On a side note... what are calypso drums?

basically it's just steel drums. the percussion in this song reminds me

a bit of steel drums (especially the last 3 minutes).

i think the only time prince used them before was on "new position".

although it's probably synth drums on "ain't gonna miss u", i guess?

Interesting observation. He's used similar sounds in different songs as well. The sound initially reminded me of the beginnings of Diamonds And Pearls and Fascination, but also Scandalous.

Upon closer listening, it sounds like Scandalous more of a chimes or tubular bells sound, Fascination sounds more like a xylophone, and D & P might be steel drums?

somehow those first 3 seconds of "diamonds and pearls" always sound like

something with a string to me. the reverb, somehow, or the echo on it just

makes it feel like a plucked string with an effect on it.

fascination does sound more like a xylophone, but with prince i can never

be 100% certain of such things. it might just be a synth sounding like the

xylophone. kind of like he does synth trumpets etc sometimes. however,

on the 'chorus' of fascination it does sound like actual steel drums. but then

it's confusing since the short guitar solo at 2:36-2:50 actually sounds a lot

like a steel drum or a synth is playing the exact same notes at the same

time.

and then there's effects he puts on things. like the shift in pitch used on

the 'steel drum/chime' in "ain't gonna miss u". it's starting to sounds like

he's using 6 different ones when in fact it's probably just different effect

or pitch, just like his vocals in the song.

and then people say that prince isn't trying or bored. there's always a lot

of stuff going on in his songs. endless details actually.

Very interesting observation, about a possible steel drum sound. Didn't notice that before until I listened to it a few minutes ago between 4:29 - 4:40 in the song. Also can hear an xylophone and that drum sound throughout the song, sounds like chinese drums. (see image below) However, I could be wrong, feel free to correct me, but that's what it sounds like to me. Love the various intrumentation throughout the song. I can also hear between point 3:01-3:09, what sounds like a bit of George Clinton's 'Atomic Dog' .

see, now that's what i'm talking about. people were so quick to dismiss this song

as boring, lazy, going nowhere etc etc.

to me it just sounds like a 3 minute 'regular' song that goes into a nice extended

grove at the end with lots of things happening and many little ideas floating in and

out of the song. to me, this whole song is the opposite of boring.
