old story Well one says white and the other one black It's the same old story And I don't know why you keep emotions walled up Your heart's on your sleeve, but your sleeve is rolled up But it's alright, cos I don't mind I'm just trying to help, but I wonder why Doesn't anybody stay together anymore I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore .

. Saturday, March 24,1984. Shermer High School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.

I love that piece by Jesse Johnson in the movie, that Minneapolis sound always easily had an apocolyptic sound to it.

Great thread, thank you! I was 15 in 85, and had just moved to a new town with my family leaving all my junior and high school friends behind, so needless to say, I was bummed. Prince and The Breakfast Club got me thru the lonely parts of that new time and place. It all turned out okay as the kids in my new school were so much more into P than the kids at my last school. We formed a great clique and still remain friends to this day!

It's very interesting how music accompanies us through life. And there can be song you haven't heard since 1985 that when you do, it opens a door to a flood of emotions and memories.

Why did you make the announcement that there'd be no singles or videos from that LP, and then start issuing singles and making videos anyway?
Raspberry Beret" is a song by Prince and The Revolution. It was the first U.S. (and second UK) single from their 1985 album, Around the World in a Day. The sound was different from any previous Prince track, incorporating Middle Eastern finger cymbals, stringed instruments, and even a harmonica on the extended version. The song was also more in the pop vein than ever before, though the 12-inch single and video of the song feature a funky intro. Although the song was originally recorded in 1982 at Kiowa Trail Home Studio, in Spring/Summer , Prince drastically reworked it with The Revolution to give it more of an international sound. The string section was: Novi Novog on violin, Suzie Katayama and David Coleman on cello. Wendy & Lisa composed and conducted the strings on Raspberry Beret. Wendy & Lisa provided backing vocals, and the rest of the song was performed by Prince. Basic tracks for the album version were recorded in August, 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA.

When RASPBERRY BERET became the first hit single, it zoomed to the Top Five. A wonderfully picturesque narrative, the song featured strings arranged by Lisa Coleman – reflective of the Revolution’s increased involvement in Prince’s recordings.
– Alan Leeds, 1993
A few hours later, Prince is kneeling in front of the VCR, showing his "Raspberry Beret" video. He explains why he started the clip with a prolonged clearing of the throat. "I just did it to be sick, to do something no one else would do."
He pauses and contemplates.
"I turned on MTV to see the premiere of 'Raspberry Beret' and Mark Goodman was talking to the guy who discovered the backward message on 'Darling Nikki.' They were trying to figure out what the cough meant too, and it was sort of funny."
He pauses again.
"But I'm not getting down on him for trying. I like that. I've always had little hidden messages, and I always will."

The song was originally going to be included on the Dire Straits album Love over Gold. After the song was recorded, however, the vocals were not added. Mark Knopfler considered that they were not suitable for a male to sing, so the track was cut from the final mix. Legal restrictions prevented the original recording from being used, so two years after it was recorded, the track was remade by Dire Straits for Tina Turner. The original drummer Pick Withers had been replaced by Terry Williams. Also, Knopfler did not feature on the track and was replaced by Jeff Beck.

I originally bout this 80's classic a few years ago purely for the eccentric fashion and because like every other little girl - I am in love with Madonna.
This movie is full of fashion greats that are definitely worth repeating (despite what my mum says), but after watching it yet again last night over dinner I actually learnt a few other things too.
Now, if you haven't seen this I apologize. Anywho...
The main things in this movie that I picked up was the absence of technology (it was obviously the 80's, but it was nice), and the carefree nomad attitude of Madonna's character Susan.
It once again made me question the way we are living today.
I completely understand that computers are a necessity for every day business (hello I am on one now), but do we overuse technology so much that it takes away from personality?
I noticed that in this movie when people went to lunch, were at a bar or simply having a conversation they gave their undivided attention. There were no exists to answer the phone, tweeting while saying 'don't worry, I'm listening', or talking to someone all the while looking at your computer screen.
I also noticed how simply Susan was living. From motel to motel, travelling the country with her little briefcase full of clothes and I fell in love with the idea.
It makes me realize how all of us are working these jobs that we don't like for the majority of our lives just so we can buy the things that we invented a need for. Like IPads? I know they will make you look super cool but do you really need one when you have a phone & a laptop or is that $600 that you could put towards a trip to experience things that money cant buy. Or those girls who spend $500 on a dress thats made by a designer when they can buy one thats almost identical from a little no name boutique for $50. But they wont. Just so they can tell their friends how much they paid for it.
All in all, Desperately Seeking Susan is a fantastic movie about a scandalous, free spirited American girl travelling around in clothes that I would kill for. Go watch it. Now.
