On a side note... what are calypso drums?
basically it's just steel drums. the percussion in this song reminds me
a bit of steel drums (especially the last 3 minutes).
i think the only time prince used them before was on "new position".
although it's probably synth drums on "ain't gonna miss u", i guess?
I was only playing with you
I was born and raised in Trinidad and I had never heard it called that before.

If that's a steel pan then it's heavily altered to sound like something else, best use still has to be on 'New Position', it was technically poor but used to excellent effect. [Edited 6/17/13 16:09pm] |

Let's see: a medicore and instantly forgettable backing track coupled with a spite-filled lyric, because apparently once again some woman did him wrong.
Oh well, I guess he felt the cattle needed feeding so he squeezed one out. I'm still hoping that one day Prince will look back at his post-1995 output and admit on the record that he's ashamed to have put out so much rubbish.
Dream on! He'll never do that!
No-one was expecting you to like this kind of knee jerk ditty but one thing I wanted to ask you....why do you make the cut-off point 1995? I know you're a big fan of The Gold Experience but that album was actually recorded in 1994, just released in 1995 and in 1995 he was already recording tracks Emancipation, so wouldn't it be better to say 1994 or 1996 are your cut off points?! As right now you're saying half of Emancipation is in the 'golden era'.
I personally would include Emancipatiion (up to 1996) as there are some great tracks in there among some filler - it also sounds like Prince at his happiest.
I remember at the times reviews of The Gold Experience were lukewarm, 3/5 being quite typical. Don't you think it's a case of time making things seem more classic? Don't forget Prince came out with some crap and filler even in his classic era....
I think sometimes you have a good case but I don't always think you're objectively logical, more influenced by your emotional response to P than the actual music. I guess it also depends on the year you were no longer in Prince's employ - i guess since u were no longer there, it all went downhill right?!
I mean there has been some stuff since, such as some songs on 2009's LOTUSFLOWER set that are on a par with things in the 78-96 era.
1 area he badly needs to improve is his marketing and PR strategy and for that I would advise him to outsource to the professionals and hire Bowie's PR/Marketing person....

Very interesting observation, about a possible steel drum sound. Didn't notice that before until I listened to it a few minutes ago between 4:29 - 4:40 in the song. Also can hear an xylophone and that drum sound throughout the song, sounds like chinese drums. (see image below) However, I could be wrong, feel free to correct me, but that's what it sounds like to me. Love the various intrumentation throughout the song. I can also hear between point 3:01-3:09, what sounds like a bit of George Clinton's 'Atomic Dog' .
[Edited 6/17/13 15:38pm]
see, now that's what i'm talking about. people were so quick to dismiss this song
as boring, lazy, going nowhere etc etc.
to me it just sounds like a 3 minute 'regular' song that goes into a nice extended
grove at the end with lots of things happening and many little ideas floating in and
out of the song. to me, this whole song is the opposite of boring.
Agree. There's so much going on instrumentally in the song, that makes the song interesting. My kind of music. I already played this track at least 20 times. Love the funk beat and various instrumental inclusions. With those changes going on in the song, and how the horns ascend, throughout the song to a climax.... and then returns to do it again.
Then when the '2nite' lyric part comes in, is where you hear that steel drum sound you're talking about, as well as an xylophone sound, and what sounds like chinese drums giving off that nice funk beat with the bass, and cabasa.
The cabasa, around 2:57 - 3:10, (if that is what that instrument is), is what reminds me of George Clinton's 'Atomic Dog' track throughout that part of the song. Then around 3:35 - 3:49, you can hear an xylophone sound, then the horns take over for a minute. Then, when Ledisi says "Get Gone!", after that, sounds like the bass gets it's turn around 5:20, and then it goes into what sounds like 'chinese drums' taking over until the end. Now did I get that right?
I like how the song leaves room for you to hear the various instruments, and the catchy lyrics.

i'll have to listen again with your notes at hand but it sounds like you know what you're

and you're right, there's so much going on and so many little ideas, yet the song has room
enough to breathe and sound 'minimalist' at the same time.

Exactly! I was trying to pinpoint the instruments at their mark in the song. The various instruments get their shine in the song, at the right points. Love the horns and what sounds like chinese drums in the song, and the cabasas gives it that umph! [Edited 6/17/13 16:48pm] |

nope. i don't know what other version you have but the one premiered over the pa by dj rashida
and prince at the dakota was exactly the same as this one. at least lyrically. and i'm 98% sure it
is also the same musically although i'm not an fbi sound analyst
i remember because i particularly liked the "blessed are the meek" part since that is about the
only bible bit that prince dusts off now and again that i thoroughly agree with and like to hear.

This is barely a song. The initial groove is good, but like so many newer Prince songs, it throws in a bunch of elements from classic Prince without building a good song around any of them. It's like Prince has forgotten what makes Prince music good. It isn't the mere use of a linn or a funky bass line. Also, how many times do we need to hear a song where a woman has wronged him while he feigns total innocence? Y'know, SOTT was an album where Prince showed actual maturity; where he explored complex themes of conflict that implicated both himself and the woman (see ICNTTPOYM, Strange Relationship). It's incredible that he's regressed so profoundly all these years later. This is boring, High/Chocolate Invasion era Prince; aka Prince on auto-pilot yet again. Huge thumbs down. Go to other boards and the song is getting raves and remember Sign Of The Time while being a masterpiece was not a big seller when it came out. The masses like the following things in their music. A hook, a story (usually about being wronged), and imaturity. I like a funky bass line so I am fine with this cut. Maybe he wants to put out music that does not just appeal to the 2,000 people on this board.

to ALL of that.
Thanks for nicely expressing how I feel about this song and Prince at the moment.
*
I had an epiphany this morning and I'm no longer angry with Prince. I feel sorry for him. I apologize to him. I feel he has not only regressed so profoundly in his recent music, but in my opinion he hasn't shown maturity dealing with his personal relationships. His awareness is not where I thought it would be. Sad and sorry to see Prince is not growing. I wish he would get real, stop with all the publicity shenanigans, apologize to me, and make mind-blowing music again. If Prince doesn't apologize to me I ain't gonna buy his music and I ain't gonna miss him, and I won't forget the negative memories I have of him.

I'm curious to know if you think it's okay for Prince to use his music as a platform to try to belittle, insult, rip off his fans, and play mind games with people? |

I like this song, the music is-- as someone else described it....busier than a NY subway at rush hour...(love that!). Its not the best Prince song I've heard nor is it (by far) the worst.
As for the lyric's meanings many songs both positive and negative are written based on someone's life (love) experiences, that's nothing new.
There's always many sides to a story (just ask your kids about who spilled the milk on the carpet..LoL and you'll know what I mean) and often times, perceptions, assumptions and then the dreded lack of communication may leave parties to know or not know what actually happens and/or transpired in a particular situation, which is tragic, but we've all been there, right?
As for trolls, I really don't care for them as their sole and exclusive purpose is to create dissention--and life's too, too short for that. It's no wonder their preferred place of residence is under run-down, weed overridden bridges--places most of us would never think of inhabiting. But, such is life.
Dang, what is up with the formatting here?

Let me add and then im done :
.....I have been wronged in very deep and tragic ways in life...starting as a young child...by my own family members. We all have in one way or another.
I could of chosen to hold on to the wounds or i choose to let it go and let God do His thing. Vengance is His. My part is to forgive and let God handle it. ... cuz forgiveness is not for the offender but for me to let it go and move on with my life, with no expectations from the other or others involved.
It will never happen unless U forgive in ur own heart...then watch what God can do to release the resentment and bitterness..its a beautiful most freeing thing ever!!!
just my on "being wronged" cuz it aint gonna end ... its life. Its how u handle it not the offender...
Your about vengeance and forgiveness is worth something and like you, I too have forgiven any and everyone who has ever hurt me a long time ago. I've forgiven them because it was best for me to forgive them. I would just like to add that God/Jehovah/Allah/Jesus/Om/I Am/Higher Power or whatever you choose to call IT helps those who help themselves. I'm sorry if the truth about your idol makes you uncomfortable. I was very uncomfortable when I found out what Prince was really about. I'm curious to know if you think it's okay for Prince to use his music as a platform to try to belittle, insult, rip off his fans, and play mind games with people?
Your opinion of prince doesnt seem to make otheres umcomfortable. They all ALREADY knew he very much could be an asshole...u are apparently just finding out. It didnt take us to have too much of a personal experience to find this out either...just a little observant.
Also...his music can be uplifting(I would die 4 u), giving(love4oneanother tour) encouraging (walk dont walk), empowering(p control), socially conscientious (dear mr man) appreciative(human body).
I guess its unfortunate that prince....like MOST human beings is multi-demensional...isnt idolic...makes mistakes and has negative thoughts and attitudes....like MOST human beings.
When was it you helped fund a charter school for inner city kids...help finance the making of malcolm x...pay for a bunch of kids to go on a field trip...encourage countless numbers people to realize their "star" potential in the music scene, or any other scene, artistic or not...to realize that u got it and you can do it. Despite his shortcomings, hes a very positive force. But if all u see is negative...thats all u gonna get. [Edited 6/18/13 19:28pm] |

If you don't care for trolls why are you under the run down, weed overridden bridges trolling? [Edited 6/18/13 19:26pm] |

Maybe you weren't but some members didn't like my comments and acted uncomfortable with my opinions on Prince. Some said I was not to be trusted, several called me crazy, immature, a nut, etc. You say they know Prince is very much an ass... but if they know this why do they have such a problem with me? Is Prince the only one who can act like an ass....? I'm not just finding out Prince can be an ass.... btw so apparently you don't know what you're talking about. I've known for several years. I've observed how some of his fans can be even bigger ass....s.
I don't know about Prince being multi-demesional but I know of his multidimensional human expression in the 5th dimension.
Like I said in another thread, I love him and he deserves to be loved but some of his fans think people shouldn't express it if they've experienced pain, suffering due to something Prince did or didn't do. He has certain responsibilities and lots of his fans have lost money, time, and energy because of him and his people. Maybe some of you think they should get over it and move on but some aren't at the awareness level and they aren't ready to move on.
As far funding a charter school for inner city kids, etc. "For everyone to whom much is given of him shall much be required; and of him to whom men entrust much, they will require and demand all the more." Luke 12:48. I studied Matthew 6:1 as well so I won't list any of my good deeds. I never said Prince is all wrong. At times he has been a positive force but I've experienced the effects of his negativity, narcissism, and neglectfulness. If he doesn't give me an apology it means he's giving me a reason to think of him as nothing. And nothing from nothing leaves nothing. I don't have to insult him. I don't fear him. I don't think he's a 'curse', but I won't miss him and this would be a positive thing, right?
