Prince Funds High School Music Trip 01 May 2013Pop superstar Prince reportedly donated the proceeds from a recent concert to help a high school jazz band reach a competition in New York City. The Kiss hitmaker played at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon on 21 April (13) and he pledged the proceeds to the American Music Program, which is made up of young musicians from local schools, to fund their trip to the big Apple, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six. The group will now be able to take part in Essentially Ellington, a contest and educational festival at Manhattan's Lincoln Center, which runs from 10-12 May (13).

He donated the money, with the stipulation that they have to play selections from Kamasutra and N.E.W.S. in their competition!
Seriously though, this is really great news. It's definitely a good thing for Prince to give back and this stage of his career. A lot of his peers (Bono, Sting, etc) are almost as well-known for their charity work as they are for their music.

Calm down, of course this isn't "about me", silly... . it's a good thing, that Prince is thinking of others/ supporting a band, but why did he choose jazz music... that was what I was surprised about, in my comment above... . but yeah charity, supporting a good cause, who can be against that.. . let's hope Prince will follow that road, and get a lot of "positive press" out of this, I guess that's the main reason why people are "doing charity" anyway, isn't it..... . . but, I don't like jazz at all.. NEWS is so terrible... it's an opinion, "it's time 4 jazz 2 die" like he wrote back then - whatever he meant by that, I guess he's changed his mind several times about that....... . the ONA Tour was jazzy a decade ago, and like I mentioned, NEWS, -- I hope it is ok to speak my opinion, I am not that crazy about that. . I have seen Prince live 19 times since '87, but the jazzy concerts like the 2 ONA concerts in Aalborg and Copenhagen, weren't my faves. SOTT, Lovesexy, Gold and O2 London were better --- Peace.... we can't agree on everything, right?.. .

Wow and how cool. Just another wonderful philanthropic and socially conscious contribution by Prince. Already, I so appreciate his skills, talents, energies and his electic approach to life but his continual desire to be part of the solutions rather than just talk about the problems is especially refreshing. I trully value so much about Prince including his focus, as well as, his personal commitment to leave living contributions/legacies in many of the cities he performs, including the intermitted partnership with Rebuild The Dream and other community-based visions that I have both admired and experianced personal growth. He stays in his own lane but wholeheartily embraces community advocacy of the arts as one of his purposes in life. As usually...he so rocks Was it good 4 U?
Was I what U wanted me 2 B? If it's not alright...it will B Because...even when I lose...I win | |

I am happy about this. There were people griping about the sudden 100 $100 tix prince dropped in Portland "for charity" the day of the concert. Other fans who payed the $175 were complaing on the FB Roseland page. Really he did 2 sets of people a favor that night. The HS kids and the fans who could better afford $100. I am thinking it was a second chance for some fans. THe complainers were ingrates! According to my calculations that is $10,000 for just the Roseland show!
