How kitsch is Prince('s music) ? How kitsch you think Prince is on a scale of ten, concerning his looks and style ? Then, how kitsch you think his overall musical output is ? I'm not only talking about his sound, but everything. The way he arranges his music, the lyrics, the embellishments, songwriting, etc. And by naming or saying 'kitsch' I mean it in many ways. It doesn't necessarily have to be only negative. A portion of Kitsch can be really good and interesting. - I'll give his looks, concepts and style a 7/10 His music a 4/10 (because of the lyrics mostly), IMHO. thedance said: and what is "kitch", define please. Kitsch (/ˈkɪtʃ/; loanword from German) The term is generally reserved for unsubstantial or gaudy works, or works that are calculated to have popular appeal. The concept of kitsch is applied to artwork that was a response to the 19th century art with aesthetics that convey exaggerated sentimentality and melodrama, hence, kitsch art is closely associated with sentimental art. ^ ok, but what makes me confused (as a non-english): "kitsch" is a rather negative charged word isn't it..? [Edited 6/13/13 1:29am] Prince 4Ever.

I would place it at about a 6.5 out of 10.I mean, there are times when it is somber and a bit ....earm, high-concept? But, for the most part, the tunes are mostly assessable no matter who you are. [Snip - luv4u]

He's more camp than kitsch.

Oh he's certainly not completely kitsch. Indeed he's got quite a camp volume, even in his music. To me the 1991-1993 era was in style and fashion very kitsch. Horrible in my (humble) opinion. The songs are sometimes horrible too. Real kitsch to me. on Graffiti Bridge, D&P and most of the Emancipation album are quite some kitsch to me. (to name a few): Graffiti Bridge Round and Round Live 4 Love Walk Don't Walk Strollin' Blue Light I wanna Melt With U 3 Chains O Gold The segues Cream (I never liked it) Peach (same reason) My Summertime Thang Emancipation Somebody's Somebody Mr. Happy... Etc Everyone will have his own unlike list of songs. But to me they feel like kitsch. Like bad taste music. Overdone. Silly. Dull even. Anyhow. Lovesexy is something else. To me this album and overall style is also kitsch, but in a very positive and acceptable way. I like it. The music absolutely is great. Super. He gets away with his silly outfits here. Most images are Iconic even. Just like his Purple Rain style, which was highly over the top, but absolutely great (kitsch).
