Favorite Prince spiritual songs? Hey guys, I believe in Christ and just had a friend dedicate his life to Christ and was wanting to put together a disc of good Prince spiritual songs. I'm no saint, but would like to help my friend and I think Prince has a good collection of songs that would edify and motivate him. Please help me come up with a disc to share with him. Thanks. Sorry, but I want to get this out tomorrow, so I made this quick compiltation.. 1. God 2. Anne Stesia 3. Eye Know 4. And God Created Woman 5. I Wish U Heaven 6. The Ladder 7. The Everlasting Now 8. Last December 9. The Holy River 10. The Word 11. The Lion of Judah 12. 4 The Tears In Your Eyes
Everywhere is another good choice along with the The Love We Make and The Cross. (How could I miss The Cross?) Think I'll redo it and put on The Cross...dumb me.

I do like that song, but I'm not sure it's a Christian message. I do agree with the idea of karma, but the concept of "you reap what you sow" is more in keeping with the idea as oppossed to reincarnation. But thanks for the suggestion.

Ah, sorry, 8up, I misread the part where you wished for the songs to be Christian per se in message. Yes, Dolphin is more akin to more Eastern spirituality. How about the songs, Controversy and The Rainbow Children, perhaps as an extended opening or closing or bonus track? They are a little different to your usual "religious" song, I know, but quite funky nonetheless.

Also, although not a Prince-penned track, Emancipation greatly benefitted from his cover of "One of Us".

I find the songs in which spirituality is related to personal suffering and strength very interesting. Actually, that's the main side of spirituality in my opinion. Like someone said, religion is for those who believe in hell; spirituality is for those who have been there and who have escaped it or are trying to do it.
Prince reflects it powerfully in "Still Would Stand All Time", "Love... Thy Will Be Done" and "Lion Of Judah", for example.
Prince is one of the best composers of spiritual music of the last decades, something that is usually forgotten when only his sexual lyrics and attitudes are underlined.

Thank you much for sharing and I agree with you. I love the struggle Prince has with this issue just like most who contemplate the afterlife. As a kid and I heard Controversy (around 1982) I was blown away by the Lord's prayer ( I still say the extra "for ever and ever amen" although it's not in the Bible when I say that prayer.) Again, thanks.

Love, Thy Will Be Done is my very favorite. I know there's a Prince lead vocal version out there. I've never heard it but Martika's and Sonny T's are good. I prefer Martika's. Still Would Stand All Time is my second fave. My father hates Prince. Thinks he's a nasty freak who makes devil's music. One day, I put on Graffiti Bridge, and when SWSAT came on, my dad said, "what are you listening to? That is beautiful." What a nice gift for your friend!! "She made me glad to be a man"

Prince has different sides, he certainly is (or was) a nasty freak who makes devil's music, but he is other things too, particularly a fantastic composer of spiritual music, but that isn't attractive to the mainstream and to a great part of the music buying public (and even to a part of his own fans), so that facet remains unknown to many.

You put some work into this list and it's a great album. On my way to track it now. Thanks so much. I think Prince is so honest in his God songs unlike most Christian songs which never touch the evil part of humanity. It's been a long time since I've listened to Still Would Stand All Time and can't actually remember the lyrics. Graffiti Bridge music A+, movie D- . The live version of 4 the Tears In Your Eyes seems to be better than the studio version, is that the one on your list. I would also include I Know and The Everlasting Now. Don't you like those songs?
