Hypocrite? In one post you've complained about the word fuck in Prince's lyrics and then praised it's use in the song "Had U". A couple posts later, you mention "Sexy M.F." as a fine example of his use of the word. You contradict yourself...

Very observant grass hoppa. Do you feel better now for pointing that out? I actually overstated the subject line. My co-worker uses the F word like its going out of style. It doesn't phase me. In reality neither does Prince's use of the word. I'm just glad he no longer curses in his music. I can now bump his music in front of my kids without having to lower it to avoid hearing the cursing. Different strokes for different folks. The subject was just an attention grabber. Now you know. Don't hate, celebrate! klick klick

There are a number of cases over a number of albums spanning many musicians where the lyrics printed do not match the recording and in this case it's pretty clear, (even without headphones) that he says fucking. Just spraying...

I jump for joy when I hear Prince use the F word. I wish he would bring it back and stop being a stupid prude. "Do you really know what love is?"

I thought it was funkin' I thought it was more creative too. I swear I hear it.
I love Face Down, is that wrong? No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ . He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

Coming from Prince - someone who is obviously a sexual being with a bit of an attitude - it fits. He's the bad boy with the looks and the musical chops to pull it off. He's also secure enough in his ways to drop the "F" word almost overnight and not think a thing about it. It's just another word in his vocabulary - it doesn't define him like someone like Jay Z or anything. . Not that I've ever heard MJ use the "F" word, he did go through that period of crotch-grabbing and humping onstage and THAT was cringe-inducing!

I agree. The use of profanity during the 80s was generally well calculated, like a chef's masterful use of seasoning. During the 90s, the songs became a bit too salty with cursing. However, I do love “The Exodus Has Begun” and enjoyed chanting “Play that muthafu**ing bass” during the live performance of “Face Down”.

His use of the F word was and always will be dope to me. Whether he uses it or not is up to him...but if anything, it just shows a level of artistic restraint, thus not being free. Depends on how you look at it. I'd personally love it if he continued. Why stop? It's only vulgar because you think it is.
Oh...
It's TOTALLY "I ain't fuckin' just for kicks, no"
Prince's slippery ass never put in the actual curse words. So regardless of what it says....that's simply what it is.

Muthafucking and mutherfucker are rhythmic gold. Straight up 16 notes...fits in contemporary music very well. And it's a spicer! A source of internal joy of simply saying the phrase itself.

Agree with those saying Prince overdid it in the 90s because he was trying to follow hip-hop's lead. . I like DOW and P.Control etc, but listening with fresh ears, it's clear why he was laying it on so thick and it's pretty pale. Maybe if hadn't tried to be all wiggidy-wack in the 90s, he wouldn't have been so verbally chaste later on. He always swore, but MF after MF in some of thse songs probably coloured his view of the use of swearing later on and his apparent desire to atone for it.

I agree that it is, ultimately, all a matter of choice, but I don't think that not using profanity "shows a level of artistic restraint," because as a poet and short story writer I do view the use of profanity as an ignorant mind trying to express itself. Of course, as with all things, there are exceptions, and even the most creative of people can use any word or group of words in a creative manner. So, for me, it is not that Prince used or uses profanity so much as it is that during the 90s his use seemed much more contrived than during the 80s. Of course, I don't think I'm going to go running and screaming away if he uses it again, but if I have my choice I'd rather be exposed to art/language/lyrics that are the most creative, and profanity seems to show a lack of creativity in most cases. However, while I love the vast majority of what we've gotten in 2013, "Breakfast Can Wait" doesn't have any profanity, and those are some lame lyrics. Thank God it’s got that nice groove that allows me to ignore how lame the lyrics are.

I cringe more when I read that Jamie Lewis is going to 'do' another Prince song. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

As recently as the Billboard performance of Fixurlifeup, Prince did not sing the same lyrics as what was projected directly on the screen behind him. It had to do with the line (paraphrasing) "don't worry about what others do, focus on what u do". One of his lines was a little different, but still fit right in.
Slightly off-topic. I remember seeing the back cover for Purple Rain, and thinking that the words to that poem were the lyrics to When Doves Cry. I kept thinking "there must be an extended version or something".
