During this era it was a bit heavy on the cussing for me, but I wouldn't change it.

Could care less if Prince decides to cuss or not, now or in the future. His path, his journey.

To some extent, I can understand where you're coming from, but overall,

I personally enjoy Prince's use of the F word. Mainly for the reason you pointed out with Had U.

Some songs just wouldn't be the same (or as edgy) without this naughty word.

Erotic City immediately springs to mind. As well as Superfunkycalifragisexy.

There's bound to be many many more fine examples.

Prince overdid it with swearing in the 90's. It seemed a bit forced...like a kneejerk reaction to what was going on in hip hop.

My personal favourite may very well be Adore.

It's totally unnecessary, but just so so cool, the way he delivers it...

yeah... very much so my formative years, I distinctly remember "Did he just say the EFF word on the radio?" And then as an adult thinking about how subversive it was. It isn't awkward for me to hear it. Especially considering how raw and punk his act seemed at times. It's really more odd hearing him "edit" himself.

F******ing is nothing unnatural.

Rather not hearing the word is a matter of personal taste and perhaps having another language as mothertongue.

His policy of changing his own lyrics around because fo whatever is a sin: why can't we see the use of words as art, as fitting in a description of a situation, etc and thus understand that changing the words around changes the song.

It can sound unnatural in an artistic sense though. I agree with klick2me that the use of the word really adds something to "Had U". The whole premise of that song, musically and lyrically is to give an ambiguous and seemingly contradictory tenderness to something overtly profane and possessive. A brilliant song all round.

On the other hand, the break where he says "I would only F with one" in the title track sounds completely contrived. Only a purtian could consider a word in itself as offensive, but the gratuitous use of language for shock value can be an artistic vulgarity. It just sounds completely out of context in Chaos and Disorder, and unfortunately it seems that's the intention. The song is a great, straightforward rocker that is diminshed by that section which only sticks in the mind for being a cheap gimmick.
