Message to Prince and the "young people". Open message to Prince, or his 22 year old manager:
As I type this, I am about to leave my house to see Prince at The Myth. I am excited, but I am filled with expectations of being one of the "youngest" people at this show. Why is that? Prince has a hecka cool new group, his sound is timeless, he looks/acts 20 years younger than he is, yet he has more trouble attracting new/young fans than Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, and Mick Jagger.
*
Simply put, Prince has put a strangle hold on gaining new fans. Does he realize this?
*
Since parting with WB, Prince was never going to be the monster he once was on the charts. That goes with "not playing the game." However, there are about a million other ways to reach new fans in the 21st century. Namely, youtube. Prince was right all those years back, you don't need a record company now. What you do need is a way to reach new fans... currently, Prince doesn't have it.
*
How many young people/new fans can afford the steep ticket prices to see Prince's new hot band? Not many.
*
Upon witnessing Prince's greatness on the Billboard music awards, how many can listen to/watch Prince via the internet?
*
Almost none.
*
Look, I could give a care about Prince attracting new fans. It means less waiting in line for me on nights like tonight. However, if Prince really does care about his legacy, he could do a lot more to take better care of it and make his greatness accessible to all those "not in the know." It's so easy.
* Prince has been 21st century since, at least, 1982. Why doesn't he embrace it?

I think you might have your expectations shattered. |

Alright, this is as good a place to say this as any: when Prince says he likes to be around young people, he does NOT mean he wants to reach a young audience. He does NOT mean he wants to know what young people are listening to. He simply wants to have a new band that makes HIM feel young again. And be around beautiful girls. (after all, he doesn't have a band of young men.) Who can blame him, really...? [Edited 5/25/13 15:08pm]

he doesnt have to attract new fans because like he said in an interview that he already has his legacy.

I don't disagree. Yet, he doesn't take care of it as well as it could be.
*
At tonight's show, he said, something to the effect of I see we got a lot of young people in the audience. If you like this song, remember it's from 1986, it's called "U Got the Look".
* What? Prince, it is one of your most famous songs! Perhaps if you didn't strangle youtube, etc. your 25 and under crowd would already know/love this song as much as we did when it came out.
*
Ultimately, it's his career and he's doing great. Aged more gracefully than I would have imagined still untouchable. However, it shouldn't be a big epic quest for potential new fans to explore/experience his legacy.

I'm 19 and unfortunately I don't know many people my age who actually KNOW who Prince is, there might be those who have heard Kiss, 1999 or Purple Rain somewhere or know that he changed his name to a symbol but how would they ever know to check him out when his music isn't available on youtube, his albums are hard to find and he hasn't had a big hit in almost 20 years? I think a lot of people who liked Prince back in the day actually think Prince must have died because unless you pay attention or are lucky enough to see one of his TV appearances he is very easy to miss if your not already a fan.

I heard that warner bros is the one that is pulling his catalog from youtube, not prince himself....just like they wont release the remasters of signs o the times with bonus tracks.

This is like telling Mozart needs more fans. Yum no.

Prince is a rare find, younger fans dont deserve and wouldnt know what to do with him and his music. And by younger fans, I mean younger than me and I'm 29. &

Funny enough, Mozart's work is easier to find/listen to/experience than Prince's. "New Power slide...."

You must be joking, right!? That being said, it doesn't matter to me whether he attracts new, young fans or not. [Edited 5/25/13 23:57pm]

I agree. Older fans talk about this often. It's NOT that we want a second Purple Rain or SOTT, I liked the past decade. But it's sad 2 see how he doesn't take care of his own legacy. Leaving WB still has his consequences! [Edited 5/26/13 0:07am] Love4oneanother

Would you say that, in 2013, buying CD's are primarily the way people are exposed to/find out about/experience/explore music or musicians that are new to them?

You're seeing it wrong w.r.t. the young people. You need to target the young people around mr P. His 'manager', 'PA', and whatever. They need more sidom, experience, backbobe, etc and taht usually comes with age. I am not dissing them but putting things into perspective. With older people around him he has more resistance to deal with as they might have a stronger ideas and opinions on what's good and what not. Thus, a better policy w.r.t. shows, pricing etc might evolve then solving your issues. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

- Obviously lesser than the cd's selling peak days, although Amazon , CD Universe and iTunes offer enough download choices. A number of fans and listeners visit the org, where recently even have been posted topics and updates about high quality downloads from some of his albums: - - http://prince.org/msg/7/3...g/7/395226 - - http://prince.org/msg/7/3...g/7/397206 - - http://prince.org/msg/7/3...g/7/395447 - - http://prince.org/msg/7/3...g/7/396570 - - http://prince.org/msg/7/3...g/7/396757 - - http://prince.org/msg/7/3...g/7/397657 - With the exception of ebay and gemm (at least, I couldn't yet spot there any signs), most of those other sites have facebook or twitter links on their selling pages, so they try to stay connected with social media. - [Edited 5/26/13 10:57am]

Prince's fanbase is almost certainly 35-45 years olds. People who were teens when he was hitting it big in the late 70s/early 80s and another wave in the "comeback" of the early 90s. . So Hannah and Donna, realistically their parents are Prince's core demographic. Not sure about Ida - she's a bit matronly . . .

You know him?
You've spend enough time with him to know him well enough to be in love with him? 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
